I am all for more mature content. Let it get bloody, vulgur, sexy etc etc. Now I dont want any of the mentioned to replace good story telling but I like my action scenes to look more like Conan the barbarian, bravehart, and 300 then I do looking like the might morphin power rangers (ie no blood and the bad guys take a spinning dive. Also nudity and sexuality in games does not bother me at all. As an adult I enjoy veiwing said things from time to time. I think the key is to not force said things on people but have it there as an option like dragon age origins did.

I really do not enjoy playing MMO's with kids. Its probbaly just an age gap thing. I think there should be MMOs for adults since the majority of us are adults. I dont have a kid but if I did I would play and supervise them playing a kid MMO like Lego's Universe or something.

But please gaming companies make more MMOs suited for adults.

I'm all for it. I always thought it sucked when (then) Verant "nerfed" the Dark Elf quest in EQ1 where you were supposed to assassinate a woman before she gave birth (thereby killing her AND the unborn baby). Dark Elves are evil. Deal with it. :D

More Adult Content. It is far more immersive and I do quite enjoy darker stories. Age of Conan was quite enjoyable for it. Hopefully the Sevret World shows similar maturity

I am all for it... Mature it up, I am the 18+ year old paying by credit card to play the blasted thing. On the other hand though sadly most of the 18+ year old mature audience is likely worse of a player than the 12+ year old who cant tank with the best of them. Just my 2 cents.... Bring on the MMO pron. =]

Not a big fan of mature content in any of its current implementations, but I do see potential.

Pit falls:

a] Lowering maturity of storytelling e.g. coasting along on quest-givers being buxom ladies, 'sexing' solutions to problems & rewards in lieu of actual gameplay & itemization, general hazard of making NPCs sociopathic misogynists and thus impossible to care about.

b] Lowering maturity of community - yes it can get lower; slapping blood & breasts over advertising is a sure way to attract the least mature gamers going, and 'mature' game design goes hand in hand with equipping those players with the tools to reduce the enjoyment of others e.g. non-consensual majority, anatomically correct nudity + jiggly dancing emotes.
You get a nicer community - and less crazed children - sticking "family friendly" on a product than you do sticking "XXX Mature - Adults Only!"; I think we all know what keeps franchises like Saw afloat, and it ain't audience maturity.

c] Gore done wrong; to be frank, gaming gore hasn't evolved that much since Mortal Kombat - it very seldom has an immersion advancing effect.
Even multi-million selling Bioware-produced Dragon Age - with production values dwarfing most MMOs - has chunks of flesh literally exploding out of foes in ways that would make Lui Kang roll his eyes, and the FPS genre is built on avatars whose heads explode & bodies ragdoll like marionettes if they're shot with a handgun or freakin' laser for goodness sake!

So overall; I'd like one game of such overwhelming 'maturity' (twitchy free-for-all permadeath porn-meets-torture-porn) that it hoovers up all the undesirables from the MMO marketplace, then for a few actually mature options with story telling, suspense & realistic gore.

Agreed, Vulturion.

Most "mature content" isn't -- it's just more blood, and the promise of "bewbs", as a sales gimmick.

The last time I can recall seeing legitimate "mature content" was the lovemaking scene in the first Mass Effect. And when I describe it as a lovemaking scene, I'm being generous, because the scene was so short, and so non-scandalous (two shadowy bare butts for what, three seconds?) as to hardly warrant the title.

And yet look how Bioware got crucified for that scene in the media ...

The scene made sense; it grew out of the story; it tied up the game's love story -- but the media saw the possibility of happy sex occurring somewhere in game-story-land and went rabidly insane with outrage.

So, ME 2 now has fully-clothed love scenes, scenes which seem absurd given the otherwise direct and dark tone of that game's compelling story.

Mature content would be a welcome addition to our range of game storytelling options, but that's not what the M rating actually sells these days.

I'm all for adult content under the following circumstances: (1) if it means that the game's sellers and the server administrators will actually go to the trouble of keeping children out, I'm all for it just on those grounds; and (2) if it's actual adult content, and not sniggering teen content, that is to say if it portrays adult subject matter in ways that actual adults actually act instead of some over-inflated and improbable pornotopia, if it's a plausible part of the story and not something stuck in there for shock value or for laughs, I'm all in favor of it. Break either guideline and your game is beneath my contempt.

Man, I miss Neocron 1 sometimes.

I'm for it if it is handled in a mature fashion - which it rarely is.

I would like to see more games aimed at the 'adult' player. Sadly it seems a tough thing to do well. There were elements of The Witcher that made the world darker, gritter and more interesting, but then you had the cards to collect for everyone you slept with, which just seemed ill-judged.

Age of Conan never really impressed me, and whilst the combat was bloody and dynamic I didn't feel the adult content went far beyond that.

So yes, more adult content please, but who is going to do fund that when it instantly limits the market potential? Tough call. Brave publishers and developers required.

Mature content is neither here nor there. It doesn't make a game fun. It does allow exploration of more adult topics, but people aren't always up for meditations on genocide, rape, or slavery in their games.

Sadly, when people say "mature content," all too often that really means puerile content. Rather than adult themes, we get in-the-face sex and violence. Arterial blood spurts and topless female avatars. Back when Age of Conan's marketing campaign seemed to be "Hey, we've got decapitation and boobs!" it repulsed me from trying the game.

The things associated with a "mature" audience are bad for creativity. It doesn't take much creative effort to design monsters that look disgusting with blood flying everywhere, sprinkled with expletives and nudity .These types of games are best at providing social shock instead of imaginative settings. There may exist such a game which is also sufficiently creative in terms of gameplay, but I don't think such a thing exists currently. The simple test for such a lame game is just to imagine it without all the "adults only" elements and come to a conclusion about whether or not it would still be fun. Most of these types of games lack additional gameplay elements that would keep it fun in this case.

As a "mature" (read: old) gamer I think it is gimmicky and a bit manipulative to add that content to games. If you look at 99.999% of it it's merely an extra boob or flying lung meant to do no nothing more than shock. We are kidding ourselves if we think this is adding more "mature" story lines and themes to a game where we are killing orcs to get better armor.

Mature content is aimed at the most immature of us.

I'd be OK with mature content if it meant morally questionable activities or other things on the edge, things like smuggling contraband or other "normally" illegal activities: kidnapping, drugs, drinking, stealing items ... having the choice to do quests along those lines, or not. I'm not OK with mature content if it *literally* just means boobs and gore.

Daggerfall, the second Elder Scrolls game, had some bare-breasted female characters - a few witches' covens, a few harem girls, a few prostitutes - but the game didn't splash them on the cover as a selling point, and, in fact, it was quite likely that you could beat the entire game without ever seeing one. They were taken out for Morrowind and Oblivion.

Mass Effect 1's romance scenes had what I thought was pretty tame nudity - the sort of close-cropped/side- or rear-only view that's been commonplace in Hollywood for as long as I've been alive, but, again, that's gone in the sequel - hell, they didn't even make enough video clip to see Tali's face, and that was one of like four factors that led to me having my character pursue that relationship.

I don't agree with the remarks that "it could get worse," in terms of games being advertised solely on the basis of boobs and blood, because, honestly, it just can't. There have been small-studio or porn-industry funded erotic games for a long time - Virtual Valerie? Vixen? I don't remember the name, but I remember seeing "VV" on every list of warez in the 90s - and sexually explicit text-only adventure games before there were even sprite graphics games. And as far as major studios making bad decisions to appeal to prurient interests, have any of you people even walked past a store with a Dead or Alive game in it? Bixies, humanoid bees in EverQuest 2, have breasts. They're insects, with chitin and a thorax and everything, but they're modeled to have breasts. Cortana, a massless, textureless hologram, had breasts. Mass Effect 2 has female characters with cleavage-baring uniforms in depressurized space or toxic atmospheres.

How can it get worse?

It sure is poison for subscriber numbers, but more mature content - of course! As long as it serves a purpose and makes the game more interesting.
One of the few things that made Conan kinda interesting.

Breasts - no big deal. Tame nudity - again - no big deal. As long as the game is clearly labeled. play what you like. It doesn't make or break a game for me. As a parent, I don't mind, my older teenage kids are okay with it.

Blood - no big deal. We see it on TV.

Violence - again we see it on TV and we are off killing mobs in games already.

Sex - if explicit then it should be optional. I know some people think they need it in game. I don't. It wouldn't keep me from a game like Dragon Age or Mass Effect. But it wouldn't compel me to buy it either.

But if its torture (like Manhunter), you can keep it. It doesn't interest me. I personally don't think that it drives the story. It won't attract me to the game. In fact I wouldn't but it.
