If you've been waiting for a hearty fix of Steampunk in your gaming life, Remnants of Skystone may have what you crave. After a couple years of development and testing by Flipline Studios, this quirky 2D browser MMO just launched on Kongregate, and so far, it's looking solid.
Players can choose between three classes: the steam-shooting Aeronauts, the blade-wielding Ferric or the whip-lashing Crags. Character creation is simple and painless, with a decent if not overwhelming selection of visual options. After that point, players enter this unique world full of Victorian gadgets and fashion to fight an alien threat that has taken over the world.
Remnants of Skystone may come in a small package, but offers several of the same features as its MMO brethren. The game utilizes shared instance space for players to meet and group up for missions, which then take place in a 2D action-platform environment. In their downtime between battling baddies, characters can work on their floating house, build up collections and further customize their outfits.
The combination of Steampunk trappings and a pretty cool setup -- survivors who live in the sky while attempting to retake the ground below -- gives Remnants of Skystone a one-up on many of the other browser MMOs out there. There's even a starter guide on its official wiki. See if it's to your liking over on Kongregate!

Looks kind of neat. I've been waiting for a decent steampunk offering ever since Gatheryn tanked. I love the art style.

Plays like most flash games of the type that I've played. But it's free for now, so I'll give it a shot.

It's good to see that massively.com took the time to cover a small production like RS. I've been playing it for a few days now and love the style of gameplay and the beautiful artwork that make up most of the landscape. For those that don't know, Remnants of skystone plays a lot like the old school Castlevania games but with modern flashbased graphics. If you enjoyed those games as much as I did when I was a kid you'll definitely appreciate remnants of skystone.
