latest word is 1.3 is going to be rolled out in 4 "phases", with no specific time line on how long each phase will be.

Indeed but phase 1 will be on the test server at the end of this week. So that is at least a starting point.

Tried the free trial and was bored. I understand that the only way the game is good is if you buy it and then pay for extra content. A free trial that actually let you experience the "real" game might be cleverer than the current one. Give people access to almost everything for a limited time, rather endless access to bugger all. I haven't seen anything so far to warrant a full purchase.

Once you buy the game, you get everything. There is no paying for additional content yet. A purchase of the game gets you access to all of the PvP, Arenas, PvE, crafting, and AvA.

Once the subscription is instated, AvA and the new PvP and PvE stuff will be behind the sub curtain. However, even if you don't sub, the other parts of the game will remain playable, so you can sub when you choose to but not lose access to the game.

Here is the post by Hi-Rez containing a chart to show the difference in content from Trial vs Once time purchase to Subscribing. (They are adding crafting to the trial at some point during 1.3 and may tweak it further.)

"Even though Chromehounds sports a very impressive level of persistence (victories matter, the map changes according to player input, players can influence the research and development of their nation to add new items into the shop, and dead nations stay dead) it does not qualify as an MMO for one simple reason -- not enough players."

You're right though. It's not an MMO. It's actually fun.

Sera, you can't quote yourself to win an argument.

It actually doesn't matter who writes what, GA is a game not a world. I'm not sure if Hi Rez wanted to make an MMOFPS but just got lost along the way and forgot to inform their marketing guys or they were actively trying to flim-flam fans of the genera, but that doesn't change what the game is.

I was tricked by Massively's coverage and MMO label - you can say whatever you want about that fact, but in a world where video games are non-refundable it's important to be able to gather information that you trust before making a purchase. Massively has been out of that 'circle of trust' for me since that incident and the facebook game 'we couldn't care less what our readers think' post. I still read, but have found the comments section to have more honest opinions - true, there is a lot of schlock in the comments but when was the last time Massively published anything critical of *any* game? That is questionable in itself if Massively considers itself 'news' and not straight up marketing.

Massively started out feeding on the 'long tail' - writing about the smaller niche market of video games that are MMOs - massive persistent worlds. It's a free world and Massively can continue to expand its subject pool, but please stop trying to redefine the genera while you do - it's not yours to redefine and pisses off fans (of the genera) in the process.

The genera is not 'evolving' or any other marketing term people are trying to use to force games in sideways - graphics are getting better and systems are changing, but the genera itself is not 'evolving' to include non-persistent worlds. If a online spreadsheet can be counted as a persistent world then my dart league is an MMO too, so you better rush on off to the bar to start covering that as well.

All in all, I enjoy Massively and have been trying to stay out of the comments for GA and STO because the subjects irritate me - I just couldn't resist seeing Sera quote herself as proof that GA is an MMO. Massively did re-introduce me to Conan though and for that I'm appreciative so keep up the 99.5% awesome work. Oh yeah, Deadalon - it's you and your crappy computer.

As it stands now it's not very MMO-ish... However once the PvE zones are in place and you can actually go out questing it will be much closer.... All in all right now to me it's much akin to TF2. Fun either way, love my 3 toons 28 Medic, 21 Recon, 20 Robo. Good to pop in shoot some fools in the face, or heal others as they shoot other fools in the face. =] Good game I purchased mine out of the trial, but I also anticipated this release since E3 last year. =] We shall see if they can deliver on Sandstorm and really put this thing over.

Whatever it is, it's really fun! But, I agree with Pewpdaddy, it will be a lot more mmo-ish when Sandstorm comes out.

Wanted to try the demo on Steam.

Cannot get the game to start. Cannot find any support to get the game to start.
Just freezes on the advertising splash screen.

Would like to look at it ;-(
