Ancient mementos are tokens you can now earn by downing dungeon bosses and later use to buy some really nice armor from new NPCs.

Wow, they listened to player feedback. It sounds like a great addition, if the token bought gear is actually good. I might have to give RoM another try, but I am currently stuck in Ystra Highlands because questing there just bored me to death, and my leveling partner lost all interest. (I'm a Priest/Knight, so soloing is a big pain.)

Reading through some of these older articles I am scratching my head at some of inaccuracies and misconceptions about the game.

Mementos can be gained in all dungeons of Heart of the Ocean class and up. That is to say level 52+ dungeons. With the higher level ones providing greater quantity of mentos (to use the game verbiage) per boss kill.

There is adjustable difficulty settings for the first 2 endgame instances; Heart of the Ocean, the first 6 man endgame dungeon and Hall of Survivors, the first endgame raid.

Furthermore, the mementos systems offers 2 paths of progression; clean gear of lesser quality than actual gear from the respective instance. That is to say an player unable to acquire a true Heart of the Ocean gear piece on normal mode, can acquire the same piece of gear with reduced stats.

The more desirable option for hardcore payer of ROM is the acquisition of cross class gear mods per the mento system. Where before it was considered bad form for a particular class to use a certain mod on gear. These have now been made purchasable where they were all but off limits.

A player running Cyclops Stronghold is not gearing for Heart of the Ocean, per se. They are 3 dungeons back in progression of difficulty. As the game's dungeon progression isn't so much level based as it is gear based.

It is entirely possible, and advised on nearly all the ROM forums, for a player to being Heart of the Ocean NORMAL mode using quest rewards to gear themselves. Indeed, a level 54 in quest mods is better geared than would be required for Heart of the Ocean.

So the assumption one would have to run lower level instances is wholly false.
