There are male mito'qe and female roegadyn in Final Fantasy XIV. There's no word currently on whether or not they'll be playable, but the latest information put out via Famitsu indicates that they are there, at least.
For some players, simply knowing that the somewhat awkwardly monogendered races from Final Fantasy XI will be reaching the wild shores of sexual dimorphism will make the latest bits of news palatable. Others would rather hear about the actual mechanics of playing the game -- and luckily for everyone, that's included with the information as well. It's confirmed that zone transitions are seamless, as is the background music (most likely with careful crossfades). There are stat differences between the much-discussed clans, but they're not a huge deal -- a far bigger difference is every class getting early access to teleportation and warp spells to make transportation less problematic.
We even get a bit of meta-information telling us that testing on the Playstation 3 should be coming in another couple phases. While there's nothing world-shattering, the picture being paiinted is increasingly alluring, and it's hard to argue Final Fantasy XIV isn't learning a lot from its predecessor. The full list of leaked facts can be found here.

"You can only play as female Miqo’te, but males exist."
This is probably to keep everyone from naming their male Miqo’te Liono.
Thunder...Thunder... Thundercats HOOOOO!

A lot of hype is suddenly being generated about this game. I'm certainly looking forward to it, and there is a large possibility that it will become my primary MMO over TOR if I keep seeing good things about it.
I would like to see Square-Enix implement both genders for every race/clan. FFXI is sorely lacking in the character customization aspect, and this would be one step in making sure FFXIV remedies that shortcoming.
On a slightly related note, I really hope that they are not going to be treating the feedback they receive from North American and European players as "less valuable" than feedback from Japanese players. I think the former two are potentially bigger markets for this game if SE plays their cards right.

The Final Fantasy world has a lot of neat characters, and a lot of great stories to tell.
But if this game has "world bosses" a la FFIX, count me out. I won't do it again. It only encouraged rampant botting, and the Japanese had a built in advantage.

I would guess that the PS3 support is going to hold this game back in many ways. Its not so horrible that its being designed for a gamepad as long as the final release has good keyboard and mouse control. What concerns me more is the graphical limitations of the PS3 having some spill-over into the PC graphics. The PS3 is coming up on 4 years old. Its not exactly cutting edge anymore.

Then play on PC and increase the resolution. Then SHUT THE HELL UP.
The incessant whining on this blog about console MMOs has got to stop. If you don't want to play, don't play. FFXI has lasted 8 great years without you. FFXIV will do just fine too.
There are plenty of PC MMOs out there to pick from. Of course most of them look like PS1 games running at 60 fps, but if that's appeases you, go to it. God forbid someone might want to do something different.

Erm I think that was a fairly obscene reply @Koehler83, his point "will the PS3 format provide limitations to the game in terms of what can be processed" is a fair one, its true to say that current decent pc builds are of much higher capability of the ps3, the ps3 can't even run Crysis.
Hope that it won't be an issue, the music, the lore, its everything I love in an MMo, that immersive effect that the genuine amount of love square enix puts into their titles will make it a winner I'm sure.
By the way can you change settings for your massively account, password and so on?

The comparison between the PS3 and the PC isn't quite the same as between the PS2 and PCs at that time. Have you seen God of War 3? Uncharted? Final Fantasy XIII? Competent developers know how to make games look just as good, if not better, on consoles as on PCs. And most developers think they haven't even reached the limits of what the consoles can do at the time. Just because a PC can be more powerful doesn't mean the games represent it. And SE has much more knowledge working with consoles than other companies.

It's not an issue, they've already stated they are not doing like FFXI and restricting the PC's evolution to it's console version. Both version will have their own textures appropriate to the platform, and on the PC I imagine you'll be able to adjust things. :D

I would also add that MMO graphics are always a few steps behind standard single player games because of accessibility. Sure it would be cool to see an MMO running the Crysis engine but really, only a handful of potential customers could actually play it optimally. I think the best graphics a PS3 can offer will be leaps and bounds better than any MMO out right now (as long as the resolution can scale for your monitor).

I am hoping the PS3 version will support use of mouse and keyboard. I am hopeful that Square-Enix will consider it, because that will make it much easier for western gamers to pick up on their PS3s. The PS3 at $300 is an attractive alternative to spending $2,000 on a PC capable of playing a new game at a decent frame rate. I believe mouse and keyboard support on the PS3 version may be the key to getting a large amount of subs in North America and Europe.
As an aside, FFXI can be tweaked to look reasonably decent on a newer PC. I would say it looks better than most pre-WoW PC MMOs, and I would debate that the character models themselves look better than WoW's when the game is tweaked (though the environments certainly do not look better). The problem with the game for me is that it feels clunky with a mouse and keyboard.

Please don't use the "it costs $2,000 to make a decent gaming PC" argument again, that crap gets old. Consoles fanboys say it all the time, and it's just annoyingly not true. I got my computer for under $500 on Christmas'08, and it runs Mass Effects 1 & 2 with a steady 30 FPS. ME1+2 are nearly top of the line on graphics and I didn't spend $2,000. I'm not sure where you got this $2,000 number. I'm sure I could overinflate costs and make a PS3 purchase somewhere up there too, mostly through listing 20 games pirated for free on PC and bought on PS3 for $60 each(totaling $1,200).

Dude... Really?
I agree with RogueJedi86. That dumb argument console fanboys like to toss out about $2,000+ to build a decent gaming PC is garbage! You want to see a decent gaming rig? Go pick up the annual Maximum PC budget gamer issue. They usually build a very good gaming PC for around $700 USD.

I'm so pumped to play this mmo. Long time FFXI player and can't wait to get back. Does anyone know if there will be any voice communication for console players ?
