That is EXACTLY what he is trying to say, IP alone cannot carry games anymore in this industry.

Although I am not fed up with SWTOR news, I can see the points he is trying to make and they are all valid.

The only reason Star Wars Galaxies is despised now is because of how it was changed and altered from it's original form. If the people involved in SWTOR were involved in the original SWG and NOT the changes that were made to it, I still have high hopes for SWTOR.

Name one game that BioWare released that failed? None.

It's like saying Michael Jordan will miss a game-winning free throw... LOL!

A bit tired of the exposure yeah. At this point I just want to it released and see for myself whether or not it'll match up to the original KOTOR series.

I LIVE, as in I-put-up-curtains, on the SW:TOR forums. I am hyped up like a squirrel drinking coffee and taking BP's AM/PM boosta shots for this game.

I even have an ongoing SW:TOR fanfiction series, a SW:TOR-RP wiki article series, fan art, AND EVEN AN ORIGINALLY COMPOSED John-Williams-esque SONG for my character and his guild.

I. Am. Hyped.

So I don't mind Bioware releasing its weekly little updates, or of us fans on the forums being all excited.

I don't even mind Massively reporting every minor update as it keeps all the MMORPG info in one place. Good looking out for us guys. Your well-written insights and prompt reporting make you guys invaluable to folks like me. :)

What's KILLING ME, however, is when a site, ESPECIALLY MASSIVELY, keeps posting NON-NEWS articles.

Since I actually love Massively, I'll pick on you guys a bit: Just in the last month (35 days) or so, Massively has posted:

The Daily Grind: Still Hyped for Star Wars: The Old Republic? (April 17)
Anti-Aliased: Even virtual relationships are hot button issues (April 2)
The Daily Grind: How Well do you think Star Wars: The Old Republic will do? (March 20)
Anti-Aliased: Is SW:TOR worth 2 million users? (Mar 19)

--and that's not in including all the side articles with snippets of considering how something could impact TOR (when we have no actual game, just opinions on what MIGHT be there...)

Not ACTUAL news, just: What do YOU think about TOR? What do you think about the hype? What class/side will you play? How will you live your little virtual lifestyle?...and now:

The Daily Grind: Tired of TOR? (April 24) -- Gee, where did all this hype come from--are you as sick of it as we are?

O_O Roflmao! :) Srsly?

YES MASSIVELY, YES I AM SICK OF IT!

I'm hyped for the game too guys--I'm even working on more fanfiction to post this coming week--but SHEESH, come on guys, tone it down, or take it to the SW:TOR forums with us!

@matix

I know exactly where you're coming from. While I'm no where near as involved in the hype as you are, I'm still very excited for this game. My excitement waxes and wanes with each tidbit of news or release of the.. godawful comic they have running parallel with the updates. But when it comes to Massively, this is the site I look to for my MMO news and to be perfectly frank, I don't care AT ALL about the opinions of the columnists on this site when it comes to articles like this.

And I could bitch and moan about it, but knowing now that Massively is essentially a blog with several writers in an MMO theme, I find that it's my original understanding of the site that's wrong. Like I said, I came here to read about news for my favorite games and hear updates, and so forth. I've never been a fan of opinion columns on games simply because.. I don't care! I love speculation, I love humor, but I really.. REALLY don't care whether the readers/columnists think there's enough/not enough hype. And I don't care whether people think it's going to be WORTH 2 million players, nor do I care at all about virtual relationships! But there are, evidently, people who do.

And I'd still be in the wrong, expecting something from the website that's different from what it is. Which is why I barely read Massively anymore, and at best I personally skim the titles/overviews of articles to get past all the opinion posts and find actual news to read.

If you don't want to read an article, don't! Depend on Bioware for your SWTOR updates, their views may be biased but at least you'll be getting information from the horse's mouth. :)

I am absolutely SICK of hearing about this damn game! You would think its the second coming or something. The worst part is the fan generated hype. Their anticipation of things from the game Bioware has not even mentioned.

When TOR is finally released the fallout from what it is not in opposition to what fans have made it out to be is going to be Insane. The funniest part is that for a lot of people TOR will probably make STO seem not all that bad because of the outright delusional expectations there are of TOR.

Someone PLEASE make TOR hype go away so it has a better chance at success.

People are excited for SWTOR, so much so that they will have general conversations about it without any new information being released. There is little information for SWTOR is currently available, and the finite bits of new info that come every Friday hardly warrant being called overhyped. The only people hyping SWTOR are the game sites and blogs. Thats not an insult to you, but its not exactly like Bioware is inundating us with content.

People who don't care about SWTOR will likely continue not to care, and the millions of us who do care about SWTOR will likely continue to do so.

I am not a fan of Star Wars, I didn't even like it when I was young and it puzzles me 'mature' people regard Star Wars as if it is something to take seriously. But obviously there are such people.

That said, I expect massively to remain relatively objective and the negative tone of the SW:TOR articles are, in my opinion, not welcome.

Trying to fight a hype is joining the hype and so I would advice you to do your work as game journalists and ignore the hype.

I too didn't like Star Wars that much. Out of 6 movies only 2 were actually good (Empire and the original) and I never got into any of the other hoopla surrounding Star Wars (ie: toys, other books, video games or any other media that was Star Wars). But what gets me hyped about this game is that I finally picked up Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for $10 on steam. Wow. This game is really immersive. In fact, I think KOTOR is not only the best single player RPG I've ever played, but I think its IP is greater than the original cannon. If you haven't tried KOTOR, you really should. Best $10 bucks on video games I've ever spent.

Hype doesn't make games fail. Overhyping and not delivering does. I think if anyone can back an 800 lbs hype wookie, it's BioWare.

Hype is a good thing. Word of mouth advertising, the end result of hype, is the best way to attract actual interest in your game among a tightly knit community like MMO gamers. Look at APB. Every once in a while you see an article here on Massively about it. It gets maybe 10 comments, mostly about how it's NOT an MMO (without saying too much, if DDO can be considered an MMO, then so can APB) but you talk to people playing these games, or FPS games where they should be targeting, and they're all like, "What's APB?"

Also, what is BioWare doing to hype the game? Minicomics and videos? How is this hype machine not primarily powered by the fans? And if that's the case, can you lay the blame on people like Angel who make wild suppositions about what TOR will and won't be?

"
However, you and I both know that calling Dofus a 'mainstream' game is a bit of a stretch. It's so mainstream that it gets mentioned once or twice annually on this and other gaming sites, right?"

http://www.massively.com/search/?q=dofus&invocationType=wl-massively

That is more then one or twice annually and that is just this sites mentions.

Depends whether we're talking 1m sustained/continuous subscriptions or launch-day purchases. Several MMOs can claim to have sold 1m copies at launch, and 3-6 months later they barely have 100k subscribers left.

It seems like the author is a WoW fan boy since they seem to praise wow in an article about TOR. Perhaps next time leave wow out of it? Has bioware even said they want to be a WoW competitor? And how exactly are they going to be a "wannabe" wow when its two different fantasy settings and two different styles of games.
