For World of Warcraft, I'm thinking it'd have to be the Pandaren as a playable race. Its one of those things that everyone who is actually a fan of the lore of the Warcraft saga wants deeply. It will never happen as long as China is still a big part of Blizzard's plan for WoW, but if the legal battles over there turn south, it's something that could possibly happen.

Are you kidding? WoW jumped the shark in an engineer's motorcycle.

Anyway, players will ALWAYS want more. It seems games fold when players DON'T get what they want

If you think that the motorcycle was jumping the shark, what do you call the helicopter? A flying machine is much more of an advanced type of craft than a motorcycle, and the flying machine has been secured in Warcraft lore as far back as Warcraft 2. And what do you say to the steam tanks? I hardly call any of these things "jumping the shark". They're all completely plausible in WoW.

They jumped the shark by letting non engineers be able to use it. Yes that's a big qq from me

Yeah, I don't see that as jumping the shark either. I'm one of the least mechanically inclined people I know, but I can drive a dirt bike like nobody's business. I've got only the vaguest idea of what makes it go, but I can still tear ass around the desert.

With all the stuff WoW has done, I still think player housing will be their last gasp attempt to revive interest as the game dies. They've been whispering about it (and the players have been begging for it) since beta, but it still remains elusive.

It *is* strange that WoW seems to be the last holdout for player housing. One might think that player housing was considered a "standard" feature in a modern MMOG but it is oddly missing from the industry's biggest and most famous title.

Personally, it does not bother me. I currently play EQ2 which, some would say, has the best implementation of player housing in the industry, but I just use my house(s) to dump and sell stuff -- I never linger nor decorate.

Honestly, I'd be more surprised if they ever implemented a "clothing" system, like LotR, where you can designate one set as your "appearance" and the other your statistical gear.

Housing would be another one, but I'll tell you this.
Either system will be heavily dominated by the Blizzard Store, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Each one would be ripe for exaggerated prices. They will affect the game as well, just as the current store does. It may not give you stats, but all the stuff sold counts towards achievements. And if they add in housing, they could just as easily add in a bed that gives you 250% exp instead of the norm 200 from resting, and stacks with heirlooms.
And, they could easily sell Heirloom appearance items, and so on.

In before "Incarna".

This will not be the super happy thing that will make you enjoy EVE. It will be just another way to do the same things, but as a person not a ship.

I'm having trouble with the concept of this article. Reprinting the Black Lotus, a terribly overpowered, rare, and expensive card would revive interest in Magic: The Gathering? That seems pretty implausible. Even if you get rid of the rare and expensive, all it'll do is turn the game into a card tossing contest, given that the card is the optimal solution to so many situations.

FFXI's level cap raise is the result of natural game progression. WoW's been doing that for 6 years, it's not really a big deal if FF does it too.

WoW's old world reconstruction comes with the realization that even after 6 years, there's still nobody who can contend with Blizzard's behemoth, so it's up to Blizzard to clear the table and prepare a fresh meal. They're not giving into fans, they're realizing that no other MMO company wants to step up to bat and make a game that doesn't feature grind as a bullet point on the back of the box.

It's when MMOs stop trying to cater to the tastes of players that we have a problem, and guess what? Forced cash-shop grind all nighters are now the norm. We need more companies making games that players are actually excited about and will enjoy playing.

I think that is the point, SirNiko; the article's about moves that, while they may initially rekindle the interest of old-timers, are likely to cause long-term problems.

Any game that introduces zombies has run out of ideas. Except if they are apt to the storyline from the beginning (ie its supernatural MMO).

I knew this was true with crates, but for zombies too?

A whole MMO about hiding from and surviving zombies would be pretty sweet.

When Wrath of the Lich King came out, people were constantly saying on the forums that Blizzard was "cashing in on the Lich King awesomeness way too quickly" and they'll "never top it". Now they're repeating this for Cataclysm, it seems.

In other words, I disagree; I don't think there's a point when a game is "at it's best", all it means is that the developers went downhill from that point. Hell, with many of the Magic: The Gathering expansions, players keep saying that such-and-such set is the end-all be-all, and then the next set comes out and the excitement starts up all over again.

[Except Kamigawa. That junk was shit.]

Planetside seemed to do this after 'core combat' when they realized the new combat zones weren't drawing the numbers they'd hoped for... so they implemented 'mechs'. Not just the MAX armor suits, but full blown 'mech-warrior' type vehicles. Once I saw this, I knew that sony wouldn't be able to top themselves in that game, and I settled in for the long wait to planetside 2 (while in the meantime burning through betas of games like tabula rasa).
