what about NPC helpers ala guildwars as option 3? considering guild leves practically scream guildwars as inspiration (instanced zone all to yourself/your group), i see no reason why there shouldn't be NPC escort missions for solo players. I don't think there would be a choice in which class to take with you like guildwars has, but I could see a mission like "Leeroy Jones has a wolf problem on his farm, meet him there and solve his problem". It allows you to take on more epic tasks if you are AI assisted.

"There aren't a whole lot of lower-level players still playing the game, truth be told -- as many people have pointed out, the lower game is pretty thin these days."

While you are correct at present, this is not going to be as true as we move towards December with its level 99 cap shift. A lot of existing players (who don't have their Maats Caps) have leveled their subjobs only to 37 and in some cases 40 (for some odd level capped BC). This will open up at the very least the 37-49 range for some decent play. Toss in the fact that level sync parties make up the vast majority of lower level groups and this will make things a lot more balanced.

As for only being able to level in the newer areas... Well level sync groups allow the use of all existing camps for extended periods of time. As someone levels, you can sync with the lowest xp person in the group allowing camps to last much longer. A lot of current camps are designed for VT mob chaining. With them rebalancing classes for endgame content as well as rethinking the level up system, we may see a change back towards older school play with WS>Burst rather than chain pulling. SE has obviously seen this in XI and is adjusting XIVs gameplay to make sure this is not the case.

The alpha testing has not started yet. A message on the beta site forums from the developers states that they are having issues getting the client software running properly, and that it is the cause for the delay. They did release the minimum specs for the alpha testing, and they are fairly reasonable. file size starts at ~10 gigs. It's been a few weeks since the developers released that message, so hopefully they'll have things on track soon.
