The official site for Final Fantasy XIV follows several Square-Enix site traditions, by being designed entirely in Flash and having an obnoxiously slow update schedule. Thankfully, an official update has just hit the site, both in the form of several new screenshots (including the lovely in-game shot seen above) and more solid ability information about several of the game's disciplines. Much of it mirrors what we'd seen in early leaks from Japanese magazines, but the abilities and spells of each class shed more light on how the game will play.
Conjurers are apparently going to play similar to Scholars, with both traditional black and white magic spells in their arsenal, as well as unique tricks such as being able to cast while moving. Thaumaturges, meanwhile, inherit several Dark Knight draining/sacrificing abilities along with several status ailments. And those are just the two casting professions -- each of the five physical damage professions seem poised for a wide variety of ability combinations, along with a heavy emphasis on position. The beta information for Final Fantasy XIV still seems to be restricted, but the game is already looking intruiging for both fans of the series and general MMO players.

i'm starting to wonder if they are going to try to do something like guildwars where you pick X number of skills for your mission that you have trained through your weapons, the mages spells just are so random even with only 5 listed, either that or quickbars upon quickbars just like ffxi, which isn't really catering to the casuals like most current mmos are going for.

Very interesting to see an in-game shot include the UI, seems like a rarity for a developer to ever put out anything other then a cranked up perfect shot with no UI.
The "thurmatage" sp? sounds very much like Vanguard's bloodmage, and I think that's a good thing.
The little bit I've heard about FFXIII is that you can change up your party in combat, makes me think that changing "classes" or weapons will happen in XIV. Just guessing but it seems like it will be a very different game from FFXI, which is exciting to me and I'm sure worrisome to XI fans...

"The two here are just not enough to maintain a group with given the abilities shown and quite honestly, not enough caster types to make a lot of the old school magic user mmo players happy. The classes are a pretty far cry from what the traditional FFXI or even tradition FF roles have always been. I like them but I still want my tradition somewhere. Give me my pure White Mage and my pure Black Mage class in addition to the Scholar/Shaman hybrid and the Dark Knight/Shadow Priest hybrid."
You know, it's because the traditional FF(XI) roles have always been flawed, and this is something SE is attempting to fix with XIV. Either grouping will always be a pain in the ass (have fun being a pure DD unique snowflake and standing in whitegate because you won't get a party for ages), or grouping will actually be fun, efficient and casual (not in "easy" casual way, but in "doesn't take ages to do" casual) and in exchange your class has many roles to fulfill.
If different races and not being able to jump bugs you guys, I'd suggest reconsidering your priorities when it comes to the game. There are million opinions for every million individuals about this game, and you know what; SE ain't going to satisfy you all. Instead of being "upset" about not being able to dye your fingernails or something as severe, why not like the game for what it is, and not what it isn't? It could have been another Aion for god's sake. The whining is dumb.
