"the free-for-all zone known as the Abyss"

Say what? The Abyss is not a free-for-all zone, faction limits apply.

Trying to sound enthusiastic for such an uninspiring failure of a game. I feel sorry for this guy :P

I wonder if there are enough people left playing to fuel massive battles, otherwise the Abyss must be pretty darn boring.

As a card-carrying PVE'er.. I was really looking forward to AION until I learned of it's PVP nature and focus. It's a pretty game, but pretty much not for me. I can accept that though.. I mean nothing is all things to all people.

Just means more Guildwars / STO / DDO time

Aion is definitely not for the pvers. I'm a mix of pvp/pve (like the setup style of Warhammer and DAoC type) and this game was to much for me.

Wonderful looking game, not gonna be for pvers. It's also way to much a grind.

"Is it possible that a carebear can learn the ways of the gank and become a PVPer like his father?"

Wait till you hit lvl 35 young Padawan, you'll learn the ways of the grind. At level 40 the hardcore grind starts and when you hit lvl 50 guess what? Grind,Grind,Grind.

I hit 40 on my main last night. It is more of a grind than your average game, but still enjoyable for some folks. It really boils down to who you're playing with (and against).

I could of hit 40 last night, but due to the fact Elyos on the Zikel server are dicks, they completely shut down the 2 main Asmodian XP areas in Morheim MM, and LC. You just got ganked by heavily PvP geared players on your way to them. Honestly, it's not fun to have that happen, infact it ruins the game for alot of people and NCsoft would be wise to put some sort of limits on that sort of crap because it almost made me cancel my subscription as this is the upteenth time this has happend on our server.

As someone who'd rather cut off her own arms than deal with psychotics pvpers, I felt it was just better to not even bother with Aion (or Allods, or Darkfall, etc) rather than just try them and hope there'd be a niche for me. :p

Aion is very carebear PvP friendly. Go do fortress raids where you have hundreds of other players with you, so what you do means almost nothing since nobody is likely to pick you out of a crowd.

If you join for PvP, you're stuck grinding out levels and doing repeatables for equipment.

If you join for PvE, you get uninteresting instances that you run 20-30 times hoping for items with 1% drop rates to appear.

Aion's just a time-waster. Great if you absolutely must kill time and want to do it in an MMO, but not worth it if you're looking for something to engage your brain.

Apparently you fail to read your own Aion forums and are also smoking some reality altering drug, hundreds? You are high, or just daft or maybe you just remember that first month when the pop went from 300k to 3k or so folks scattered amongst the servers. Even with alts at primetime the highest server pop can barely push 500 folks.

Devs were TOLD in alpha, beta, friends, and family testing, that ganking would kill the game, and it did, coupled with grinding and a sad random crafting subset. No one ever listens, Now you have a failed game, nuff said.

Hope they put that patch out before mar 28th. NCSoft, you still havent contacted me about my ideas, whats the deal? (maniacal laughter)

@Graill: How the hell can you say Aion has become a failed game? Where were you this weekend for double XP? I couldnt bloody move anywhere without lagging, due to the massive amount of players online. And even today postdoublexp day, it was busy as hell.

Great game and great article. I'm glad that now I've just hit the 40 mark, I'll be able to sufficiently defend myself when it comes to rifters and questing through the abyss!

I just want to say that I'm really glad that Massively is finally covering Aion. The article really hits the nail! Aion is really a niche game...and its surprising that more folks aren't giving it praise in a day and age when everyone is complaining about WoW clones. Aion's blend is truly unique...if you enjoy pvp...you really deserve it to yourself to try it out! There's nothing quite like jumping off a mountain ledge...swooping down on your enemy...catching them unawares! Or battling to defend your fort...as the enemy pound on its gates...only for a Balaur dropship to arrive...unleashing attacks on both sides! ^_^

I was bored the moment I logged in and realised that despite the lick of paint it was still just about pushing your buttons in the right order and avoiding anything out of place on the ground. You know, a lot like WoW. Which may be why Aion isn't garnering any praise from the people complaining about "WoW clones", because it is one.

If you're enjoying it though, all power to you. Performing the same repetitive action over and over again when there are much better games out there with a degree of excitement to them (Borderlands, Mass Effect 2) isn't my idea of a fun evening, but I guess so long as at least some people keep on lapping up the time sink style of play then companies will keep on throwing it out there to make those subscription fees look halfway justified.

After 6 months of the west release and 1.5 years in Asia, NCSoft is so desperate to keep this failboat afloat that they started paying reviews on several MMO sites, this ione is just one of them. I remember they did exactly the same with Tabula Rasa in the last 3 months before pulling the plug. You know they use the same tested business practices. I think the next 3 months will be the decisive months (patch 1.9 will be released) and NCSoft will evaluate after that if to close Aion in the west or keep it afloat.
Servers are mostly empty now and on the estimates of the players (read the numerous population count threads) the entire population in the west (NA/EU) is bellow 200.000 scattered on 24 servers.
All the "glorious battles" the OP is talking about were happening maybe 4-5 months ago, now the servers are to empty to even imagine that.
Aion is in desperate need of server merges and a speeding of development for 1.9 not paid reviews on MMO sites.
