In a recent GDC 2010 interview with UGO, BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka said of Warhammer Online, "Right now it's [a] really profitable business unit within my group." Muzyka went on to say they've actually seen more people come into the game since enacting the free-to-play model on the game's earlier levels, and that he personally felt they were working.
In fact, by the sounds of it, Warhammer Online is due for some interesting announcements in the future. Another of Muzyka's comments on the title was, "We have new content planned and all kinds of cool expansions for it." We don't know how much more clear cut a message can be than that. And hey, it's good news! We're looking forward to our playable Skaven and Lizardmen, Mythic and BioWare.

Huh? Bioware?

Mythic falls under the umbrella of Bioware's management now, with people from both companies work on each other's products as needed as I understand it.

Totally forgot Bioware is part of EA now. I thought the biggies like Mythic and Bioware stayed more or less independent (housed separately, kept their employees, etc...)
The quote from Muyzka kind of implies WAR is somehow under his jurisdiction, which is surprising.
Bioware taking over WAR would sure be interesting.
Anyway, I'm happy to see some good news for WAR. I still regard it as the best MMO since WoW (when it was released), but some unfortunate design mistakes really got in the way of its fun and success. Hopefully they're continue to iron out the kinks and take advantage of this 2nd chance they're getting...

breezer, read http://www.massively.com/2009/06/24/mythics-mark-jacobs-leaves-ea/ for the story of last June's reorganization which saw BioWare's Ray Muzyka put in charge of Mythic within the EA structure.
You're right that the big studios stay more or less independent.. as long as they continue to be successful. High profile failures like WAR lead to high profile firings and loss of independence.

BioWare/Mythic are now a conjoined twin at EA with a shared head.
It's actually good to see some good news for WAR, though I disagree with the guy's appraisal of the game, the fact it's making them money bodes well for it's future development.

was surprised to see Bioware's name on it too. Mostly because Warhammer doesn't match the quality that Bioware is usually known for.

Hopefully by new content they mean taking T4 and throwing it completely out the window, and starting over the endgame from scratch.
I would come back in a heartbeat if they could actually make open world PvP interesting like in early levels, and give me a reason to not have to do the stupid scenarios to farm renown.

I agree somewhat. I think Scenarios are what have really held WAR back but they backed themselves into a corner by making them the game's #1 feature and selling point. They draw people into the game with scenarios, they've let players develop a play style that revolves around scenarios...
So they were in a situation right off the bat that was like, they can't afford to get rid of scenarios and they can't afford to keep them.
At least they finally acknowledged a few of the scenarios were designed incredibly poorly, and are taking them out of the game (more or less). That's a good start. But I think WAR will always be the world's biggest, most expensive multiplayer lobby until they set drastically higher limitations on the accessibility and rewards of scenarios.

Glad to hear good news about WAR. The playerbase was getting really worried and talking about maintenance mode for a while now since there hasn't been any kind of info about the game for a while now.
It's great to know that the game is profitable to EA/Bioware/Mythic and there expansions planned.
I suggest to release an horizontal expansion (with no level cap increase) that shifts the focus of the endgame for rank30+ players from the Tier4 campaign to other areas unrelated to the campaign system. And please for the love of god expand the crafting system to the creation of something worthwhile.
At the same time, rescind your contract with GOA in Europe.
If Bioware shows a minimal interest in giving their touch to WAR, the game can pick back up a bit.
However, i would LOVE to see Bioware making a single player RPG based on Warhammer Fantasy.

Dr. Ray took over mythic long ago after Mark Jacobs was fired. This isn't news. When was it? Last summer? Last spring?
They've even had mythic employees doing some work on TOR.

I know I for one am really glad to hear good things coming from Mythic. Warhammer has a lot of things going for it and I always really enjoyed the style and mood of the game.

I thought that Mythic took that over recently.
Maybe that was just DAOC?
