Star Trek Online players and former players got a little surprise in their inbox this morning -- the promise of rewards if you were still playing, and the chance to get back in if you stopped. Quite apart from the recent update to the game's first large content patch, Cryptic is rolling out three new features to players: Veteran Rewards, a demo, and an upcoming free trial weekend.
The demo, not quite available yet but promised in the very near future, will work along the lines of the Champions Online demo: unlimited time, but gameplay itself limited to the first few missions and areas. For lapsed players or new players who prefer limited time and unlimited content, there's a free weekend coming up starting on May 7th. Again much like its sister game, there are no limitations on gameplay, just time: May 7th at 10 AM PST until May 10th 10 AM PST.
Of course, if you're an extant player none of these options are terribly engaging to you -- but the newly-added veteran rewards most likely are. Rolling in each 100 days, the rewards allow another free respec each interval, special costume pieces, and a small skill point buff on low-level characters. Take a look at the full page for all the rewards, which are the latest in a large dose of good news for Star Trek Online fans.

Well good for them. At least they haven't given up. I hope they keep working to improve.

Veteran rewards?
Remind me, how many months has the game been out?

I assume beta-only players will have to roll fresh in either demo or trial?

I don't think anyone should hold their breath for the 300 day reward.

When Cryptic Studios was in charge of development for City of Heroes/Villains, they offered veteran rewards on a month-by-month basis. Whereas, in Star Trek Online, they are short-changing their subscribers, by only handing out rewards every 100 days (3+ months).
Could it be partially because of a distinct lack of content, or available "bonuses" ?
If Star Trek Online was released 6-12 months later than it did, I feel it would've been a great game from the get-go. Sure, it has it's moments as is, and my favorite part of the entire game is it's episodic content. But they really need to have atleast double on the amount of episodes in the game, as well as a proper endgame setup.
Would it be too much to ask for an old vanilla-WoW styled 40-man raid of Federation starships, facing off a single Borg Cube (Wolf 359-style) :P

except that a 40-ship raid would just be a zergtest, with zero skills, formations, dancing, potions, timings, power rotations, etc
Yes, STO raids not exactly geared toward real 'fights'... more like throwing yourself against an enemies shield until it breaks, or at least cracks enough to torp it... weeeee

Why lie when you can attempt to troll using facts.

@ dudemanjac: It's not a lie if I was simply mistaken. It's been about a year or two since I last played City of Heroes, forgive me for being so very much in error.
The fact remains thou, that the so-called veteran rewards for STO are somewhat lackluster at best.

There's nothing wrong with those rewards. One of them is the much whined about character slot. I think they should continue to give those out as the count goes on. And as for how lame they are, well I will use your comparison. those early rewards for CoX were useless for the most part besides the respec. If i put the two games side by side, STO wins out in quality there.

Just a note. According to the site, the 'Free Trial Weekend' is ONLY for those with past STO accounts. It is NOT for folks to try before you buy. That may or may not be true, but it is what the site says :
"Have you taken a break from Star Trek Online, but are interested to see what you may have missed? To celebrate the release of Season One, Update One, we're inviting former Star Trek Online players to spend a weekend with us, free of charge."
