Looks and plays like Final Fantasy to me, combat and all, under the veneer of an alpha build. Not sure what others were expecting, but for fans of the Final Fantasy franchise, this may hit the sweet spot. What surprises me, however, is that this site appears to condone this seemingly NDA-breaking leak.

Agreed.

It's my only deterrence from the game so far. Absolutely lazy and pathetic.

They have some differences. Miqo'te are less catty than the Mithra, especially in the face. Lalafell are less cutesy in the face than Tarutaru, no brown dot on the nose, more elven looking. Roegadyn look more human-like than Galka, with a much more human face and no tail. Even the Erzen look slightly more down to earth compared to their Elvaan predecessors. Plus Square Enix has hinted that we'll see Roegadyn females and Miqo'te males, maybe even as playable, so that'd be different.

Hey Massively, if you are gonna post leaked info, at least credit it to the right people. Kotaku was the first big news site with the balls to post it:
http://kotaku.com/5516194/heres-the-final-fantasy-xiv-alpha-tester-guide

Plus, all of the leaks have been coming from:
http://www.bluegartrls.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=92

Give credit where credit is due.

They linked the Kotaku article no less than twice, both in the post and Source button at the bottom of the post. It's been there since long before you commented. I suggest you apologize. You criticize them for not linking Kotaku, when they already had linked it no less than twice.

Are they really still using that awkward menu based combat? It was what i hated most about FFXI and they seem to want to keep it going. I guess this isn't the game for me.

Here's more info on the UI and menu:

Not saying this is going to sway anyone, but they HAVE worked on it. :P

The video is such poor quality it's hard to tell what's going on with the combat. However, it almost looked like he used a skill, waited for his ATB gauge to fill up, then used another, repeat. If so, that's not going to appeal to the vast majority of MMO gamers out there. However, it's still alpha (early alpha). And the game does look gorgeous otherwise.

As for the music and races:
1) Music: That's FF music for you. Although it hasn't been as good since Uematsu left.
2) Races: It wasn't laziness. SE wanted to offer FFXI players familiar races.

Cool. Keep the old guys but bring in some new, too.

People say they might still have some surprises under wraps in the way of races but at this point I highly doubt it. That's something you'd want to spring early to get people interested, or at least you'd think they would.

"1) Music: That's FF music for you. Although it hasn't been as good since Uematsu left."

Funny thing about that, FFXIV is the first FF game since FF9 that Uematsu is scoring alone. This is pure Uematsu, not even any collaborations. So your comment just looks weird. Unless you're saying Uematsu's music hasn't been as good since Uematsu left Square Enix, in which case okay. The music reminds me of his old school stuff though, so it doesn't seem that bad.

The combat system of waiting for ATB to fill up then attack is actually a big part of some of the more popular FF games(VII notably), so I don't see it being that alienating. FFXIV is coming out on consoles, and console gamers were the ones who played FF7 back in the day. Maybe they went ATB as a way of satiating their fans' thirsts for a more familiar combat system.

They could still shake up the races while giving the same old familiarity. They could add female Roegadyn and male Miqo'te whilst still keeping the old status quo. If they don't like female Roegadyn and male Miqo'te, they don't have to roll them. I'm still hoping they might try adding a new playable race for fun though. :)

How is an ATB gauge filling any different from a global cooldown? Confused by your statement.

The more I see of this game, the more I want to play it.
