Because MMOs have the potential to be something more.

An action movie is an action movie, some are a cut above, most are average, but at the end of the day none of them will ever be anything more than a disposable two hours worth of entertainment.

Because people spend more time (and money, over time) in MMOs, they can, and should be, and have been in the past, something more.

There's a difference between having some of the same elements (and really, the fact that movies have humans in them is not a similarity), and obviously drawing from the same stale well of inspiration. But a lot of MMOs directly rip off WoW, which ripped off Games Workshop, which got its inspiration from Tolkien. And thus there are three MMOs (WoW, WAR, and LOTRO) that have remarkably similar elements, and a host of other, lesser games that have that copy them. There's not a lot of originality going on.

Not all fantasy games are like this. For example, LOTR and Harry Potter draw from many similar fantasy elements, but they both retain a distinct identity. Guild Wars has Dwarves and Dragons, but it manages to create a unique world. Dragon Age managed to rearrange the familiar to make things feel fresh. And Final Fantasy creates fantasy worlds that are a far cry from the usual generic crap you see in MMOs.

I bet many non-mmo gamers who buy console games pay more per year than any subscription game will ever cost in a year AND play for longer than most MMO players. In one year, $15 a month will only run you $180, which is 3 xbox titles. Hell, those 3 xbox titles could be Madden 11, Madden 12, and Madden 13, or any number of Lego games, or Generic RPG XIII. Why do we, as MMO players, demand so much more from our games developers when people who spend more time and pay more money for other games in other genres don't?

Also, you two are saying conflicting things. One of you are saying that you want a game that has its predecessors' features, but the other is saying that it is bad for games to rip off other games (WoW ripped off Games Workshop who ripped off Tolkein and that is bad, but LoTR ripped off Tolkein and that is good?).

Games borrow ideas from other games. Books borrow ideas from other books. Movies borrow ideas from other movies. They don't "clone" the things they borrow from, they enhance (for better or for worse).

Being the broken record that I am I will say it again:
Re-Skin anarchy online or asherons call and I would leave the rest of these current craptastic offerings to the masses. Between those two games I have everything I want from an mmo, but the graphics.....I just cant enjoy a game where I look like a lego character.
Or make a good shadowrun mmo.

:)

Haha I just read this, a remarkably similar theme on LOTRO.

I guess Massively writers should make references to sources or inspiration...

I like to stay with an MMO for as long as possible, i.e. years. However since leaving my last one, despite trying every major game that is released just cant get into any of them. Eagerly awaiting some new releases!

Mark, fact of the matter is unless your late on picking up any up and coming MMO your paying that same price or real close to it and then also paying a sub. Case in point, Global Agenda 40 bux + 10 bux a month sub. World of Warcraft 35.99(on sale when I purchased) + a sub. Also I dispute your point about playing as much... The longest documented time I've spent in any console game was FFX at a whopping 115 hours... Tekken 3 may have surpassed that but I couldnt begin to guess at an overall time spent there. Now compare that to EQ my longest running MMO @ 145 days in game or 3480 hours(one toon only, the necro had the longest /played).

Granted this is solely my opinion but I expect more from my MMO's because they tell me they can deliver it. Marketing be as it may, don't promise what you can't deliver then cry about getting flamed, hated on, or otherwise. To each his own, you can likely get a lot more mileage out of Madden or maybe Gears of War. I myself prefer MMO's / RPG's your hard pressed to find a shooter that is going to pull me away from my MMO of choice for any amount of time. Though Prototype, the new Bionic Commando, and a few other console's fill the place when I need a break but I always return to the raids and drunken social shenanigan's of MMO's. =]

First off, when I was talking about players of console games, I qualified that with "non-mmo players". Of course people who play mmos can't pull themselves away to play FFXIII or any other new AAA game for long. Just look at the Halo 2 Twelve though to see the dedication to FPS and how much people can play it. Those players didn't pester Bungie for new maps, new expansion packs, etc even though they pay a monthly sub (albeit to Microsoft for a live account).

Also, a lot of people mistakenly compare retail boxes of MMOs with retail boxes of console games. Most people who play console games pay more per year than MMO players do. Even with a $50 (+ tax) retail box and 1 month free (typical new mmos) + 11 months sub, that's only $220, which is less than the cost of 4 new console games ($260 w/ tax), which is a new console game every 3 months. You aren't comparing apples to apples when you compare the cost of one retail game + 11-12 months subs to one console game. Who buys only 1 console game in a whole year and isn't an mmo-player? Very few.

Pew, not so. If you think of console games that are in series as one game with continuous expansions (madden, call of duty, halo, etc) then the sales figures are a lot more clear. The latest call of duty game made $550 million. That was 1 year after the last call of duty game. In order for an MMO to make that much in 1 year, that would require 2.5 million monthly subscribers. Since call of duty's inception 7 years ago, the company has made $3 billion. The MMO equivalent would be 1 game with 6 expansions but would take 1.9 million monthly subs to gross the same amount of money. Only 1 western MMO has EVER had that many paying subscribers, but numerous console games have made nearly as much money as call of duty and continue to do so year after year.

Remember, the point of all this is to say that players in AAA titles on console games pay more money but make WAY less demands of the developers compared to MMO players, which in my opinion, is hugely unfair to the developers.

Pew, how many years did you play that EQ character though? I put over 400 hours into Morrowwind over 3 months back in the day and I never once thought about going to Bethesda's forums and complaining about a lack of new content, bug fixes, nerf rogues, etc. Yet, I was frothing at the mouth every patch blizzard nerfed mages in WoW. It makes no sense, and it is hugely unfair to developers that we players demand so much from them.

If you think about how people buy and play console games, they expect a new experience in the same genre every 2-3 months, but they are sated by DIFFERENT COMPANIES all working at the same time. How can we possibly expect a single company to keep up with that sort of demand? The average development studio would have to grow to 3x the normal size (at least) to keep up with that sort of demand, and any given patch could be their last if the playerbase flakes out on them.

This has been picked over in one form or another and is old news, blogged by more than a few folks already, need to get something off your chest jef? Such as your lack of...comitm...committmme...cooment.....i cant even type the word.

If it isnt entertaining i simply dont play it, i never go back unless a friend wants a pithy review. A company making multiple titles will eat those titles as i will not deal with them, regardless of my desire to play the title. My time only allows 5-10(sometimes a bit more) hours a week so the title MUST be worth the money and time. Its not that i am unfaithful, there just isnt anything out there worth being faithful to currently.

In that respect the $220 is per every full one year sub where as consoles - minus FFXI online is a one time purchase(with occasional new content for a price). MMO's seem to me at least to net more money for the developer especially with the amount of piracy and MMO's pretty much dodge that by you needing a CD Key to operate and verify your acct. I'd have to assume that the number of console gamers compared to MMO players is weighted much heavier on the console side. But MMO dev's probably net more money, at least if they have a reasonable title... doesnt have to necessarily be a smash hit.

In terms of content, most MMO folks pay extra for the Xpacs and the like. Also most of the good FPS's(FPS only though) get regular updates which cost Microsoft points which must be purchased also... Pretty close probably if figure in all the BS at least for FPS, I personally would like to continue to believe I pay less by playing MMO's =] I can only talk the wife into 3-4 games a year. Sometimes I catch the freebies on massively, even though they are MMO's also. (Fallen Earth woot!)

Even if your game is considered sub par(glares @ WAR) they still hold 200k+ subs(at least I think) at $15 a month that's considerable income compared to similar console games which likely made less.

About 6 years total in EQ, ouch about $1080 in subs for that one. But at least I didn't have 2 accounts. =] But that also included probably 6 or so expansions. I left after Lost Dungeons of Norath.
