While we heard about Final Fantasy XIV's subraces -- called "clans" -- a week ago from Japanese fansites, today SquareEnix has released the details on their North American site. Each race has two clans, which totals 10 unique selections by the time all is said and done.
Fans familiar with Final Fantasy XI's races will be pleasantly surprised by the variety offered here. The elfin Elezen are now divided into the Wildwood (forest archers) and Duskwight (grubby cave-dwellers) clans. If cutsie dolls are more to your liking, then the Lalafell are up for the job, split between the down-to-earth Plainsfolk or the darker Dunesfolk. The hulking Roegadyn are partial to extreme climates of bitter oceans and volcanic fury, which has resulted in the Sea Wolves and Hellsguard, respectively. Of course, every MMO must offer a traditional human race, which in FFXIV falls to the Hyur, who either identify as the educated Midlanders or the beefy Highlanders. Finally, the cat-like Miqo'te will choose to be either one of the Keepers of the Sun or the Seekers of the Moon.
From running down this list, there's a definite light/dark dichotomy going on here, not just in skin tone but in the clans' basic philosophy. You can find information about the different versions of each of the five primary races by going to World --> Races --> Overview on the Final Fantasy XIV main menu.

I'm happy that they decided to add more to the character creation.

Let's wait and see the breadth of those creation options first.
Clans might not end up amounting to much more than the name inside a field on your character sheet depending on how unique creation options are to said clans. It'd be better if worn items (ie armour) appeared differently for each of the races' subsects. Since SquareEnix tends not to differentiate gear even between species it's probably a bit much to hope each item will have 10 unique skins (20 accounting for gender).

I'm glad to see that SE had something up their sleeve regarding races. I can't wait to play this

I have never been a Final Fantasy player, but reading through the information posted in the past months, I am getting more interested in seeing where they take this new MMO.
P.S. I think you need to add an additional tag to the article. Start your own little theme:

I'm hoping the the flavour text for each race isn't just that, and there are some differences beyond the aesthetics of the clans. It has been said that race will not be as large a factor as in FF11, however I personally can appreciate that some people will have certain areas in which they are more skilled.

I was really looking forward to this game, but the disproportionately small heads on their character models is really freaking me out. I'm not sure I'll be able to deal with it long term. :P Its strange because I don't mind other body parts being out of proportion, but this one gets to me.

The only race I could see having smaller heads than normal is the Elvish people. But that's widith wise and their lanky body help make it look fine and proportional. Other than that, they all look proportional. Humans are 7 1/2 heads tall and they measure right with my sight.
Maybe their armor is fooling you..Or maybe you are to used to other game models that have bigger heads or more up in your face?

I will try this game. FFXI has too much grouping for me and it's been around too long.

Female Roegadyn incoming?

lol Yeah that's what the community is hoping for in general, it would be nice to have male and female equivalents to all the races. For example we know there's female Roegadyn and make Miqo'te models, but they have not been brought to the game yet, in what way SE didn't specify, could be they are NPC only.

@ Mark
They were asked specifically : http://www.ffxivcore.com/wiki/Miqo'te
Scroll down to bottom of the page to find this:
"From Zyuu's e-mail Questionnaire with SE:
Q9. Are there any plans to add female Roegadyn and male Miqo'te?
A. Well, the character model designs are finished...but further details regarding their implementation have yet to be decided."
And no one said anything about having male/female for all races, I just said it would be NICE. ;)

Please mention that this game will focus on gameplay and advancement that is **fun**, instead of the punitive forced-grouping grindfest that XI was.
And when I say "fun", I mean enjoyable as a game in of itself, and palatable to the greater 90% of the MMO market (I.E. those of us that recognize WoW as the best designed MMO gaming experience out there, with SW:TOR looking damned promising for actually including modern game elements like being fully voice acted and having a branching story line).
If this is still a grinder with harsh death penalties, I'll just wait on SW:TOR. I am starting to subconsciously filter out RPGs that aren't developed in the United States (or at least have the main creative brains in the US). Tired of Asian grindfests, sandboxes that are basically just lazy tripe, etc.

I'm fairly certain SE might pull through with FFXIV. All they have to do is fix the combat/UI, and forced group grinding sections. They had the immersion, world, art, and story nailed in FFXI. From what I've seen so far, FFXIV just might improve on FFXI a lot.

I can't find the exact quote, but they did say the models for male Miq and female Roe were finished.
It was in response to a question about whether or not they would be in the game.

I got to be honest, I hated Final Fantasy XI. Everything being a damn time sink, all of it boring to an extreme and inconvenience to facilitate socializing.
Which worked, because every server is like a small town. All end-game players who all know each other, because no one else could stand the game.
I'm pretty jaded at this point with anything that comes out of the Asian mmo market.
Something tells me Square-Enix has no intention of deviating from the stale formula of the Japanese RPG.
