The Might and Magic franchise is coming to the MMORPG genre, courtesy of publishing giant Ubisoft and the Chinese development studio known as TQ Digital. The original Might and Magic series, considered by many to be a classic example of the early PC roleplaying game genre, was rebooted by Ubisoft in 2006 with Heroes of Might and Magic V, and later with Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.
The new MMORPG, Heroes of Might and Magic Online, is slated for closed beta in May 2010. The game will marry elements from an early entry in the franchise, Heroes of Might and Magic III, to the visual upgrades established in the last two Ubisoft games, culminating in a 2.5D massively multiplayer experience featuring a turn-based persistent world. (Perhaps similar to the 3D but turn-based Atlantica Online.)
The game will feature eight factions, sixteen classes, and a variety of campaign missions. Additionally, TQ Digital will be hosting a variety of PvP events, including Team PK, Extreme PK, and various Guild combat events. You can register for the closed beta as well as visit the official website, and don't forget to stay with Massively for more info on Heroes of Might and Magic Online as it becomes available.

Heroes of Might and Magic II and III were two of my most loved games growing up.
I doubt I'll be checking this out though, I can't imagine a game like HOMM translating to an MMO and still keeping any of the special flavor that made them such a great games.

I totally agree!
My bro-in-law worked as a level designer for HMM III and through him I was able to write one of the quests for the game! :D
I hope they do a good job of this, I wasn't super thrilled with V (though I didn't give it a lot of time and when it didn't work on Vista/7 then it became useless to me).

Ubisoft .... hopefully they can provide a better server platform for this than they do for their copy protections of current games.....

Ubisoft take over of Might and Magic = FAIL
Heroes of Might and Magic as an MMO = FAIL
Chinese style PVP approach to an MMO = FAIL
All of these together cannot equal anything but FAIL.

Heroes II & III are legendary to me. Brings back so many memories. I don't know, this can be good maybe. I hope it will.

its kind of funny how Evony and Heroes of Gaia have gotten the big publishers to get off their butts and release web games.

I'm pretty sure that whatever Evony does has zero effect on the games industry.

This sounds awesome, it's good to see that they stuck with the familiar formula while making the jump to an on-line format. The cynic in me thinks that their development decision to go with that developer will result in an Asian mass market experience that won't go over well outside of that region. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

What was fun (for me) about this game in its earlier incarnations was assembling my little team of (NPC) heroes and heading out for adventures.
Now that it will be an MMO, I presume this will mean "goodbye NPC team, hello LFG." Ugh. No thanks to that.
But I'll wait and see, maybe there will be enough Atlantica Online influence in this new game to permit players at least the option of grouping up with other players or using NPCs.

This MMORPG will require a constant internet connection, like some other Ubisoft releases.
