Is the Force so strong with BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic that it may accomplish what many MMORPGs promise yet could not do: to come out on a console as well as the PC? According to an internal Xbox 360 release list procured by VG247, TOR is listed as one of the upcoming titles (with a release date of "TBC-2011") for the 360.
While several MMORPG developers state that a console version of their title is in the works for a future release (and in many cases, fail to realize it), BioWare certainly has an exceptional track record of bringing their past RPGs to both PC and consoles, including the first Knights of the Old Republic and their recent Mass Effect 2. Speculation about a possible console version of TOR has run rampant since the game's announcement. Back in 2008, EA's Frank Gibeau hinted at it saying, "We're definitely looking at the opportunity to bring the MMO experience to console, without question."
True or not, a console presence for TOR would definitely be a great boon for EA, and an opportunity to grasp a larger share of the subscriber market.
[Thanks Sharuk!]
UPDATE: Sean Dahlberg on the TOR forums said today that TOR is currently being made for PC only: "Star Wars: The Old Republic is currently being developed for the personal computer (PC) using the Microsoft® Windows® operating system. While we recognize that there are other operating systems and platforms available for games today, our development is specific to the personal computer using the Windows operating system at this time."

The Docs over at BioWare have really started to talk about the quality of the PS3 publicly. But if anyone can pull it off it will be BioWare since they have the XP down with consoles. If they do actually release this on a console then I can see them making that 2 million projection in unit sales or subscriptions. But as we all now it is not going on consoles.

I'm LOL at how easy it is to get you people worked up. It has already been confirmed on the TOR forums that the game is being developed for PC only, not any console.
Oh and BTW, I'm in my 30s and I play on the PC and on a console. I also know others in their 30s that play on consoles. So calling console players kids is just stupid and shows how ignorant you are.

Console MMO's! *gasp* What an idea! Who would have thought...

I'd have preferred it on console, it might have actually pushed Bioware into changing things up a little or at least introducing an element of skill extending beyond figuring out your spell rotation and boss scripts, and avoiding weird looking shit on the ground. Instead it looks so far like we'll be looking at the standard action bar setup that got old 5 years ago already. I'm not surprised though, cause lets face it, most console players wouldn't be a great source of subscription fees - they're too busy actually having fun.
Not that I'm saying Bioware won't do some amazing things with this release. I don't have enough information on it to make that call. But at the very least, a 360 confirmation would probably have meant I'd be playing it on a HDTV from a comfy sofa in a years time, rather than from my dull old desk. It's a shame really.

That's absurd.
How would releasing on consoles push Bioware to do something beyond the usual MMO fare? Why would this push not be possible on a PC-only release?

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be possible on a PC only release. It
should be possible, but from the (admittedly basic) information we've
had on TOR so far it doesn't look like they've taken that opportunity.
Most console players simply wouldn't enjoy the "usual MMO fare" we've
seen in every major release since 2005, so in order for an MMO to
actually bring in subs from that demographic developers would have to
do something different - which could in turn actually change things up
here in PC land too. And as far as I'm concerned, right now? Any
change would be for the better.

You know what, BioWare saying they want to reach 2 million subs doesn't seem so crazy anymore... ;P
I'd love this on the PS3.

PC Gaming snobbery aside, we've seen this ritual before. I doubt anything will come of it.

OMG NO NO NO! NO MMO ON CONSOLE! I AM ARE COMPUTERZ ONLY!
QFT. "OMG you have to Dumb it down!" Ya know, both the PS3 and the 360 have multiple USB ports, easily plugging in a keyboard or mouse if you so require.
Also, Anyone remember the Radtastic logitech Keyboard PS2 controllers that came out around the time of FFXI and EQOA and such? Bring those back and the mouse can go bye bye!
I don't care if my graphics look a little worse than a PC, the reason I want a console MMO is for having my version being 100% Developed and crafted for MY machine. I want my lag to by my ISP's fault, I don't want to take 2342342 hours to log in.
Also, honestly, most of the "mmos" that are rumored to come to the 360 are more action oriented anyway, making it a better thing for a controller anyway tbh. The only one that I've heard more mainstream standard of an MMO would be the oft-rumored LOTRO, but yeah, didn't happen, did it?
if you want to get into the console market, you might have to put a bit more in than the normal game.
Say you put out TOR on the 360, bundle it with a keyboard controller and sell it for $100 USD, but include 60 days time free instead of the standard 30, meaning it "really" cost about $85, which is pretty standard for Consoles games with peripherals (think Guitar Hero)
Would people buy it? Yes.

I don't know if anyone has pointed out yet Microsofts feet dragging on allowing developers to readily patch the game as easily and quickly as a PC while on a 360. Really, that is a huge thing that is holding back MMO's for consoles.
I'm no fan of the idea of bringing the MMO to such a wider player base. While things like the Natal and Move just seem like horrible ideas for people that do have consoles and use them for other games (RTS and FPS's on my PC, sandbox and exclusives on my 360).
