Recently we spotted an interesting post from Bill Roper, Design Director for Cryptic Studios' MMO Champions Online. On his Facebook page he showed a slightly blurry picture of a developers booth with the simple caption "GDC 2010: The developers of our Facebook Game." Sure enough you can now play a Mafia Wars style Facebook game while wearing your tightest spandex! It runs in your browser and hooks up to your Facebook account so that you can choose to announce level ups and achievements. You can also invite friends to form a superteam, customize your secret base and even attack other players.
Developer Lolapps claims to have "over 40 million active users per month, and has the largest network of social games and applications on Facebook." It looks like they know what they are doing, so it is definitely worth a look. Head over now, make your hero and get to stopping crime!

Oh goody. After a brief break, Massively is "all Cryptic all the time" again.

Is it just me or has GDC seen a landslide of Facebook games coming out of the woodwork?
Predictable maybe, but I can't help but wonder if it will negatively impact the current games, right now it feels like a "jump on the bandwagon fast before the next trend hits" is going on.

God... what is with the obsession with Facebook? Seriously...

The obsession with Facebook stems from the fact that Facebook games are growing faster and faster and have some of the most players anyone has seen. They are not meant to replace your MMO, though. Think of them as a version of your MMO that you can play while stuck in line at the DMV, or while waiting for food to come at the diner!
It might or might not be just a trend, but the numbers are showing the beginning of some new kind of delivery of your entertainment, and as some new area to expand your game into. It will all come to head, however, as technology allows these games to play more like a traditional MMO.

The facebook game probably already has more players then active players remaining in CO and STO combined.

Yawn. How utterly boring.
Facebook aside, I never understood what is so attractive with this type of "game" - I tried Mafia Wars (clones) on iPhone and also tested this *quickly*, all you do is click with 0 interaction.... and no, I don't want to give it a chance by playing longer if it turns me off in the first 2 minutes.
If one wants to critisize the button mashing of mmos as in "press 1, 2, 3, pause, 1, 2, 3, etc etc" then this is the ultimate one - you don't even have to press a button.....
Why can't these pseudo rpgs at least be a bit more "old-school" like as in Bard's Tale or Might and Magic?
Oh, right, I forgot, old-timers don't use or at least don't play in FB.......
