EVE Online developer CCP Games has announced a partnership with Epic Games China that will bring Unreal Engine 3 technology to their forthcoming console MMOFPS known as Dust 514. Set in the same universe as their successful PC MMORPG, Dust 514 is a console-only title that will enable players to interact with EVE pilots as they battle for control of New Eden's resource-rich planets.
"The dynamic large-scale battlefields of DUST 514 presented an interesting challenge for us," said Hilmar Petursson, CEO of CCP. "We determined Unreal Engine 3 to be the perfect solution because its tremendous flexibility allows us to easily integrate new technology and produce stunning results."

It will eventually come out on PC. The fact that CCP will have to push updates through microsoft, and sonys console pipeline will stifle the ultimate vision CCP has for their IP.
Its very difficult to iterate and patch through the consoles aggressively. In order for it to work (which a game of this nature will require no doubt), it will probably require monetized DLC updates to support and in my opinion, its going to get really hairy. Currently, the way that market is, you're NEVER going to have meaningful platform to platform interaction (even though the unreal engine out of the box, can EASILY have them each talk and play together, its really a publishing, competition, and marketing thing that prevents it from ever happening, not tech). Its probably just going to be values in a database that get passed through to one another on the servers like once a day, and maps and stuff that you can, and can't attack will change based on those values. Thats probably it.
In order for DUST to ever reach its full realization, it will have to be on PC unabated.
Unreal engine is an interesting choice.... They're going to have a LOOTTT of work ahead of them as far as the networking layer goes, which unreal has practically none of.

u mad?
I'm looking forward to DUST and even though I started off whining about the lack of PC version, I understand why they're going for the consoles (easier development model, DLC, people who are used to buying games etc) and I think it's a good choice - this will be my personal "tipping point", and I'll buy a console when DUST comes out.

Just another old codger chiming in with disappointment regarding the console only aspect of the game.
Now, don't get all crazy on me here but when you've been playing a certain type of game a certain type of way for 20 years it kinda gets hard to switch to something else. By that I mean I played Catacombs and Wolfenstein 3D (that's the old version not this new fangled Wolfenstein that came out last year) with a keyboard and a mouse.
For the same reason I don't play platformers on a PC I also don't play shooters on a console. This doesn't mean I hate consoles or the players of them.
Simple formula, if a game can trace its roots to Mario Bros then I play it on a console. If it can trace its roots to Wolfenstein 3D then I play it on a PC.

This is where Eve traces its roots back to:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8266017.stm
A massively single offline game from 1984 which I played on a computer with a memory of 32k and which took 5 minutes to load from a cassette that you kept having to stop and rewind because of a read error.
As another old codger, I am constantly amazed by how good games have become.

I can see both sides of the arguement about the PC or consoles. As for the PC - console interaction, I don't know how well it was implemented but shadowrun allowed 360 and PC players to play on the same server. The problem arises i guess with PS3 - 360 or possibly PS3 - PC. I am quite keen to see how this pans out. Another reason Im interested is to get my flatmate into the EVE universe, he is dubious about EVE online but DUST would probably get him involved on the ground pounding front
