The definition of "troll" is not "everyone that disagrees with you"

That said, Sakura Park

I don't think THAC0 was claiming you were a troll because he disagrees with your opinions. He was claiming you were a troll because while you admittedly don't even play STO, you continue to remind Massively's readers about perceived injustices to a group of people (patrons of Cryptic games) that you don't belong to.

Actually in this case, Thaco is more of the troll if you go by the actual definition of trolling. The term trolling comes from a term used in sport fishing where a boat tows bait or a lure around hoping a large fish that can swim the speed of the boat will then go after the bait. Forum trolling isn't someone who posts an opposite opinion on a subject, it's someone who posts something they know will bait another to post negatively no matter how false or outrageous the post might be. Thaco used Kdolo's name as trolling bait to attempt to lure Kdolo into replying to their comment.

Irony is, it looks like Kdolo would have never even posted here this time if he wasn't baited into replying, which just gave a reason for another day with a Sakura Park mention. =P

I doubt Kdolo wouldn't have come and posted a "Sakura Park" if i hadn't baited him anyway.

But just the fact that I "trolled" this time doesn't diminish my point which is the fact Kdolo posts "Sakura Park" on every other single Cryptic thread just to troll and be annoying.

But that's just it, i don't just do it to be annoying. As i've explained before, the whole Sakura Park thing is emblematic of Cryptic's ongoing nature, one they have yet to change in any meaningful way that doesn't include repairing the fallout on some additional slight to their own community.

I am told to get to the bridge of your ship is in the right-hand minimap menu icons - I'm not figuring it out. :)

I am a tactical officer right now and figure to reach end-game by end of this month. I have been thinking of starting a second character then and replay from the beginning as a blue shirt.

The benefit then is that I'll know how everything works, what I want and what to do with all those anomalous readings I keep getting! LOL

Okay: how do I get to the bridge of the U.S.S. Firefly?

there is a button by the minimap, you hit it and it drops down a list of options one of which is visit your bridge.

Thanks, Phil!

I have looked at that menu more times than I can think - perhaps it's the "Options" and "Quit" and all that other stuff that was throwing me of. :)

I think this was a good guide to the beginning of the game for any who are thinking of doing a free trial of the game. You definitely want to do a free trial before toying with the idea of buying this game.

I would like to see a guide for 3-4 weeks after you created that first character though. It would probably look something like this...

Step 1: Login
Step 2: Stare at screen for 20 minutes, check empty mission journal again, accept repeatable daily mission again.
Step 3: Sigh in disgust as you can't stomach doing another exploration mission with zero exploration in it.
Step 4: Realize there's still nothing for you to do but repeat exploration missions you've done 100 times, or redo the handful of STF's that really have no reason to be done again after completing them the first time. It's unlikely you'll find 4 others to do a STF with you 2 weeks after they're implemented and the newness wears off anyway.
Step 4.5: If you like PvP, you can queue up for PvP matches and stare at the screen for 45 minutes before realizing there isn't enough Klingon's left to face you.
Step 5: Logout and be thankful you were able to get to max level playing casually and experience the entire designed game before the 30 free days that came with your box were finished.

Appreciate the article, but blueshirt characters can certainly be more than doctors.

Non-med science characters are combat debuffers for the most part, while medical blueshirts are primarily healers and buffers.

I have both a science officer and a medical officer in STO, and they contribute very different things to the gameplay, both in space, and on the ground.

You can certainly run with a "hybrid" blueshirt if you like, but having one of each type of specialist is also a readily available option.

You can have your Spock and your McCoy, with distinct skills for each.

How do your two different Science officers play differently in space? They should share all the same space abilities and skills, and their differing ground skills should have no effect on space combat.

Agreed. I play as science officer as a science officer, not a medical officer. I've picked up a few points in medical skills and I keep a medical kit on me, but very seldom have I ever used a heal. Debuffs such as Tachyon Harmonics, Tricorder Scan, etc... all work nicely to set up exploit attacks, which allow you to one shot most enemies even when they are at full health (and nearly full shields).

As for space combat, the only way I can see it differing for your Science Officer is if you have different BO skills for each of your characters. I can imagine having a science BO trained in Science Team, Hazard Emitters and Transfer Shield Strength acting as a fairly decent "healer" type in space. But you can do that with any science vessel, regardless of your "class". You just might not be able to get rank III abilities. Of course, when they implement crew transfers that might change.

@Baburnama

Just saw your question now, sorry.

To clarify: blueshirts all have the same **potential** space skills, but I assign and train up different space skills to each character.

Generally speaking, my Science Officer carries the more "aggressive" space skills (e.g. Jam Sensors), while my Medical Officer carries the space skills which buff or assist my ship during combat (e.g. Science Team).

Given that you have a limited number of bridge officer skills available in space for each officer, separating the specialties between two characters allows me a wider range of immediate options in space.

Hope this helps answer your question.

To anyone thinking of trying this game, my advice would be to ignore all above comments good and bad and decide for yourself after having read this article. There are a lot of people who irrationally hate Cryptic, hate Star Trek and/or hate the game and as a result will do their best to ensure their opinion is shared by everyone else.

There are some great deals out there to buy this game (which comes with 30 days free play time) so just decide for yourself and dont pay attention to most recurring posters on here who wont rest until everyone agrees with their negative opinion.

If you dont like it, just move onto the next one, not much has been lost. Dont turn into one of these people we see here so often who hold a grudge.

I love all things Star Trek and I enjoyed the leveling journey to Admiral but I just can't bring myself to re-sub at the moment. I'll wait and see what Season 2 brings so I doubt I'll give it another try until at least July.

Reading the current Engineering Report thread on the official forums just reminds me of a game still in beta.

This game disparately needs a relaunch some time in the future.

Does this game ever offer free trials? I'm mildly interested -- although I am also concerned about seeing so many negative reviews.

I like the Star Trek IP. However, it's the ground combat/missions that interest me most, and yet most reviewers seem to indicate that the ground content is also STO's weakest link. :(
