Oh good grief.

Even as one of the people who quite likes viewer 2, I don't think this is going to end well. Most advanced users hate it... the color scheme is too low contrast, half the options we need have disappeared ("Build" button, this means you), the lack of textual labels on the right hand side (I've been using it for a month, and still get confused)...

Upside; can toast marshmallows on flames...

You've mentioned this before, I think. I recall pointing out that SL has had numerous graphical upgrades in the last few years.

Interesting to see that the official download page for v2.0 states "It is spyware free."

I guess we'll know if it works in a couple of months if the user retention rate improves. My guess is that it will, if only because anything would be better than the 10% they are currently at.

And the folks at the Ill Clan were involved in producing this, and they always do quality work.

KirstenLee Cinquetti has been making a modified version of the 2.0 viewer that fixes a lot of the things people are complaining about. It is still a work in progress, but you can get it from here: http://kirstenleecinquetti.blogspot.com/
(Download spot on the right, look for S20(12))

Changes include:

* Deferred render options added to preferences (i.e. shadows)
* Larger chat bar
* Added buttons back to bottom tray
* Transparency to windows
* Added build to context menu
* Added about land button, grid coordinates, and parcel restrictions as options to location bar.
* Sidebar windows do not squish perspective view. Sidebar tabs moved to button on bottom and hidable.
* Add Worn tab to inventory, and inventory button for floating old style inventory window.

Never mind the UI, never mind the bugs, search is broken in viewer 2. An early thing people are going to want to do is search, this viewer is not ready to come out of beta whilst search is in its current state. Land sales search is totally broken, events isn't much better.

Setting deadlines is all fine and dandy but search is the cornerstone of SL, it is not right to make this the default viewer with search in such a state.

If SL residents had to pay L$1 every time they searched then the search function in viewer 2.0 would work better. But that would not fly, there is no precedent, suddenly implementing a micro fee per search would cause too much complaining among the masses as well as merchants. Besides, all you have to do is bork the search function and drag your feet about fixing it long enough to train consumers to go to XStreet to search for goods. Once they get used to that they will stop complaining so much about in-world search, and merchants still sell their products, and Linden gets a fee. It's a beautiful thing a monopoly.
