The official site for Final Fantasy XIV follows several Square-Enix site traditions, by being designed entirely in Flash and having an obnoxiously slow update schedule. Thankfully, an official update has just hit the site, both in the form of several new screenshots (including the lovely in-game shot seen above) and more solid ability information about several of the game's disciplines. Much of it mirrors what we'd seen in early leaks from Japanese magazines, but the abilities and spells of each class shed more light on how the game will play.
Conjurers are apparently going to play similar to Scholars, with both traditional black and white magic spells in their arsenal, as well as unique tricks such as being able to cast while moving. Thaumaturges, meanwhile, inherit several Dark Knight draining/sacrificing abilities along with several status ailments. And those are just the two casting professions -- each of the five physical damage professions seem poised for a wide variety of ability combinations, along with a heavy emphasis on position. The beta information for Final Fantasy XIV still seems to be restricted, but the game is already looking intruiging for both fans of the series and general MMO players.

The site was updated... Look in the Disciplines section. Only two caster "classes" set so far. Hopefully we will see at least another 2-3 before the game gets a release.
The two here are just not enough to maintain a group with given the abilities shown and quite honestly, not enough caster types to make a lot of the old school magic user mmo players happy. The classes are a pretty far cry from what the traditional FFXI or even tradition FF roles have always been. I like them but I still want my tradition somewhere. Give me my pure White Mage and my pure Black Mage class in addition to the Scholar/Shaman hybrid and the Dark Knight/Shadow Priest hybrid.
Toss in that a lot of us former 6+ year XI players are expecting some system of "subjob" advancement that has here-to-fore not been discussed. I can't wait for April 1st to see whats what. (If I manage to get a beta/alpha invite). So much to see and do.

I agree with this, that's really bugged me so far. Won't keep me from playing, but bugs me, just like not being able to jump in the game bugs me.

Theres plenty of other races they coulda used in the FF universe honestly that would a been awesome.. recycling the old races is kinda of a downer since it shows a lack of imagination or something that shows that this is going to be different from the other FF mmo. In the end it really doesn't matter since game play will be the defining judge even if it does look like FF-11 2.0.

@Jersey
I really wish they had male/female counterparts of the old single sex races. I like the fact they have the old races.
I am so excited for this game, I would say much more than SWTOR but maybe that's because SWTOR isn't coming out till next year.

I was happy about this game until I realized, I had an over all bad time with FFXI and; the only time Square Enix wants to give anything to PC gamers is a pay to play (like that sorry Final Fantasy XI). I might pass on this game altogether.

You seem to be forgetting The Last Remnant was released for pc and was the best version out of the 3.
FF7 and 8 were also ported to the PC

I guess it's a good thing Bioware has plenty of time to pretty up the chat interface for you seeing how their MMO won't be out until Spring 2011 at the earliest.
I remember when I used to get my hopes up for MMOs... oh the memories.
*glares at boxes of Warhammer Online and Age of Conan*
*sigh*
