Xennith, I re-read my own post. I made mistake. I was confusing Laser Sword with Sword Cyclone. Sorry for the confusion.

"Laser Sword was altered, not nerfed as Patrick seems to be convinced so. He goes on to say the skill has increased damage and cost. That doesn't sound nerfed to me."

Uh, no he didn't. Laser Sword was one paragraph in the whole thing, and he did not say laser sword got increased damage. It had the damage reduced, and the resist debuff was changed to only work on particle resistance.

It sounds like you're actually talking about sword cyclone. Which, the new energy costs are a bit insane.

Also, if you've been following the forums, you'd see the Devs have basically admitted to spreadsheet balancing. For example, they're buffing melee, but haymaker got reduced in damage in the latest iteration. Why? Because when they removed the 'lockdown' on the haymaker charge, the cost naturally had to go up, and in order to keep the cost the same, the damage had to go down. So in their attempt to buff haymaker, they ended up lowering the damage because their spreadsheets told them to. That's spreadsheet balancing.

@Blackstream: Another example of their spreadsheet balancing being obnoxious, the significant nerf to Bountiful Chi Resurgence. The power wasn't deemed as overpowered at all by the devs, but they found out it wasn't following the rules of the proper table on their spreadsheet, so they gimped the healing it delivers significantly and tuned up the power's cost noticeably. Did this have anything to do with the power's real performance? Not based on what they had to say... they decided to "correct" their mistake so that it would conform to their spreadsheet tables for pretty much no reason.
And we're talking about something like a 40% reduction in BCR's potency, here.

Judging from the comments (because I no longer play), it looks like they didn't address the main issues at all: enemies run away, vision is still an issue (melee characters don't see dispersed enemies charging their special attacks), and the damage overall is still way, way lower and less AoE-centric than ranged abilities.

Man it's hard to believe the game has been out as long as it has and still hasn't gotten this right.

Hi guys. I'm the dev responsible for the melee review, and just wanted to point you towards some posts I've made on our PTS forums regarding these changes:

http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=104451

http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=104601

And lots of replies in threads if you'd like to search.

Just wanted to reiterate that this is definitely an organic process, everything is still very much on the Test servers, and that I'm working on this every day, interacting with the community as much as possible to make sure this review is done right before it goes to the Live servers.

Thanks,

Akinos

Good to know someone is working on it.

I wanted to like Champions Online, but the melee systems put in at launch drove me away fairly quickly. The largest issues I had were the knockback that seemed to be in everything; and the blocking system.

I felt that I was not getting enough survivability out of investing in Constitution and Strength. The blocking system seemed to assume that I had a full field of view for every ranged attack being fired at me, which was more or less inconsistent with being in melee.

I think it is reprehensible that the author AND the editors let such a slanderous piece of writing slip through. The fact that the author writes about a patch that is TEST only and actively being tweaked based on community feedback is horrendous, let alone that he writes as if this were in production!

Stop writing fiction and check your facts! An apology would be nice if you want to recover any form of credibility.

Massively is usually very very pro-Cryptic, so I did not get this post.

He should really correct it by saying that it is on test not on live. The whole going live thing really caught me by surprise being that my main is a DB character that stayed true to the MA set with the exception of the Might blocking power.

I am not a huge fan of Cryptic, but they are getting better. Anyone who has read my comments here will attest to that. But this article is a little misleading. I might not like them, but providing a balanced point of view is always preferable to going to either extreme.

I usually enjoy opinion pieces, but this one definitely feels more at home on the Test forums than here. Just because you have a built-in audience, doesn't mean you should use them unnecessarily.

Of course, Massively has been blurring the line between blogging and news reporting, so maybe it's the kind of article/blog post feel that they want. Newsatorial? Blogreport? *shrug*

Either way, I'm just concerned that if individual power changes on TEST servers are being discussed more frequently, the readers might start missing out on actual news articles in the noise.

My largest complaint, besides the horrid review of powers under development, is that he EXPLICITLY stated these were live. That is a blatant lie, and it went through all editorial staff to get published. AND there has been no update to correct this.

When was the last time anything hit the test server that didn't go live?

Hint: never

Hans, that is incorrect. Changes on PTS are changed often, sometimes daily, before the release. Cryptic is actively engaging the player base on PTS and making changes from all feedback. Hell, Cryptic's Akinos livechats with them in the Melee channel! How can you even say nothing changes on the PTS?

Only took what, six months, a major nearly player-base ending "expansion" fiasco and the departure of Roper before we're seeing communication and positive changes?

Too little, too late. A whole lot of six month subscriptions are up and aren't being renewed, period.

Champions is dying. CoX Going Rogue is the deathblow, and WoW Cataclysm will claim anyone still around after that.

There's one instance of MC, Canada, Desert and Lemuria these days. If you're lucky, there's 2 Vibora Bays. That's it.

Servers have < 1000 on primetime. VB did nothing to stop the bleeding, and the Melee patch is a joke. Two words: Force Cascade.

It's over, people.

Arcadian what is your name in Champions and when will you next be playing?

Because anyone playing Champions would know the population has gone up since Jan/Feb. Recently there have been 6 to 8 instances in MC, while yes Desert and Canada usually hover between 3 and 5. VB, MI and Lemuria have always been less, due to the lower number of players at max level.

I don't care if people do not like the game, but stop lying about it.

Also this article was a joke Patrick. You mislead with the opening statement saying this patch is live, when it's in PTS and changes are being made

How do so many people who do not play this game know so much about it?
