I think they're going to have a pretty tough time selling this to players. They need to convince people that this game is an improvement over the garbage released last year, and the fact that they've turned it around in only a few months is not promising.

Other "not promising" features are that it may be subscription fee, but they still want you to buy the game up front before you can see if the game has changed enough to be worthwhile. Furthermore, they're using a microtransaction model that sounds like it has signficant in-game impact, as shown in this bullet point from the press release:

"•Buy items, beef up your character etc using the Tribute micro-transaction system."

That doesn't sound very promising to me.

Fortunately there is still a 7 day free trial available, so no, nobody has to but the game up front to see the changes.

And the opening of the game *has* changed quite a lot and is a lot smoother and newbie friendly. Still not my kind of game, but frankly the fact that I wasn't repulsed into unsubscribing after 5 minutes (the way I was in beta, and again after the soft launch) puts it more in the average pool of MMOs for me.

The game has improved quite abit from the last patch. You can not compare the two games. So the Devs have done a lot of work to work out some of the major bugs. Does some exist that were in closed beta?, yes. But if I recall WOW still has bugs from launch.

In terms of if the game is worth $20.00 dollars. I would say it is worth the money for gameplay value. Twenty dollars is not a lot of money for a game. And most of the fluff you can get by just playing the game.

Now comes the whole problem. That is Derek Smart. He has excelled in showing the Alganon community that he has no respect for their views and has no problem telling a customer to f-off. Hmm, customer. That is right he thinks this is one of his piss poor games that he has made. He forgets that those customers that he tells to f-off are customers of the Investors. Not one of the sad folks that bought his crap.

I bet he has turned so many people from the game because he has displayed so little respect for the players and future customers. That if the investors knew the way he treated those customers they would kick his sorry butt off the team. Heck your normal fast food worker shows more respect for the customer then Derek Smart shows for the customers of the Investors.

Number of players that were online at release and today were less then 100. As I type there is 73 players from all the servers combined.

You sure have done a great job Derek getting past and future players to want to invest in the game. Great Job!. That was what you were hired to do?.

No that is right you were out of the "limelight" that you needed to try to get back in it. After all the sad excuse that you can call your games has little or no community. Feel better now?

Alganon is easly worth $20.00 for gameplay value. But then gamers tend to not forget that we are still customers and expect to be treated with respect.

I tried the beta of this game and was totally put off. In fact, it was the shortest beta I had ever played (maybe 8 minutes or so). It was totally derivative, nothing worked in the game, and the idea that they were going to charge the same as a full AAA MMO was ludicrous. However, after all the drama with Derek Smart and David Allen started I decided to check out a trial to see what the game was like now, and I actually had fun! Is it a shameless WoW rip-off? Yes it is, but it's a fun one, and for the price I thought it worth it to pick up once the relaunch happened. That's right. After uninstalling the beta after about 8 minutes, I actually bought the game. It is a completely different game than it was at the December launch, and for the price the fact that it's still a WoW rip-off doesn't bother me.

I say check out the trial. You might be surprised. I was.

Derek Smart has been proactive on some of the forums like at MMORPG answering player concerns, and working on issues that people have brought to his attention on there. I might give the trial a go to see how I like it, since Derek seems dedicated to making this a fun MMORPG, and he actually seems to listen to player feedback, unlike many other "celeb" CEO's.

I can't even get the damn game to work when I can get any f2p game to work. Just sad. On the forums others with the same problems.

I am sorry, this game is still a pile of junk. Period. Every player with an internet connection can gush over the improvements but let us be quite frank about the improvements.

1) The UI is uglier than it was before. Sure you can reposition the elements but why bother? The scaling feature applies to all elements so you can not make any piece larger individually. Blocky and brown... and some shuffling of the UI pieces.

2) The new introduction to the game actually adds zero to the gaming experience. You can not tell me that the games racial intros (stolen directly from WoW) make them game better to play. They don't. Nor does the fact that the starting area is simply just worthless. When I say worthless, I mean it was thrown in simply to throw it in. The new "character creation" wizard actually makes it take longer than it previously did to create a new character. Because when you click on an option it is an entire new block of text -- essentially a new screen.

So, as an example of how much all of these "new" features add. You hit create character, you go to a screen to choose your race (by icon only, no graphics to see the difference). Then after reading that description you go to pick a family. Again, you get to pick a family the same way. So, you finish that, then choose your class and appearance. The models are still hideous.

Then when that is done, you get the cut scene where you shake your head and ask why they bothered.

Now you are in game. In the "new" starting area. Pick up a quest, speak to another guy. He tells you to speak to 3 other people, they tell you to speak to the guy who told you to speak to them. Then he tells you to speak to another guy, and he tells you to take the portal. That is the extent of the new area -- four go talk to him quests.

Then guess what happens after you port? You are back at the same original starting area from beta. Nothing changed.

3) Several bugs still exist -- including float jump.

4) As you walk, your camera does this small jumpy motion. Your character also lags a bit still, it causes this weird stutter motion in movement. It made me feel sea sick.

5) Mobs still warp. While doing the Zombie Flesh Quest, several zombies warped to me.

6) Casting animations and attack animations are slow looking and laggy.

7) Combat is exactly the same. Talents are the same and they still have talents that actually effect spells in the first tier that you won't get until you are into the game a bit.

8) The RMT shop actually sells gear. Not buffs or enchantments. It sells gear! It also sells, XP potions, Study time, enchantments, mounts and repairs. Essentially you can purchase everything you need to just not play the game. (Yes, you don't have to buy them, but remember, in a level oriented game like this, people always want to be the best. Selling epic gear/enchants and so on will force other people to buy them.)

9) Derek Smart has gone on a rampage today of insulting forum members from mmorpg.com (he told a non-native speaker to "go back to school.") and on alganon forums telling people to basically go away.

10) The game simply isn't fun. Endless quest/mob grinding has been played out. The combat is boring and slow.

I am sorry, the relaunch simply is a joke. I tried it, saw the same gameplay/bugs that the game had before and realized that the game was simply trying to lure people with "new features" while the features actually have zero effect on the actual game.

Not worth playing if you are tired of WoW, play WoW, play RoM, or play any other free to play game. DDO is far better, Guild Wars is better, RoM is better... why bother.

Awesome review. This site has been a bit too accepting of the spin provided by Derek 'Send in the Lawyers!' Smart. Are they worried they'll get sued if they go beyond rewriting his press releases?

Been playing a bit, it's definitely a lot better than it was. Don't think it will make it though to be honest.

Honestly the only thing that turns me on to games is a happy community. Sure I'll check out the graphics and look for pet and shiny armor but the first thing I usually do is head to the forums and check out how happy the players are, what bugs they're crying about and, most importantly, how the mods interact with them.

Alganon forums are repulsive.

I did play the game when it was first in beta and it WAS a WoW rip off, it looks exactly the same, no joking. It had potential and I did like the crafting system but I laughed for the hour that I played. So I saw this new guy, Derek Smart, was molding Alganon into a new and exciting game. I didn't reinstall it but I ventured into the forums.

Absolutely NO CRITICISM is allowed when Derek Smart is looking. The mods are quite dedicated but I've seen a post where he deleted the original post (Which was not offensive but was constructive critique) and he wrote over it "DON'T BRING THIS HATEFUL BS INTO THE FORUMS, UNACCEPTABLE, YOU WILL BE BANNED!!!11!" And I know the original post was constructive because someone had replied to it and the text was quoted.

I wouldn't pay $20 a month to help keep this man fed and clothed.

So essentially they wacked in 4 go to and talk 'quests' and moved a few UI things around...but its still the same old WoW/Eve ripoff then?

73 logins on launch day ROFLMAO!

I guess there's a few bucks back for your 'Investors' Derek lol ;)

Will we be getting an actual review of the 'new and improved' Alganon or another 'paid for advertorial' like last time?

Essentially correct, but more so of a WoW ripoff than before since they also added in instances and racial cut scenes. In essence, while claiming to understand why the game was a WoW rip off, the only thing they could come up with was "it must be the UI." Then they went back to WoW and said, you know, the racial cut scene intros with voice overs are awesome and those instances are snazzy!

I am mightily confused myself as to how this game is any less of a WoW clone now. Heck, it even took a major problem with WoW (being able to earn gear easy) and solved that altogether by just selling it. ($5.50 for a level 20 set, $9 for level 30, $11 for level 40.) The game even sells epics:

Random Loot Box: 40-50 Epic
A random epic item between levels 40 and 50.

The low price of $5 per random epic. (So, spend $50 and you might get a useful piece for yourself!)

Just looking at the screenshot here, does anyone else think they've just replaced the WoW interface with one from DDO?

I won't be looking at this game. I would have done so given the hard work that has gone into it in recent months and because I'd have had nothing to lose really, but Derek Smart's complete lack of personal integrity and professionalism as illustrated by his constant rants here and elsewhere mean I simply won't touch the game. I simply don't deal with that kind of guy, it's as simple as that. I hope the game's investors wake up to his methods, but I fear it is already too late and their investment will be lost.

Well after a night of playing the trial I uninstalled. Even with the improvements this game is just plain bad, let alone how much of a turn-off it is to see Derek Smart and the way he posts all over the forums. He even insults or talks over the mods and other dev team members who treat the community with respect. Oh well, gave it a shot, moving on.

This is a direct quote from BVRBandit (Derek Smart on Alganon forums). I think it pretty much sums up his stance on players. Good luck keeping anyone around with this attitude....

These forums are not for negative postulation. Any and all such posts will be deleted.

If you don't like the game, leave.

If you don't think the game will survive, leave.

If you don't think we're going to make it, leave.

If you don't think we're developing the game exactly how you want it, leave.

Seriously we only want positive vibes because positivity begets positivity. We are at a critical time right now and simply don't have the time or patience to deal with foolishness.

If you want to help us, do so. If you don't, yes, you got it, LEAVE.

There are LOTS of helpful and informative people on the forums, if you can't beat them, go ahead, join them.
