Last we checked, PlanetSide was up and running. The game's not still in beta, no announcements of anything imminent on the way, right? Well, maybe not.
Sony Online Entertainment added something to the PlanetSide site this evening with no fanfare or announcements of any sort: a countdown clock and a comic. The countdown clock currently sits at 18 days, 6 hours, and a whole bunch of minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. The comic is set "in a secret laboratory high above the mountains of Searhus" and features the familiar Big Red Button in the last panel.
So what happens when that big red button gets pushed? Well, let's get the obvious guess out of the way first. The game is approaching its seventh birthday, so it's the right time of year for a big announcement of some sort or another. We'll keep our eyes peeled for more information, and in the meantime feel free to join in the forum discussion thread about what this could all mean.

You know what would be funny? If the big announcement was the shutting down of planetside.
I'm not saying I want that. I just think it would be hilarious.

Countdown to extinction... and can't say I'll miss it horribly, should that be the case.
A sequel - a well made such - would be pleasant surprise though. Hopefully one that would address hacking/botting issues that the current game is suffering from.
Perhaps even a console/pc cross-platformer? Yes please.

Of course, Raijinn's comment can be interpreted as "The servers are being taken offline but this isn't related to that" ;)!
I imagine they're either building up to some 7th birthday shindig or more likely an announcement about the sequel. If they are working on a sequel followers of the Agency may advise Planetsiders not to get too excited too soon.

I've been lied to. Abandoned for months because the developers were all off doing some Everquest junk. Had my favourite game all but obliterated because some twit thought BFR's were a good idea. And worst of all, I paid money for Core Combat.
Yet despite all the dissapointment and frustration, this jaded retired veteran of the Auraxian wars can't help but feel a tiny flame of excitement at this announcement.

I'm all for it. Another PlanetSide would be something to look forward to, no doubt about it.

PS1 going F2P would be brilliant marketing for PS2 because it would get people pumped for it.

I played Planetside on release till a few months after the release of core combat. Over the years the free play promotions always brought me back and tempted me to resub, but the lack of a solid dev team always tipped me over into the pass column. Planetside is a fun game and still has provides an unmatched MMO experience. Before Sony decimated the dev team and pulled away CS support, hacking was fairly rare and dealt with very quickly. Exploits and loop holes rarely stayed open and players who abused them got banned. Honestly if left alone I think Planetside would still have 4 active servers and a dedicated fan base.
