Although VanaFest 2010 is moving into the memories (fond or otherwise) of Final Fantasy XI fans everywhere, there are still bits and pieces that remained unanswered questions. For instance, what exactly are the prized Chocobo Berets going to do when players get their hands on them? Thanks to Corinth on the popular fan translation site JP Button, we finally have our answer: they turn players into chocobos. Using the hat turns everyone in the party into an egg which, when hatched (by removing the buff), will temporarily turn a player into an adolescent chocobo that improves their movement speed somewhat. High time to start making friends with attendees or trivia contest winners for that.
The translated information also points to the hats being available with the March version update, which looks to be going live on March 23rd. The VanaFest site has a full breakdown of what's due with the update, but in short it's set to include the penultimate parts of the Wings of the Goddess storyline, job adjustments, and the long-awaited Odin and Alexander summon spells. It's also introducing the new "Trial of the Magians" quests. so the end of the month promises to be very busy for Final Fantasy XI -- even if you're not waiting to hatch from a hat-induced egg.

Does anyone know when the servers getting ready to be merged will be open again to new characters? I just bought FFXI, and I have several friends on Lakshmi, however since it's merging I cannot create a character there.

Just a question i used to play FFXI years ago and it was a game that got me hooked to MMO's thinking about going back and starting all over so the question is how easy is it to group now and also how populated the servers are these days also how hard is it to start all over these days will i be stuck just waiting for the parties or are you able now to solo some of the content.

Generally speaking, finding parties at lower levels is more difficult. However with the announcement that the level cap is increasing, there should be a boon to the always tedious 37-50 range. They have also made improvements to soloing in the form of an hourly quest called "Fields of Valor" which rewards you with experience, gil and "tabs" for completing a list of monster families killed in the particular area. Tabs grant additional status buffs and other benefits like instant transportation to your home nation. At level 60, you can now participate in "Campaign Battle" in the newer (Past) wings of the goddess areas. This rewards you with good chunks of exp and other rewards, and can be used to effectively solo to 75, albeit a little slower than a party would. It can also net you some decent, free gear sets for various jobs, not the best gear, but quite good. Server populations are still holding fairly well, and after the version update mergers, they should be quite healthy. Some of the higher populated servers are reopening to transfers as well.
