If someone isn't playing a F2P game simply on principle - that's a bit foolish, especially if it's a good game.

Pay extra for a 3D movie? Yes, if the movie is worth it.

Complaints about people with money having an unfair advantage? What about the guy that has no job, plays 10 hours a day in his Mom's basement. Doesn't he have an unfair advantage because he doesn't have to grind at the office 12 hours a day?

The nerd rage over F2P is pretty lame. I have yet to find a F2P game though that can match the quality and content of WoW or EvE...except maybe SL, which is interesting since it's one MMO in which you can make money with your own in game store.

Did you know, there are over 108 free to play mmorpg's in the US alone, out at this very moment. Now, we can argue quality over all those games, sure, but let's not and for the sake of argument we'll just say that most of them are total crap. However, that's still over *seriously, over* 108 mmorpg's in the US market at this very moment. I'm also only counting three browser mmorpg games in that list as well (free realms, earth eternal, and of course Runescape). Now, let's not dance around this too long but let's just say for sure that these games don't run on good intentions and require a fair amount of money to stay active, and having said that, let's get to my real point. With a number that big, it's very hard to believe that Beau is in the minority with his unspeakable and often twisted love of the f2p market. And i'll be fair, I didn't check how many p2p games there are in the US market at this time, and i'll be more fair and say that the player base for any one p2p mmorpg means more than the playerbase for most (not all) of those 108+ games, because each person on those p2p games is paying at least something a month to be there, and in many of those cases had to pay for the game itself. Still, that's quite a large number, even you must admit.

By the way, that isn't a comprehensive total. I didn't crawl the net, far and wide, to find every single free to play game in existence. I picked the total from the kind of list you see on just about any free mmo directory on the web. On top of that, I didn't include every f2p game listed, only the one's i'd actually played in the past. Lastly, I didn't include freemium games such as Wizard 101. I did include free realms, and some will argue that it is a freemium, some will argue that it's not, whatever. It's there, live with it.

To be *really* fair, I don't have a twisted love for just FTP games. I have a twisted love for all MMORPGs. I have about 5 or 6 sub-based games that I am playing right now, and have covered them in podcasts for almost 4 years! :)

I'm an artist and the analogy of taking a piece of art home and trying it out and showing it off and so forth was... interesting. I'll take that idea a little further... some artists actually do this, and most galleries have a kind of "try before you buy" policy that allows potential buyers to put a piece over their couch for a deposit before they commit to the purchase.

Now an artist willing to allow someone to take a piece without getting any money or real commitment, is desperate. A customer that needs to take something home for a trial, is typically not very committed and is likely just taking it for a short spin. Either way it's not a very solid business model.

To me the whole point being overlooked here is that if an artist has the quality to demand a sale, he/she does so. If a customer is serious about buying a piece they do so. And the same for MMO's if you have the ability to produce a AAA quality MMO, you do that, and then you use the sub model. If you're a gamer and you want to play the "best" games and you have the money for a box and a sub, then you buy a box and a sub.

I'm not saying that there is no place for "F2P" or that they are all terrible games or whatever, but I do think "F2P" is basically the minor leagues.

I don't play F2P at the moment because they require more grinding than the P2P model. IN Allods case not only would earning a larger inventory going to take months to accomplish, but your existing inventory kept gewtting full of quest items that you could not store in your bank. Thus you would be forced to purchase the larger inventory. At the same time I took a couple days off to take care of other business and when I came back a new update occurred on launching the client. At the end of the update I logged in only to be told that my time had expired. I guess I hadn't spent any money in their cash shop, yet. Uninstalled the game from my hard drive.
My previous experience was Dungeon Runners.. I bought the game and played for free for about 2 months. The last month I had decided to pay the $5.00 monthly fee to be able to use purple items on my character. After that month I decided not to pay for the next month. Upon logging in my character was sans equipment. It seems that the purple equipment I had earned while paying was no longer mine to use. Another game that was uninstalled. Just a question. I have been thinking about DDO. Does the mix of F2P/P2P in DDO take items away when you decide not to pay after paying once?

I guess my major issue with F2P games is mostly the quality. I am not sure if there are any true AAA titles that are F2P. I never found that level of quality that was in traditional P2P games.

Another point I think about when people talk about buying their way through content is that all content should be fun or already have a system to bypass them.

As an American, I believe the situation should be equal. And I don't feel F2P system currently works well.

Lack of funds to buy a mount isn't a "hardship" that should be just skipped over. The game wouldn't have any high points if you had unlimited gold and 15 million hp. I'm fine with stuff like exp potions that don't have a huge bonus on them. Sort of like rest XP in a bottle though.

I have given up on MMOs while I wait for a title to come out that isn't just a singleplayer game where people just brag as if virtual goods determine your worth as a person.

but I would "try" out a F2P game if an actual AAA title came out. I haven't found a F2P play I really enjoyed long enough to actually look at their Cashshop. But I also didn't have to pay for a client or monthly fee to find out. Then again there are free trials for quality games.

I'm finding the trend of DLC packs for 10-15 dollars pretty good though. If the DLC pack isn't released 12 days after the original game.

So I might play a F2P type system if they added areas for a fee. Unlocked forever. So I can pay for content and would force the company to actually keep updating the game.

My major gripe with the F2P business model is that it changes actual game design, it changes it to a point I'm put off by it. Actually the P2P model isn't so hot either but they have more incentive to give you "free" content. Also, I always feel like the other shoe is about to drop...
