Word of the recently released 2.0 patch to the Korean test servers has created a bit of a buzz in the North American Aion community. Among the huge list of tweaks and additions was the mention of player pets of both the vanity and utilitarian variety. While detailed information remains scarce here in the West, a few images of the pets have begun to show up on Korean MMORPG web sites, including these images over at MMOSite.
In addition to the images, there are brief descriptions of each type of pet, including one that apparently alerts its owner to the presence of an enemy player. Along with this 'alertive' pet, there are warehouse pets (which as you might expect, offer additional storage), productive pets (which may give you a rare gameplay item when you feed them), and decorative pets that serve no particular gameplay function.
The article also hints at an 'emotive study' system through which your pet can learn various abilities, including flight. Check out the images over at MMOSite.

that's...that's...I can't find the words. This is just too much. That is one of the worst ideas ever.

Bah, they will probably cost like a billion chings or whatever they call money in Aion (I forgot) and will take 10,000 hours of grinding.
Either that or NC will try out a cash shop on us. Hell we are the only market stupid enough to buy games with a monthly sub and a shop.

Prices start at a bit over 100,000 kinah. At level 30, unless you are a piss-poor player, you should be able to gather about 250,000 kinah in an hour.

Those pets don't seem to fit at all with the world they are in. Aren't you supposed to be a majestic flying immortal? Why then would you have a little bunny with wings or nintendog following you?
The pets seem to be something more out of Mabinogi.

Nothing says that majestic flying immortals can't like cute things. As long as there is nothing totally out of place like a pet monster truck or some giant robot it won't hurt my immersion any. I for one also like how they are making some of the pets customizable with abilities. All in all it appears to be another nice addition for Aion.

Pets are a great addition to any game. It doesn't matter which game I've played, there are scads of players who want to have pets, collect the pets, and show off the pets even if they offer no gameplay advantage.
I actually think that the advantages from pets should be eliminated. Leave them as cosmetic items, or as an alternate form of achievements (rare pets are earned by completing difficult tasks). Making them offer mechanical advantages just forces you to pick between optimal play or fun play, and that's never a good choice.
I always thought Aion's cosmetic designs (custom legion insignias, remodeling for armor, extremely detailed avatar design) were the highest points. Fluff like this could go a long way towards distracting players from the heinous level grind. After all, if you've got a new pet to acquire along the way, it gives you something to do while you kill monsters and run quests.
All in all, a good update. I just wonder if that dog can fly?

No news yet about the Q1 2010 financial report conference call ? They already appeared and things look grim for Aion. 68% earnings drop from Q4 of 2009. So Aion lost from Q4 2009 almost 70% of subscription, that is bad , worse than I was expecting.
