The term "social games" or its frequently-used cousin "Facebook games" is one that gets talked about a lot by MMO gamers these days. Specifically, it gets talked about in a similar tone to the UbiSoft DRM nightmare or the entire Infinity Ward fiasco. So it's going to turn some heads -- and raise some hackles -- when Richard Garriott moves into the social gaming scene. Creator of the genre-setting Ultima Online and the much-discussed Tabula Rasa, Garriott has explained in an interview with Gamasutra why he made the shift and what he thinks of the social gaming scene as it stands now.
In short, he sees in social and mobile games the same things that marked other major shifts in the overall philosophy of making games, making them the next big wave. It's not an uncommon sentiment, but he goes on to point out that many of the virtues these games have, such as no installation and no up-front cost, are desirable traits in any game. He goes on to discuss stories in games and how he thinks that even social games can have them, even as he advocates less emphasis on freeform player-generated narratives. Take a look at the full interview to get a clearer picture on what we can expect from Garriott next -- and considering his place in the field of MMOs, it should be notable.

Just wondering how the lawsuit against NCSoft is going.
He should buy back Tabula Rasa and just put it up on Facebook.
Using Portalarium plugin that way they won't have to use Arenanet's
game engine. It cost NCsoft only 5.7 million for TR that is small change
compared to what he spent going into space.

He has the vision to see that facebook games have a production cost less than a million dollars with a payout of 10x that. Where as traditional mmorpgs are looking towards 10s to 100s of millions of dollars with no where near that kind of quick cash out.
The fact is, he is a has been. Ultima online is 10 years old with the series it self reaching on 20. The majority of the gaming population has never played any of his games. After going through 50 million dollars of ncsofts money and crashing their western product line into the ground, there isn't anyone left who would either hire him or front him the money for a real mmo.

Honestly, while he was a pioneer/visionary in the past (and rightfully wealthy because of it), he hasn't done anything of worth in over a decade. And even then he had lots of help. All he's doing now is hopping on the most obvious Internet-gaming driven fad.

Well, right now is place in the field of MMOs is pretty low. I still have a box here with his name on the cover for a game we all know crashed and burned.
The only thing I expect to be notable will be his next big failure. That said, my expectations are so low, he has a wide margin to impress me as a consumer.
