Even when everything's going just fine, monthly billing in an MMO brings up the problems of players feeling entitled to quite a bit of free content and getting rather annoyed if it's not forthcoming. It also raises questions of how badly you really want to play the game in question. Luckily for most games, the rebilling cycle for subscriptions is automatic and requires no conscious attention from fans... at least, unless something goes wrong. And unfortunately for Warhammer Online and Dark Age of Camelot subscribers, something did indeed go wrong. Players are being billed more than once for their subscriptions.
The customer service team at Mythic Entertainment was quick to explain that they were aware of the issue and working with their vendor to resolve it. Unfortunately, the official solution requires a call and a fair bit of time spent confirming and reversing the charges, rather than being a straight refund behind the scenes. As the game's studio is hosting several of Warhammer Online's blogging pundits, it could hardly have come at a worse time. Warhammer Online and Dark Age of Camelot players are advised to read the official statement and check the charges on your account very carefully.

I've no idea what the figures are these days, I re-subbed a few weeks ago and did bump into someone in Tier 2, but I didn't get drawn in and cancelled again. I suspect, however, that most people are in Tier 4 so unless you're hanging around in that part of the game you're unlikely to get a true feel for it.
I also think it's one of those funny situations where one minute everyone claims there's no-one playing the game, then there's something like the present US billing crisis and all of a sudden the boards are full of disgruntled subscribers threatening to quit over it!

Put one of Obama's kids to work investigating this and other irresponsible crap the major game companies do. We need a weekly report from her, on television and cable networks, with details of the punishments she orders for the corporate sluts responsible for these blunders.

think about the people who got billed $1000 and didn't have the funds in their checking account. most banks will honor the overdraft and charge probably another $1000 in fees. then once you have no money in your account and huge fees how do you pay for gas? food? this is going to be a HUGE problem for some people and will also put a huge dent in these 2 MMOs

With no new significant new content in the foreseeable future for the next year (or two, if ever), and bugs, balance, and performance still issues for the game, the billing issues aren't a surprise at all.
Its too bad, with such a great setting to work with, that they couldn't have done a better job of it.
The death knell occurred quite some time ago. This is merely a death shudder.
