"All of this, of course, doesn't excuse the fact that for most purposes they are the same races as the previous game. What surprises me is that people expected differently from a game in the franchise. Is anyone going to be surprised when we ride chocobos, talk with moogles, learn to summon things and interact with crystals in some way?"

Considering the playable races in FFXI didn't exist in any previous FF game (except for humans/humes, of course), I don't think this is a very reasonable point of reference.

If FFXIV is going to be set in the same world, or have a connection to the FFXI universe in some way, then by all means, keep the same races (but re imagined). If not (and it seems it is not) then new ones (or even just DIFFERENT ones from previous FF games) might have been nice.

Yeah I agree. Keeping the "same" races to keep FFXI players comfortable is something of a head-scratcher.

Honestly, I think they did it to save time. SE puts a ridiculous amount of research into their character/race design (i.e.- Bosch from FFXII was designed to have the facial bone structure that is a mix of asian and a particular Nordic tribe (or something) o.O). Maybe they used the same races to bypass the time hurdle for their unsually high design standards.

Well, look at every other mmorpg out there. I think re-using cliche races are pretty common or standard for MMORPGs. They all seem to for the most part have Dwarfs, Elves and Humans. I can't exactly say thats very 'original' either. Enemies seem to usually include Orcs, Goblins, Wolves and Spiders etc.

Really, there's few mmorpg that break the fantasy mold.

That's true too, never thought of that.

How else would SE re-interpret the classic fantasy races? They were already somewhat innovative in that regard.

What would they do, make elves not-androgenous? Not have an ultra-chibi cute race? Not have a female race objectified with next-to-nothing armor and a bestial sex drive? Not have a Barret race to compensate for rumored... shortcomings?

I think not.

It would have been nice to see different races however, what and how many races can you create that are original? Most final fantasy games have all "humes" bar one or two characters or hume-like models. (I'd be scared to log in to FFXIV and see 20 Quinas running around)

Given XI's other races were loli humes, cat-girl humes, elves, and muscular humes, the lack of new races is all the more disappointing, especially considering most of them were redesigned to look even -more- human-like. What's the point in having more than one race at all at that point?

Exactly. This from the company that has created some very imaginative races over it's long tenure.

At this point, I'm perfectly happy with the re-imagined races. Given that no matter what races appear in a fantasy MMO, the most common races everyone seems to end up playing are the:

"Sexy Elves"
"Sexy Humans"
and sometimes the "Sexy Furry Types" depending on the game.

At this point I like the way the FFXIV races look, better than FFXI. I love the fact they are adding more variation options to the races, and am hoping this will help with the creation of more unique looking characters. (I may be in the minority in that I really like how the Lalafell look over the Tarutaru.) If they end up adding male Miquo'te, female Roegadyn, and female Highland Hyur, all the better.

The only race I would really love to see them add as playable would be Moogles. And this is a pipe-dream since it appears they have been relegated to be the information/quest/sidekick/storage/mailman NPCs of the FF series.

Moogles as a race would be very awesome, I was told the very first moogle to appear in an FF series was an actual character, not some mail man or life like save point... I would definitely have an alt as a moogle. :D
