Funcom has announced their new Age of Conan offline leveling mechanic, introduced in the 1.07.2 patch that hit the live servers today. Senior Community Manager Oliver 'Tarib' Kunz details the system in a post on the game's official forums.
The new feature kicks off by giving each active account four levels which can distributed to any characters above level 30. Every four days, an additional level will be added to your offline leveling pool, again enabling you to bump up one of your post-30 avatars. The levels accrue regardless of whether you actually log into Age of Conan every four days provided you maintain an active subscription.
if you've got a gaggle of level 80 characters sitting on your select screen, the additional levels will be waiting for any new character that you create and advance to 30 or higher. Finally, Tarib notes that levels are permanent once assigned, so choose wisely. "Customer Support would not be able to take that level away from your character and add it back to your pool. So please be careful when assigning these levels," he says.
Check out the official announcement and stay with Massively for more details as well as Rise of the Godslayer info.

Just getting back into the game, not sure I'm a fan of this. I want to play for the content, not the race to the end.
I know people will say, "Well don't use them you total douchebag, stop telling me how to play!!!!!1"
How the impact on trying to get people to enjoy that content with you, forming groups and relationships in game is put under some strain if you are try to enjoy all the content.
And I can see a problem of people just jumping all content for the last few levels, as the later levels are harder to earn. You give a system to players, they'll use it in the most efficient way, so not sure this is a stellar idea.
Good to see Funcom working out new ideas, but back to the drawing board on this one.

I find this feature a bit of puzzler as well. I play AoC to enjoy the content, so leveling without actually playing the game defeats the purpose for me. I doubt I'll use the option.
I suppose it does foil the gold-seller operations to a degree: why pay real money to have some gs outfit level a maxed-character for you when you can do it yourself for free?
And if you simply can't stand to take "alt-character number 7" through quest-chain X yet again, I suppose this is a way to skip repeating content.
But, as has been said, those gamers who like to have absolutely everything handed to them in MMORPGs tend to get bored with a game even more quickly when their desires are met, and move on. This won't retain their loyalty; it may even cycle them out sooner.
In any event, the free levels are optional. More options are always welcome.

This is the sort of thing that makes Eve suck to me, time leveling. I guess its good that it isn't forced, but it makes content pointless to an extent.

Sounds like a scheme to attract more lazy players, you know the ones that don't stick around once you've handed everything to them because they're bored.

Yeah, before you know it some other game will do something similar. Maybe even let you make hero-class characters that start at level 55 or something. Can you imagine? I bet that would make their customer base dissolve...
Lets look at what this will actually do. If you spend the time to level a character to 30, you can have it to 80 by doing nothing for...200 days. I don't think it's going to work that way. Instead, I'm guessing this will appeal to casual players who would normally have time to gain one or two levels per weekend, and can now gain two or three. It will feel like a big different to them, feel a bit more rewarding, but I doubt it will result in players hitting the cap without learning how to play. Still, we'll have to wait and see...

I don't understand what's so lazy about not wanting to participate in effortless fetch quests for hours to arbitrarily get stronger when you gain enough points.
This is not laziness, this is wanting to get rid of the useless fetch and grind filler.

Well, if anything, if it's just a matter of paying, why not just offer a fresh lv80 character for a fee then?
I'm not entirely for or against the measure, I just find it odd we're skipping the game to gain something; shouldn't you be *playing* the *game* to gain *levels*? Aw shucks, if people just want to pay extra to skip it, this makes sense financially I guess.

I think it is a fine idea. AoC's level-grind isn't very daunting as a whole so giving a few levels here and there won't cause too much of a fuss, whereas other games like Aion might have an old-schooler backlash.
I know when I played, I would have liked to skip cart-farming or the last part of Kesh.

actually its a great way to lure in the people who like Eve for the ability to progress without online grinding. i'd love to see more mmos do something like this. i get really tired of having to frag mobs over and over to progress.

As if I needed even more of a reason to never play this game again... They had some good ideas that were executed poorly, and they continue to make poor decisions to try and pull back all the people that left.

I think this is actually very reasonable, the one level every four days would be equivalent to leveling through casual/moderate play in that same amount of time, so it gives people some reason to keep interest in their character and to keep subscribing even if they are unable to play. I, being hardcore as hell one moment and completely absorbed by real life BS the next, would like options that let me play as much or as little as I want, and this helps.
And hell, it's not like they implemented an auto-bot like Jade Dynasty/Battle of the Immortals or something.

The amount really isn't much, if anything this is really only good for super casuals or alts.
For concerns on whether this will effect grouping -- it is once per four days, no one is suddenly going to out level you because of it. They would need to accrue the points over time (a month should see you building up 7 levels worth, assuming you get to stockpile as many as you want) to have any significant leveling in an instant, and that would be time that they could spend just maxing the character the old grindy way. Having this isn't going to affect a person's will to group.
As to player retaining, this could affect that... But who says it will be in a negative way? 'Working for it' being the excuse that players will stick around longer is silly, if anything having to *work* for it will drive them off -- this is a *game*, remember? Players will stick around if they are having fun.
