When character creation previews started emerging for Final Fantasy XIV, one of the oft-heard bits of speculation was that there would be some way to customize your character's undergarments. Of course, the idea is on its face rather ridiculous, except for one thing: according to the most recent test article released by Famitsu, you can do precisely that. One of the points discussed from this latest bout with the game are the equipment slots available, twelve in total and including one's underclothes. While we shudder at the thought of farming a boss for underwear, it's most likely a cosmetic option.
The remainder of the article, helpfully translated by FFXIVCore, goes into more details on the game's menus and emotes. The emotes are apparently quite detailed, even including shifting facial expressions. Most of the menu discussion will likely be familiar to Final Fantasy XI players, but even veterans are encouraged to take a look at the full translation. After all, lately it's rarer to not have new Final Fantasy XIV info to digest, and even little things like being able to move windows around the UI are welcome changes.

While I wouldn't go out of the way to pimp my boxers, it just goes to show the amount of player customization FFXIV is going to offer.

I don't think it's half as ridiculous as the author. Why should the underwear be any less stupid than, say, a pet following you around?

Because for people to see a pet following you around, you don't have to take off your clothes.
But then again, with the frequency that people do that (not including that whole roleplaying thing), I'm not surprised.

Well, as long as you can't take them off... Otherwise this game will make the US media even more upset than Mass Effect did. And if I think of the number of people running around in their undies in other MMO's...

Eliot, you don't remember panty raids in Phomiuna Aqueducts? You already farm bosses (kinda) for underwear in FFXI. :p

Can't wait to grind for my epic banana hammock. In real life I wear mine backwards so I have a place to store my wallet.

I wonder if it's just the color of the underwear you can change or the actual set. I love the FFXI swim wear , maybe that's what they are going for a way for people to wear festival wear under the armor.
Yes to movable windows in the UI!

As an ex-Aion fan, I am really looking forward to this game as being the style I am looking for, and a fulfilling experience at the same time. However, we should never underestimate the power of nice underwear.

I think it's a nice touch.
This'll further help distuinguish your character from others. A unique bit of customization available to FFXIV players.
"But undergarments won't be visible, how's that gonna make you noticable?"
The same could be said for character faces. Usually those are covered by some type of helmet or mask and even the majority of a character's body may be covered up. It's simply piece of mind to know that when stripped of all their armor everyone won't be running around in the exact same thing: that at their core, our characters are different from one another.
Hurray.
