I was not interested in Alganon for anything other than the recent entertainment value... at least until Dr. Smart, super-genius, mentioned battle-hamsters. Hmmmm.... maybe I will give the free trial/f2p/whateva a whirl after the April re-launch.

I'm glad that they atleast now admit the game is a wow rip-off, im still pissed off from when david allen replied to my question on massivley's 10 community questions on the game being called a rip-off and he blandly said "i've heard no one call this game a wow rip-off".

Why won't he stop mentioning the previous developers over and over?

Anyways, he's clearly a poor developer (been at it a long time and doesn't even have a critical success, let alone a commercial one) trying to salvage a poor game. He doesn't deserve the attention he's getting.

"Yes. When the investors brought me in last year to assess the situation, the first thought that crossed my mind was that here was a WoW clone, charging triple-A prices and being released in the busiest time of the year."

Triple-A titles cost $15 a month and $40 Box Prices. Alganon cost $10 a month and $20 box with a month free.

"Since David had already released the game prematurely on Dec 1st and with near disastrous results, I pointed out that the barrier of entry was too high. So I had them drop the price of the client, create a trial version and to cancel all subscriptions going forward."

Ummm, the price of the client and the box was reduced on Dec 1st launch, sooooo, that kind of means he lying about when you were brought into the folds which makes him more culpable for the games state of terribleness or... he is lying about telling them to drop the prices.

/) Link to forum post discussing the price cuts dated... Dec. 1st 2009 (the games launch date)

According to himself "I was brought on board by the majority investors in QOL since late December to "help" David and the team move the game and company forward."

Derek Smart Time Traveler! That makes all of his statements pretty much suspect. Not that they weren't already.

@ Darzin

Dude, I don't know what your problem is and why you insist on posting the things that you do. So now that you've been banned from Alganon forums, you're taking this vendetta on the road? Don't you have better things to do with your time and energy?

First of all, Dave Allen contacted me in late Nov 2009.

The price of the game client was already set at $39.99, the subscriptions were there etc. In fact they were selling pre-orders at that price as well.

In late Nov we had the discussion with the investors. I gave them my recommendations as to what I have already stated in all three interviews that I have done. This recommendation was free and was done as a favor to Dave. Nobody had hired me at that point.

As part of my recommendation, the game launched on Dec 1st at the lower price but still had a subscription.

I was officially brought on board in late December. Then again in late January my involvement was expanded when I was made president.

Those are the facts and you can't twist them.

Um...so you fired the dude that got you into the company? Nice...

So you did recommend the game launch on Dec. 1st but you are taking none of the blame for it launching on Dec. 1st... those are the facts. Your statements are still entirely contradictory:

Take for instance something like this:

"As part of my recommendation, the game launched on Dec 1st at the lower price but still had a subscription."

Here it is a recommendation, in this statement:

"Since David HAD ALREADY released the game prematurely on Dec 1st and with near disastrous results, I pointed out that the barrier of entry was too high. So I had them drop the price of the client, create a trial version and to cancel all subscriptions going forward."

Include this as well:

"As a game developer, I know all too well that if your game is not finished and you release it, thats just asking for trouble."

So did you:

1) Recommend the price reduction and launch date

2) Or did you reduce the price after the disastrous launch on Dec. 1st that was entirely David Allen's fault?

Those two statements are not cohesive. In one you recommend it in the other David Allen is a monster who kills puppies and charges too much for shitty games. (Yet, on Dec. 1st the price was reduced.)

Neither are the following:

"I was brought on board by the majority investors in QOL since late December to "help" David and the team move the game and company forward. He wanted to continue doing his own thing, didn't recognize my authority (even after I was made President and him demoted to COO) etc."

"As things went on, they made me President -- with David's signed approval -- in late January."

So either he was demoted and was an ass about it, or he accepted it like a man.

Or how about these gems:

"First of all, Dave Allen contacted me in late Nov 2009."

"I came on board first in Nov 2009 when he called me up talk to his investors, since I had more experience and credibility that he did. Then during those talks the investors decided that they trusted me more than they did David and so said that they weren't inclined to put any more money into the company without my involvement."

"If you take money from investors, at the very least, TELL THEM what you're doing with their money and the asset they've burned millions on. "

"When the investors brought me in last year to assess the situation, the first thought that crossed my mind was that here was a WoW clone, charging triple-A prices and being released in the busiest time of the year."

So either, the investors brought you in to advise David Allen, or David Allen brought you in to help himself.

Either David Allen launched the game on Dec. 1st at the high price point and you had it reduced. Or you recommended prior to Dec. 1st that it be reduced.

You thought the game was just a bad WoW clone and that "you guys NEVER FINISHED THE GAME" , or you thought "The game - in my opinion - is not a bad game at all."

Either David Allen lied to you:

"He flat out lied to me when we were talking about COLLABORATING in order to bring my games to a NETWORK because I didn't want to build my own. He said you guys had tech that you clearly DID NOT HAVE."

or David Allen simply asked you to talk to the investors for him:

"In late Nov we had the discussion with the investors. I gave them my recommendations as to what I have already stated in all three interviews that I have done. This recommendation was free and was done as a favor to Dave."

I am just curious which of your stories is the real one, the one makes David Allen into a puppy killing monster, or the one where he produced a game, you helped secure funding for and recommended a launch date and price point, or is it some other story?

@ Utakata

If only it were that simple.

First, he didn't "get me into the company". I knew who Dave Allen was as per the industry, but we never had any dealings before Nov 2009. So its not like I owned him anything or that I was bound by any sort of premise that would see me doing things that I wasn't supposed to and on his behalf. I'm my own person.

Second, its not like I was out looking for work. I own my own company, have my own games etc. He came to me looking for my help. Then the investors came to me looking for my expertise and experience. It really is that simple. There is no conspiracy here.

Finally, my involvement has nothing to do with David Allen but with QOL which is owned by several investors. What happened to David as per performance and his subsequent departure is no different than what happens at companies on a daily basis regardless of who gets to push the button.

Well...it does read a bit contradicatory to what you originally stated:

http://www.alganon.com/forums/index.php?/topic/4607-quest-online-announces-leadership-change/page__p__39830&#entry39830

"1. Dave Allen didn't "depart". I fired him back in February for insubordination and for acting against the best interests of the company, the LLC investors (who I represent), the game and the team."

...it appears you had a direct role in the matter. But in fariness I don't really know the goings on in any gaming corporate culture. So I can't comment on whether you where the messenger with your hands tied behind your back, or where fully complicit in the decision or something in between. The rest of your reply, I'll just have to take your word for it for now. But either way, thank you for taking the time to clarify your position, Mr. Smart...

...and good luck with your game!

Mr Smart, I like the cut of your Gib. But, Alganon still blows rancid goats balls. No amount of tinkering is going to fix that turkey. A flawed concept is still going to be flawed after you change the interface to something less 'WoW'ish to something a little less 'WoW'ish. You and I both know that.

As a genuine question Mr Smart, and I do appreciate your candor, is it more that you've come onboard to generate some interest and, dare I say it - Hype, in order to sell a few more box units to recoup as much investor money as you can before the inevitable unplugging of the servers? Which is also why there is no ongoing sub fee, its all about the non-returnable, non-chargebackable box sales as quick as possible? Given that Alganons player numbers are woefully abysmal and its name and reputation is tarnished beyond recovery.

As a former Beta Tester who went into Beta with an open mind only to be insulted by being forced to re-level my WoW L80 Warrior all over again, exactly, what can you do to induce me to lay out my hard earned cash? What is going to be better than that abortion I experienced late last year?

The Alganon launch was a disaster, and people see it as yet another crappy WoW wannabe. So regardless of what the original people in charge intended, they clearly did a crappy job of implementing whatever they had initially set out to do.

It is certain that new leadership was needed, though at this point it is unclear if the game is even salvageable. If or not Derek Smart is the right person for this job remains to be seen.

It is correct that MMO gamers, in general, have long memories when it comes to bad launches. Example: Many people won't even go back and touch Vanguard with a ten foot pole even though SoE has improved it greatly since it's crappy launch.

@ Dread

Given the vehemence of your disposition, it is highly unlikely that anything I say will change your mind, so I am not going to try to do that. If at some point in the future you want to check it out again, by all means go ahead and do so. But until then I don't feel that my even trying to convince you to come and check out the game is worth it.

@ Rialle

Indeed - and perception is everything.

The investors, the QOL team and the gamers who play it already know my well voiced stance on things. I'm not a miracle worker and I haven't made any promises or warranties to anyone. My goal is to steer the team and manage the company until the game is finished, fixed, released etc in order to have a clear picture of what it is we need to do.

The game - in my opinion - is not a bad game at all. It is a pretty good and niche game that had a bad start. While it may or may not survive, the idea is to give it our best shot. If I didn't think that the game had a chance, I wouldn't be involved in this at all.

Bear in mind also that QOL is a small company and with a small team (less than 30), so our overhead is a lot smaller than most MMO companies. For that reason we can go a long way - for as long as the investors are willing to fund the company - before we even begin to think of giving up on Alganon.

So we will continue to move forward and see where that leads.

I posted a challenge to Derek Smart over on the Gamasutra site, I will do the same here.

So I propose a challenge. Lets have an interview. You banned me from your forums for asking a simple question, directly to you. So lets see what you have to say. Interview via e-mail, back and forth answers. I will post all of the answers here and on massively for the entire world to see.

You can CC all your answers and all my questions to whomever you wish. But, it is a no-holds barred interview.

Oh my god... i remember mr Smart when he banned me from the forums just by asking why in the world his game doesnt work on my system. Ofcourse a "fuck you" was very common from his mouth. Specialy to 14 old kids who just need some answers.

That is rich,Derek Smart says he will deliver ? His track record shows otherwise. Even trashing his own games ,as if he came back to his senses and started doing good games.

How arrogant... "come back in April?" well Mr. Smart ,please increase your speed of bullshit to the WARP FACTOR FUCK YOU.

Your experience is based on 3rd grade products... flawed by design, failed to deliver what you promised and i could go on for entire pages of it all.But i'll spare you the embarrassment. God forbid you would take it on another Coca-Cola vending machines (lol...he knows what im talking about).

You putt your foot down and now it will be ok? that's rich, coming from a person who was regarded a laughing stock thru all known space (even Gammulans laughed at you...yes,you heard me).

I have nothing but contempt for this guy.I tried hard liking his concept of his games, but ultimately my dreams were flushed down a toilette. Nice REPUTATION,Derek (btw in our language Derek without an E - DREK - means SHIT.What a coincidence! excuse me,but after getting a FUCK YOU NOOB from him just by asking a question when i was 14 ,i think he needs a taste of his own medicine)

In this age of internet pseudo-anonymity, it's difficult to read a great deal into submitted comments without questioning the motives of their source. How many of those expressing displeasure and/ore personal ire towards Derek are actual victims of his wrath? Were they deserving? Is Derek really a nice guy in real life and generally a straight-shooter that comes across badly when the medium is text-only (as some have stated elsewhere)? Has he polarized those exposed to him (recently or in the distant past) to a degree that the only choices are love or hate and no middle ground is achievable?

While the entertainment factor of both interview and comments is gratifying, however perverse its roots may be, it's hard to dig down into the raw truth of it all without omniscience or participation in a jury of peers during the lawsuits that will spawn at some point from it all.

Personally, I've followed Derek's progress since the earliest days (because I was really excited about the Battlecruiser games way back when), and he's always elicited this kind of response. I can't help but compare him to Jack Tramiel, Commodore's CEO back in the day. He was heavy-handed, didn't pull punches, made sweeping decisions, and pulled off some amazing things... but he had quite the plethora of enemies. Steve Jobs is similar in some ways as well, most likely because he was also from that era and picked up on a lot of Jack's good and bad habits. I liken such men to being the ultimate catalyst, and they can be a boon or curse according to the situation, but they're always handy to have around when people get too complacent or are ready to settle for minimal effort. It's obvious to me that the investors for this project saw Derek as the Heavy Hand that needed to be brought in to help salvage things, and that's one of the things that Derek does well.

I say the world needs more of 'em. Just try to have a community manager proofread their public responses in advance and maybe reign them in once in a while. ;)

The world needs more people who are passionate -- we don't need more people who produce subpar games in a niche market and claim to be great developers. We don't need more people who yell at everyone and everybody for criticizing them when they deserve it. We don't need more people who would rather deflect facts with blame.

If Derek Smart wishes to clear the air, I have offered him a chance. I don't think he wants to, because then we might all realize how culpable he is for this mess.

Really this whole Derek this Derek that crap is just getting old. Yeah I am not a fan of the guy but I still have some respect for him. He is trying to help the guys and gals at QoL to finish the game, something that David was not able to do.

And get it offical launced along with getting the team on track and get as much wow crap out of it. If you really talked to some of the devs, they would tell that they did not like the wow look but in these hard times a paycheck is a paycheck. And if you boss tells you to do something, you have not a lot of choices.

Posting to "challenge" the man??? come on are we in kindergarden. It would appear so.

Let the guys and gals at QoL finsh the game and if it fails so be it. At least give them the chance.

More vitriol from Derek. More blaming others for his failures.

From a related post:

he claimed that Take 2 released the game (BattleCruiser 3000) unfinished in 1996, and this was the reason for the fiasco of its release (voted one of the dumbest moments in gaming, and quite possible receiving the worst review of a major release in computer gaming history). While it is true in a 'literal' sense that Take 2 released it unfinished, what Derek does NOT tell you is that he
claimed, for about 6 months, that the reason for the disaster was that they released the 'wrong' version, and that he had a fully playable version on his server. Of course, this was quickly exposed as the first of many, many falsehoods that Derek promulgated onto the community. The fact of the matter was, that Derek, just like David Allen, promised for years that 'almost there almost there almost there' until finally, fed up with his inability to meet a production schedule, Take 2 released the steaming pile to the public. And Derek asked fans not to return the game, to be patient, that the 'wrong version' was released, that the 'manual is ready, just going through some final changes, will be out in a month', etc etc ad nauseum, and that the only way to save his reputation (though most would argue he failed) was to work tirelessly - for years - patching and fixing the game.
