Amidst all this GDC 2010 news is a great one-day-only sale over at Amazon, where you can pick up Star Trek Online at the low-low price of $27.99. If the mood strikes you, there's also a one-day sale on the collector's edition. While the CE may still be $47.99 it's a good deal cheaper than the regular cost of $79.99 and it comes with a bunch of in-game items, too.
Whatever you end up deciding, the sale just goes to show that a patient gamer can save a lot of money in the end. Of course, missing out on five weeks of boldly venturing out into space may not be worth the wait, for some.
[Thanks, Jason!]

Once it goes to less than $20, I'll give the game a shot, I think.

Muhahaha, would not play this crap even if someone would pay me for it. I play MMOs since the famous Meridian 59 and STO beta was the worst experience in mmo-gaming I've ever ever ever had. If I'd ever imagined a game that's built without any love, I would come out with something like STO. Shame on you, Cryptic.

The biggest mistake Cryptic made was letting so many people into closed beta. Frankly, the game in the last days of open beta was massively improved from the game as it was in closed beta; you'd hardly recognize it.
If I had based my opinion on my beta experience of games, the only game I would have ever bought was WoW ... and I would have certainly missed out on many great gems, especially LotTO. Thankfully, I'm not that closed minded.

I'v seen the game in closed beta status and in open beta status and in my opinion it has nothing in common with the series, it shows no love to the fans. It's just Champions with ships, that's all. I really had never so much no-fun in any MMO. I was really looking forward to STO, really, but what Cryptic made of it is nothing worth playing, it's just as simple as that. Surely some people will enjoy this game, but me - I wouldn't give a penny for it.
This game doesn't deserve the name Star Trek, that's for sure.

"Space Box Online"
My first impression was that everything, i mean EVERY CHOICE was geared towards battle.
My second impression came from the fact everyone RAN EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME. Talk about losing the atmosphere of Trek! To make matters worse, everyone was running around with guns the size of leaf-blowers and chain-saws.
My third impression was from seeing all these "captains" gathered around the npc vendors looking up like baby birds as they selected some small design change to their ships. NOT something I would expect to see in any Star Trek movie or television series.
Why do people complain? It's because Star Trek is an important part of our pop-culture, and we don't like to see it done badly. It's like seeing a Darth Vader figure at a comic or gaming convention who is done badly. You want to tell 'em "go home and get it right next time." but unfortunately, Cryptic defends their decisions just like George W. Bush defended the Iraq war.

STO is a great game if you want to run the same 6 missions over and over and over again for the 3 weeks it takes to hit max level.
Or you could try 'crafting'

I was a OB/head start player but not too bothered about the drop in price tbh. I thought the game was disappointing but still not too bad if you try not to think what it could have been with more development time and a different design philosophy - as someone else said as a stand alone game its not too bad and has potentialâ„¢...! :)
I still bought the lifetime subscription (because I clearly have more money than sense!) and am giving it a bit of a break until it has improved and has more content etc - everyone knows MMOs are long term projects not single player RPGs and as long as content and improvements are made in the coming months I can see me playing it long term.
I was never really fussed about ship interiors as everyone else was, but now I'm hoping that Cryptic will find time to play Mass Effect 2 like I did and learn a few lessons about the space navigation and the benefits of not only having ship interiors and crew, but actually having a meaningful use for those interiors and crew and how it approves the immersion factor of a game!
However the one thing that really cant be changed is the one thing that is most disappointing about this MMO - instancing!
