Well, it's not the genre-saving 3D sandbox that many long time Ultima vets have been pining for, but it's a start. Electronic Arts today announced the availability of Lord of Ultima, a new MMO/strategy hybrid set in the revered Ultima universe.
The free-to-play browser-based game features trading, alliance creation, army creation, diplomacy, and resource management. Developed by EA subsidiary Phenomic, the game was designed from the ground up to be accessible to a wide audience.
"Lord of Ultima was designed to ensure that everyone, from strategy newcomers to diehard fans, can make it to the top of the leader board. Phenomic is committed to building dynamic communities that delight players as they interact with the game, each other and the legendary world of Ultima," said Volker Wertich, Phenomic Creative Director.

Ugh...
How is any of this Ultima? Even UO was a huge departure, but at least Lord British was there.

Haha I love it when moronic marketeers write this sort of drivel.
I mean what the hell is that supposed to mean?
So, EA; I can spend hours upon hours in your 'game', learning the intricacies and becoming a good player, only to have a newcomer come in and trounce me?
Sounds like a great design. Not.

Talk about an over-saturated genre. These city/army building turn based strategy games are simply overflowing all over. For some reason everybody and his Brother thinks that they have to put up their own version. There really are far too many of them out already, and more coming out every day. They're all nearly the same too, except for a few futuristic ones. Maybe if it was Old West or Current Day or something different, but not another medieval turn based strategy city/army building, resource management, blah, it makes me gag a little.
