After one iteration at the start of the new year and another run that coincided with VanaFest 2010, you would think that Final Fantasy XI was done with the Mog Bonanza for a while. But you'd apparently be wrong, as the official site has just announced that it will be running once again. But it's kind of understandable when you realize it's to celebrate the momentous eight-year milestone the game is hitting. That's a fine reason for players to start up the number-guessing engine in their heads again, especially when the rewards are still more wonderful prizes for every adventurer.
Most of the rules from prior offerings still apply here -- a maximum of ten marbles per character, with prizes handed out in ascending ranks. Getting just the last digit right nets some small but pleasing prizes, while getting all five brings huge piles of gil or rare equipment. While it's not on par with the Relic and Mythic weapons offered at VanaFest, they're still desirable for almost any player. So mark your calendar foor May 16th, when marbles go on sale, and enjoy a solid eight years of Final Fantasy XI.

I've tried to play FFXI three times. The first two I was defeated by the game's strongest monster - PlayOnline. The last time I lasted about five minutes. I still have a couple weeks on my trial but I really find the game confusing to start. Starting with the control scheme. It took a bunch of Internet searches just to figure out where to increase resolution (run a config utility? Really?) and how to open the main menu. I'm not saying I need my hand held, but I've played a lot of MMOs and this game doesn't help you much.
It also took almost a full day to update. And to play the game takes like twenty clicks.
I really hope they improve a lot with FFXIV.

SE SAYS they've learned from the Playonline stupidity. But.
Even applying for the beta is a confusing, needlessly complicated mess. Don't get me started on the security token that added two more roadblocks to the stupidly long logging in process. The problem is they added these Square Enix accounts, which are NOT your playonline account or your FFXI account. They all have seperate UN/PWs.
It makes things really confusing when they randomly ask for you SE account UN/PW, you enter your PlayOnline PW not realizing they are different things, frustration ensues.
That's the FFXI team for you: The more complicated the better. From game features (MMM...) to simply logging in, EVERYTHING FFXI-related has about 9 too many steps or facets.

Breezer the new SE accounts are made for the exact reason you're grumbling about. Put everything into your Square Enix account and you end up with what?
ONE ACCOUNT. It works exactly like the Blizzard Battlenet parent account and the authenticator is also only a plus but highly recommended.
Since I merged my accounts, I only have to enter ONE password at the playonline screen because I don't have the authenticator yet.

Wait I have to correct myself, it is true you need to put in a password twice at login for FFXI because they make you use the playonline AND the ffxi login, and the reason for that is you can add more then one FFXI account in your playonline login screen.. Which I bet not many people use.
But since they are making us use SE accounts for the FFXIV beta I'm seeing that for that game you'll only need the one account and password. And the whole playonline thing is scrapped. :D
