Rise of the Godslayer is coming on May 11th, and if you're an Age of Conan fan the day probably seems like it can't come fast enough. While the developer letter for the end of April doesn't help hurry the date forward any, but it does highlight one of the smaller but interesting portions of the development process -- the sort of thing that can get lost between the more major systems. And interestingly enough, it was an element that director Craig Morrison originally looked at and declined to leave in the expansion!
Originally, the design team had included a feature where you could either hand over money and be automatically transported to and from Khitai, or you could volunteer your services as a caravan guard and make the journey for free. The trade was that as a guard, you would be expected to defend the caravan against assaults, resulting in a small instanced encounter. Morrison felt that the encounters weren't really adding anything that wouldn't be better served as a part of Khitai proper. The full story of the process and the change in philosophy can be found in the director's letter, certainly a nice tease for Age of Conan players.

You know, I'm slowly being suckered into giving AoC another go even though I'm not totally convinced. It's not that the hype is getting to me (and let's face it, anyone that bought AoC at launch based on hype got burned and probably won't make the same mistake again), but the promise of the game being much better now than at launch + having some optimism that the devs won't repeat their mistakes again is pushing me over the fence to give it another go.

It's definitely something worth considering. I just came back to AoC after a year break, and its definitely improved where it used to fail. I deal with memory leaks and random crashing just like we all did in the early days, but they're infrequent enough so I can just reload the game and move on.
When was the last time you played AoC?

The last I played was in 2008, a month after launch. I'd reached level 50 and there was a sudden dearth of content and I despise grinding with a passion so I couldn't bring myself to continue. Add to that the reports from the then-80s and their experience in raids and the broken encounters and that was the final straw.

Knob, if that is the case i think you should give the expansion a chance. I am one of those that went back recently and i'll certainly try the expanasion now.

I think there are 9 random encounters you will have on your trip total. So this feature will be fun for at least 9 times. I can see it just being a chore to save money at some point but i really like the idea overall. I mean who things fighting a Cracken on the way to some exotic land isn't exciting!?

All I can say is - dont fall for the hype again.. this expansion is probably a two year process so plenty of time to play it IF they manage to fix it up to acceptable standard. Dont forget that this is just new areas - its not like you are missing out of 10 levels and will not be able to catch up.

Deadalon seriously do you have nothing else to do but jump all over ANY AoC thread on the web? You do exactly the same on MMORPG and I suspect eleswhere too.
Still sad for you.

Dude, if you hate the game so much why are you worried about the NDA? What.. are they going to boot you from Beta? lol!
SO tell us what is so wrong with the x-pac. I'd like to know. What are the game breaking bugs that will destroy the experience for us?

@Dead,
My hate for Funcom is deep BUT I have recently resub'd and the game is tons better and polished. I played from late beta, headstart and the first 3 months and cursed Funcom with male pattern baldness and erectile dysfunction for the shitty game they released! That said.... AoC is what it should have been at release now and beyond. I actually like the game and enjoy it unlike when it first dropped. I hope Funcom ( and yes fuck Funcom) will release a very polished and fun Secret World after the beating they took over AoC.

If I owned a MMO studio, I'd want Craig Morrison to run it, and that's high praise indeed!
This guy has really managed wonders at FunCom, and while it remains to be seen how much of a success this expansion is going to be, AoC is definitely in a much better place right now than it was, and in a much better place than quite a few other games out there.

Yep- Craig "Mr. Mojo Risin" Morrison is a good leader. If he is assigned to another project you can bet that the quality will go down. I am really enjoying AoC in its current state thanks to this dude and his team. I am looking forward to a new area to lvl in and explore. That is what this expansion is.

Amazing what a good change at the helm can do. This game has come leaps and bounds for the butchery Gaute the Gofer left it in.

"These encounters range from protecting your boat from a Kraken, acquiring supplies from a Pirate Cove, defending the caravan from raiders or investigating a strange oasis plagued by the undead. There is an interestingly diverse set of objectives for these encounters, and you never know which one you are going to be presented with. "
Protecting the boat from a Kraken? Oh My God :D
And i want to see Vilayet Sea too!

Freedom of speach allows ppl to post their opinions. Many MMO websites are now banning all ppl that dare to point out the past about AOC - and the fact that this expansion will yet again not be released from NDA before launch. The hype machine is on.
I can well take the wrath of the fanboys. I can also take the wrath of the MMO sites that try to hide ppl opinions. Companies like Funcom will have to be able to take the wrath to - cause after all - it was them that released a crappy game - that did not deliver.
THis expansion isn't delivering anything that ppl can't wait for the next 6 months. Im free to point that out here. I love MMO games. I just dont like bad MMO games that have oblvious other motives than to please the gamers. AOC is very high on the list of games that failed the orginal buyers... To be fair those ppl should not have to pay a dime for this.. Since they were never compensated for the crap that was relsesed at launch.

@Deadalon FYI Freedom of speech does NOT pertain to private websites. This website is not owned and operated by you. When tyou post you agree to the TOS. If you want to start your own website and say whatever you want you have that right. I used to work at Myspace and we'd take down porn, hate speech etc and we'd always get "I have freedom of speech and freedom of expression..." no, no you do not. Start your own site and go to town.

If you expect an MMO to be polished when its released, then expect to be...surprised.
Seriously though, since MMO's have ongoing development cycles, it's kind of common knowledge that the first few months of any title can be rocky. Deadalon, you sound a bit paranoid about MMO sites _banning_ people for mentioning AoC's earlier portions. If you don't have any examples of specific sites or news sources backing your claims, then we can just move on.
Also, your definition of "games that failed the original buyers," sounds kind of relative, as it's common knowledge a massive amount of people who buy MMO's upon release don't play past the first month. Who's to say what failure is and isn't, besides a few foolish Warhammer devs? ;]
And yes, I have memory leaks/crashes every day in AoC. Plenty of people do.

Thx Schtix.
Some ppl are fine with memory leaks and crashes. Some are not. What we want to know now is the truth. PPL are obviously having issues with memory - and it has always been a problem in AOC. After all it uses almost twice as much ram as other MMOs today. It will cause problems. And ppl should be allowed to point that out.
