Fortress sieges slow down would need to be fixed before I would consider coming back to Aion. That and the fact that I was being taxed on my subscription which brought it up the monthly cost to around 17 dollars..

The problem with the double XP weekends and hurrying players to the level cap is once 50 there's still nothing to do. Only two instances with longish lockout timers means people look elsewhere for their game time. many servers are getting vastly imbalanced on one side or the other leading to the downtrodden faction to have players leave in droves. Some reroll on a different server, many just leave not wanting to grind another character. I stuck it out in Aion for 5 months, lack of anything to do at 50 chased me away. If 1.9 ever gets to the western servers I might come back again, but if it takes too long there might not be anything left to go back to.

The double exp, lodas amulet and, rest exp buff (forget the name) should pretty much be the normal exp earning rate IMO. As many have said there isn't a whole lot to do at endgame so if you want to keep playing you are probably going to level some alts. The grind in doing that past lvl 30 is pretty big so there isn't much incentive.

I'm merely passing time in Aion now until something like Diablo III or Blade and Soul comes out. Or I'll switch to a PS3 for a while.

I would give this a try if there were a free trial but have heard too many negative comments about it to buy before I try .

The whole problem with the Visions trailer is that while it looked freaking awesome the devs have since said that it's all stuff that they would like to get into the game... eventually. So not only do they have no idea when any of it will happen, they don't even know IF any of it will happen.

This to me is a bait-and-switch tactic, and pure false advertising. I am very glad that I didn't fall for it and resub to the game when Visions was first shown. If I had, I'd be royally peeved these days.

Exactly, NCSoft promised a lot of stuff that just doesn't seem to get realized, plus their completely incompetent support staff... no surprise people don't stick around after a month (or two).

your retrospective of the first six months of aion really ignores the disappointment that most of the gaming community feels about the game. to me, the story of the first six months goes like this: people join aion and love the first 20 levels or so. it's beautiful and a welcome change from WoW. there's pvp and flying!

but when facing the ridiculously enormous leveling grind that begins in the late 20s -- there are no double xp weekends, and lodas amulets are limited -- most people quit by the early 30s if not earlier. flying, you learn, cannot be sustained for a minute (without aid), so the pleasure from that is diminished. for those who play now, the game no longer seems at all fun, especially after many of your friends stop playing. the abyss becomes increasingly more empty, and there's very little to do.

if there is any message from the first six months of the game it's that the ability to progress a character towards endgame by grinding isn't something that the western MMO market desires. the first six months of this game is also an example of how working within a top-down multinational bureaucracy like the NCSoft/NCSoft West is unable to respond to the needs and complaints of its audience; their leadership needed to be more nimble.

In other words, it's still a terrible game.

The game launched September 22nd, 2009, not in November.

Nitpickin,' I know, but true nonetheless. :)

always fascinated by MMO realeases with "harsh" level curves. Every beta I have been in, a few people point out (whine?) about the XP needs, but are drowned by those who shout loudest, the ones who say "no, it's not too tough/should be tough" bla bla, and that is what devs go after. After release, it is a different audience though and then suddenly things have to change. introducing double XP is just a sign of desperation and admitting that something is wrong.

I probably wouldn't have an issue with grinding if it didn't feel like I need to be compensating for the developer's lack of content; truth be told, going in circles in a single area of a zone because you have two-three levels to go before unlocking another few quests isn't my idea of a well-rounded game.

No wonder bots are so prevalent, you basically are told that botting is the easier way to go through grinding because there's no alternative. Asian-style MMOs may very well be all about grinding, and us lazy Westerners just can't cope, but in this market I can't see how anyone thought that wouldn't hinder the game's popularity in the West.

I played for 2 months at launch and then dropped out, I resubbed in mid-February and quickly realized not much had changed (except they fixed the major crashing issue in crowded areas/fortress fights).

Seems to me NCsoft has been all talk and no action for the first 6 months of Aion in the West, nothing was added, none of the grind/XP issues were addressed beyond instituting double-XP weekends, and that "Vision" trailer was nothing but smoke & mirrors.

Nothing has changed since launch. Its pretty lame when you have to add xp bonuses instead of just fixing the grind.

Personally I thoroughly enjoy Aion. I've currently got a 45-Gladiator, 41-Templar, 35-Sorc, 31-Cleric and 30-Spirit Master.

I think a lot of people have lost sight of the fact that most mmo's are vastly more broken at launch than Aion was, no mmo releases an abundance of new content at launch - in fact most spend the same period Aion's been out trying to get the game quality to the same level Aion is already at.

The next significant patch 1.9 is close to launch now and makes a sweeping array of changes to address almost every common complaint - it promises better xp-yield, cheaper costs and a more fair economy, and plenty more quests and repeatable quests.

And with another significant content patch coming later this year - I'd urge anyone not to dismiss Aion quite yet. Give it a few months and try it for yourself.

The Biggest bad thing about Aion is the pvp mechanic, it is simply poorly thought out.

Most rifters are bad news for Aion, as i have stated, they have cost the Aion community thousands of players, and its nothing to be proud of. The rifters (gankers) will tout their skill, abilities, knowing how to attack, being able to take down entire groups of folks, and laughing and defending one another on the Aion forums as "dont blame us for playing the game the way it was designed", all the while attacking and hunting in exclusive areas 10 levels or lower, because they know in the abyss or higher level areas the ap gain will be much much slower.

That aside the broken part of pvp is this, locations have level limits and Gankers exploit this, yes i said exploit, to remain almost totally safe and still have a great area to farm ap points for their armor.

They do not level and remain 1 to 3 levels under the rift portal cap so they dont go over their cap and get locked out of the hunting areas where they kill players exclusively 10 levels or more under them.

I went to the general forums thread a few days ago and the game is very top heavy with rifters and very few if any new folks, this causes the "we dont level gankers" to whine about no prey and the few folks getting stomped over and over to post quit threads or try to chastise the gankers, which doesnt work, as the banded bunch of kids will support one another and "try" to make the forum poster look bad, stating this is the way the game was intended to be played, anything to justify their safe ganking play and easy ap point gain by not leveling past the rift level limit.

why else would a person do this other than to be able to roll as many players as fast as possible? This too has been stated in the forums by rifters explaining where to go to get the fastest kills.

With a game that has enough folks for one server, a pvp mechanic that has cost the title thousands, and a rampant rabid small group of folks ruining the game for the few new folks left by exploiting easy ap gain does anyone wonder why this title is failing?

The majority of rifters are a cancer to Aion, poorly thought out pvp game mechanics allow exploitation and easy ap, and drive away subs. When faced with the reality the rifters might have to fight folks their level or higher or equipped with uber killing gear they quit because the ap gain isnt flowing like it was.

Pass on Aion, it isnt worth the time or frustration and hopefully we will see better titles out there made by people with actual brains.

Another long winded rant about (gasp) PVP in PVP game.

The retort is always the same: Why don't you get some friends and fight back?

@DrewIW:

Or people can do what the rational response is: go play a game that doesn't allow this type of anti-social and non-fun ganking to happen.

It's a design flaw in the game. Players don't tend to tolerate it now that they have games where they don't have to tolerate it anymore. In the long run, every game that supports this type of "gameplay" does poorly in the market compared to games that don't.

This game is junk the first 20 levels where fun but like you always see with this type of games the grind did hit many in the face and force PVP and near to noting of endgame after 6 month this did not change patch's that are not out yet do not count I can not trust NCSoft after they "Visions trailer"

well, I am talking about MMOs in general, not just Aion; although asian style ones are even more extreme of course.
Just take some of the higher names MMOs: AoC, LOTRO, WoW..... (Wow maybe not in beta, but anyway).
