German game-maker Bigpoint has just announced its forthcoming MMORPG based on the SyFy Channel's popular Battlestar Galactica reimagining. The company, owned in part by NBC Universal which also owns SyFy and consequently the Galactica brand, plans on releasing the game later this year. Bigpoint representatives broke the news at GDC today.
"We believe in the value of IP, and the second thing we believe in is cross-platform," said Bigpoint CCO Nils-Holger Henning. Hit the link to read the full write-up courtesy of Gamasutra's Christian Nutt.
Stay tuned to Massively this week as we'll have an interview with Bigpoint and more details as GDC rolls on.

They are using the Unity Engine. It will be web based. I will approach it with an open mind until I see what the gameplay is like...

Awww... Shoot. I got so excited but browser based is a huge turn off.
And my hopes that a game will be able to atract me by having an artistic feeling similar to BSG are over after Black Prophecy went the f2p route.
I guess this game could work if it was a reimagining that had nothing to do with the TV series. Like a new version of "this happened before and will happen again". And a version were a humongous number of Battlestars escaped from the Cylons.
Or maybe an MMO that takes place in the first Cylon War.

This makes me furious!
An Incredible IP being wasted because Universal wants a higher profit margin.
I hope they decide to let a real gaming company make this game.

I was a fan of the series - well, at least the first couple seasons - but when I started reading this article, just through - meh. But this bit, 'the second thing we believe in is cross-platform,' really got me excited. Here's (probably naively) hoping they mean PC & Mac rather than PC & console.

At first, I was excited when I saw this. I love the IP and in the right hands think you could get something pretty great out of it.
But then I read further.... Out THIS year? How do you make a quality MMO that fast?? Oh... Browser-based, multiple references to the IPhone, and references to no downloads and consoles
nevermind, I now have zero-interest...

As a BSG fan, it's hard to be anything but pessimistic about this.

They must have been working on it a hell of a long time already if they're aiming to release this year. Also: Original Flavour BSG was miiiiiilless better. *runs and hides*
