Ditto on the great shield. I don't know who does the pictures here on Massively, but quite often they are very funny. Well done unknown Massively picture person!!!

Similar things were said by Mark Jacobs when EA bought Mythic....and look how that went. As a lifetime LOTRO subscriber since May '07 I hope I'm wrong, but they smells may too much like the whole EA/Mythic thing.

I didn't think about that Jess. I forgot about the Mythic EA thing. Hmm

"Foreseeable future" would include what is currently in the production pipeline which as we all know runs about a year ahead of release. Our concern is what will go on beyond the current plans.

Only time will tell.

As a past Hardcore DDO'er I concur with you guys I really hope the "Looney Tunes" at WB don't break Turbine... One of my favorite developer's of late. I cancelled my sub to DDO prior to the announcement but it had nothing to do with any of this business the Shroud grind just really started getting to me.... Good luck to the folks at Turbine and for the love of Pete please keep up the good work and don't let the "new management" break a good system you seem to have going.

WB actually seems intent on creating a solid, creative team of game makers. They bought Rocksteady after Batman: Arkham Asylum. They tapped the folks behind the original Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance to make a new LOTRO game. Now they've bought Turbine. Megacorps have bad histories with gaming (just look at Activision's recent actions), but I don't see the WB buying two solid developers just to strangle their creativity (although I could see WB buying Turbine just to consolidate the rights to the LOTR franchise).

All I want them to do is leave Turbine to do their own thing. They have been a great developer and I hope to god they stay that way. I would hate it if anything happened to LoTRO.

What's going to change? Will our games take a new and possibly unpleasant direction? The short answer is "not much" and "no."

Not much means a little to much for me...

I cannot for the life of me understand why owners of thriving MMOs feel the need to sell their assets off to the first megacorp that comes calling.

I thought about this too. But look at the market. You have the new Star Wars MMO coming out in about a year - that looks like a real godzilla. You have the new breed of F2P MMOs coming out - all competing seriously for a piece of the MMO pie.

Perhaps the only way that LOTRO would have been able to take it to the next level and survive the competition - would be to have a leveraged by out by a big mega-corp.

We'll see what WB does with the franchise. I too will be disappointed if the quality many of us who have been playing LOTRO now for 3 years begins to fade away or they make changes that really don't fit the game. To be honest, for example, I'm not personally against micro-transitions if they're done right - and it may be the only way MMOs may be able to compete in the future.

But the problems is - doing MTs right when the motivation is so strongly bent on greed where it's very easy for management bean counters to try milking the game player for every dollar they're worth - and reducing quality of game play to the lowest common denominator.

I guess what I'm most worried about is the "lowest common denominator" effect when Big Megacorps like WB. It seems they always try to get away with the least amount of product for the most amount of money. A good example I might like to point out is the new Blu-ray release of the Lord of the Rings films by Peter Jackson - only included the film releases - not extended version cuts etc.

When Peter Jackson was asked to comment on this he said he had no control over what WB did over the Blu-Ray releases - but when he was working with Newline - they didn't want to release a DVD where the customer felt cheated, and so stuffed the Lord of the Rings DVD releases with chalk full of features.

I guess for me that's the pith of the WB takeover of LOTRO. Will new management try a least is most approach or will they honor the quality of the game, the employees that have worked for 3 years on this game - and instead of milking it for every dollar it's worth - promote quality and long term growth in the game?

Let's hope so. This may not be all bad for Turbine, though. You gotta think they could do a lot with some of the IPs that Warner Bros. has, like Harry Potter and the DC Comics stuff (Superman, Batman, etc.).

HP, yes please before I'm too old and ashamed for playing an MMO based on that IP. *drools*
