I just dont like the way Bioware makes games anymore. They're all shallow rpg/mechanics wise and they herd you down 1 path. The baldur's gate games were good back in the day, but then they switched over to the xbox and they really dumbed down the quality of their releases.

After playing Kotor and Mass effect, I really was astounded that Dragon Age got such high scores.

Ok so let me get this straight.

Couple of articles a week based on what little news Bioware releases = Bad

200 articles a day extolling the virtues of Cryptic and it's games based on antything slightly related and blogger opinion = good.

Gotcha. 8P

The level of hype that this game is receiving should be expected. This is Star Wars and Bioware, we're talking about. I'd expect to see the hype accelerate as the year goes on.

No use complaining about it or painting TOR negatively. This has the potential to be a very good game. It will probably be a big launch unless the game turns out to be utter crap during its open beta, so I can see 1,000,000+ initial subs easily for it. If or not it can hold that number for more than a year is another story.

Personally, I'm more hyped for FFXIV. But I am also following TOR very closely.

SWG is despised because they ripped the guts out of the game and replaced them in mid stride without consulting the players that were actually playing the game. A game the players had invested alot of time in and were not consulted about the changes that were implemented. SOE just assumed they were a bunch of addicts that would stick around no matter what. Bad assumption.

Also SWG is not really polar opposite of WoW anymore. SWG does have some sandbox aspects and a stronger roleplaying community but alot of gameplay still revolves around fragging mobs over and over.

and finally, i think SW:TOR is so highly anticipated not because its going to be so awesome, but because all of the current mmo offerings suck. think about it.

I will let Massively know when I get tired of TOR if and when I play the game after 6 plus months after it has been released. Until then, it is on par with the course for being such a high interest IP. :)

The author should be asking instead what if Bioware decided to release TOR info at an snails pace as Blizz is doing with Cat. Where you may get one or two screens shots and/or concept art with a bunch of Blue text once every 7 months and a bit. I think most potential players would be rioting on the street with pitchforks if Bioware did that.

And I personnally don't think TOR is being hype the way Warhammer was. Granted there are trappings that leave me a bit concerend. But there's no colorful sunglasses wearing spokesperson claiming this game will be "our Led Zeppelin to WoW's Beatles" ...least not yet.

Q: Do I think SW:TOR will reach 2 million subs?
A: Yes

Q: Has there been too much hype?
A: Considering its releasedate, they might have made a smart move by attracting people's attention at such an early point in time.

Q: Should we forget about SW:TOR for 9 months before picking up on the development again?
A: If you are a MMO fan, I would rather focus my time on games already on the market. If you are a Star Wars fan, I would follow this game day in and day out.

Q: Should Massively tone down its interrest in SW:TOR?
A: Probably not, judging by the huge investment in the MMO business being brought foreward, any PR telling someone spent 150 mill usd is nothing but good.

Q: Will I buy SW:TOR?
A: Yes

I think you have to be much more specific about the "SWG refugees" if you want to slam TOR for having them, because by and large most players of the original SWG applaud the game for being ahead of its time, dynamic and different. It wasn't until studio-enforced changes were made to the game that it became crap, and even then you can't necessarily blame individual developers for it... as they had no choice, once the decision was made by LucasArts and SOE. The destruction with that game had so much more to do with corporate issues than it did with development issues.

Yes they have a number of the "original" dev team from SWG. While SWG had its problems in the beginning (rushed out, incomplete content, plethora of bugs that were and still havent been addressed) they made the one game that sticks out as something different and special. Verant Interactive was a pretty good studio and had SOE kept their mitts outta the project and kept John Turdley where he belonged there is every reason to think that SWG would still be a powerhouse today. It isn't the Verant crew that is universally despised. It's SOE, Smedley, and a small number of other devs that screwed with the amazing formula that was SWG, one of whom is no longer with us may he rest in peace.

Now, of course, blind optimism will lead to many people being disappointed. This is inevitable. Thinking that TOR will be anything like SWG will also lead to massive disappointment.

I, however, have a large amount of faith in BioWare. They have yet to develop a game that I disliked, and say what you will about their take on the heroes journey that makes up DA:O, ME, etc etc, it works; makes me want to keep playing; and is leap years ahead of anyone else insofar as story is concerned. WOW, EQ, EQ2, and all their subsequent clones have always left me wanting more. LoTRO with a strong IP is stagnant because of the IP. BioWare has the same freedom within the Star Wars Universe that the original Middle Earth Online would've had with advancing the story into the Fourth Age. I look forward to actually caring about my avatars in a virtual world the way I did my original AD&D characters, the Avatar of Ultima, and other single player RPGS. Here's to hoping that we actually get an MMORPG not another grinder.

Tired of hearing about TOR? That would assume that as a read I would consume any material produced about it. I pretty much ignore most TOR news, so I do not get tired of it.

When talking about how much the game needs to break even, I would assume they mean either initial box sales or possibly box sales + some subscription time some midly interested player might stick around. All the hype is of course there to make sure the initial box sales are as high as possible.

How much they then need to break even for just running it and some amount of new development is the next question.

Your attempts at forcing Bioware to release another update through the reverse psychology in your article are as clumsy as they are stupid Jef. ;-)

Go back two hyperspaces.

Too much exposure to anything pre or post release will drive you bonkers after a while. One can always unplug. For example, I used to come here for news all the time until this site started foaming uncontrollably at the mouth about Fallen Earth every single day.

Too much hype and speculation could hurt TOR at launch, but as far as initial numbers go I doubt it will hurt in any meaningful way. Wether people end up staying with it or not, many are going to at least give it a spin.

I am weary of established companies and MMO's taking a back seat to the endless spew of free to play garbage Massively seems to cater to lately.

AAA titles should be getting the lions share of coverage, not the other way around. and what's with all the TOR hate anyway?

I am tired of Editors like you, which lack of any attempt of journalistic professionalism, /flex-ing around with a total absence of any valueable
information just to get some attention for your private issues, no one cares about.

This article is not about TOR, it´s about how you r suffering from the so called Hype. Well Dude, get some serious counseling, but stop abusing
the massively platform as your psychological recycling-trashcan.

i´m not weary about TOR, i´m weary about dorito stuffed whineguys who call themself editors and trying to trashtalk something they don´t even
have the slightest clue about. I´m really wondering why you don´t get " fired" for such a poor example of digital toiletpaper.

PLEASE STFU !

I have to pipe in because I skimmed comments and didn't see anyone else say anything about this (apologies if someone did).

The Clone Wars "movie" was just the first few episodes of the CHILDREN'S SERIES that now airs on Cartoon Network. It wasn't really made for adults. That said, I went and saw it with my boyfriend because I like Star Wars, and it was cute, but not great. The show is now MUCH better than that first "movie" and my boyfriend catches it whenever he can. Every week I think I don't want to watch it, but every week end up watching the whole thing. It's a cute show, FOR KIDS, made by people who clearly really like Star Wars themselves.

I don't buy everything that has Star Wars on it (for instance, Super Bombad Racing or whatever it was called). I know the prequels sucked compared to the original trilogy. I still really like Star Wars, and I'll still play Old Republic.

Now, will it be good enough for me to stop playing WoW? I don't know. I'm excited to see more of Old Republic, but I'm not going to blindly subscribe forever if it's not a good game. Just because an adult likes Star Wars, that doesn't make them

1) a mouth-breathing manchild (or womanchild, in my case)
2) a sucker who will buy anything Star Wars
3) someone who doesn't realize how corny and stupid Star Wars can be.

What it does make me is a nostalgic fan who really enjoyed growing up with the series, who appreciates the good with the bad. Stereotyping nerds and geeks (who are nerdy and geeky about something you don't like), on a blog about MMOs is highly ironic.

And since when is it a bad thing to keep a childlike sense of wonder even as an adult? Some cultures revere the young-at-heart.

I am a little hyped.

But, I sure hope we are not disappointed. I am getting VERY sick of this one horse MMO town where it seems that WoW is the only real player out there.

I for one, hope that someone (anyone) comes out with another blockbuster of an MMO franchise. If it happens to be Star Wars, then so be it; that's be great in my book! Maybe this will fill that void that we feel when we imagine a "World of Starcraft"....
