Things are liable to get busy in the Tales of Fantasy community, because starting on March 10th the upcoming free-to-play MMO will be entering its alpha phase. IGG has already invited established guilds to jump into the Alpha and have at it, but will be sweetening the deal with copious rewards, too.
The actual reward is 2,000 Platinum given to the winning guild as well as special gift packages for each individual guild member. What's interesting is that these rewards are for the eventual closed beta, making them all slightly less permanent. Of course, we're pretty certain that most people will be pleased enough with getting into the alpha test to begin with. And really, that's a lot of in-game money to throw around. What do you want to bet guild leaders are already considering keeping it all to themselves?

Is anyone else as tired of high fantasy as I am?

This will be my first time responding to this complaint that I read over, and over again. About 10 years ago you had a point but now it's just silly. There are many non-fantasy options for MMO's actually have been for a while now.
But thats really not even the point. There are things called genres, people have differing tastes. Someone that loved fantasy 30 yrs ago might still love fantasy now. It would be horrible if they stopped progressing in the fantasy mmo genre. I know you didn't call for them to stop being made though.
I love it all personaly, I want all types of MMO's to keep being made and improved upon. But we actually need another good PVE fantasy MMO because I have nothing to play right now haha. I don't like WoW's style, Vanguard would be perfect if it wasn't on life support.. I hope Heros of Telara or 38 Studios Copernicus project will save me.
And with all that said, I could give a toss about this title, I will never invest any time in a F2P ever again. =P

The problem is most of those non-fantasy settings are just superficial settings. They're still fantasy at the core. Mana bars being called energy, melée still being a strong means of combat, etc, etc. There are very few MMOs that attempt to use different settings as opposedto just glossing the same thing with a coat of paint.

You are talking about gameplay/mechanics. I am talking setting/lore. I don't care if the bar is mana or energy, if it's a sci-fi world it's a sci-fi game. You sound like one of the many that are expecting mmorpg's to become somthing completly different. Thats what mmorpgs are, multi-player worlds with a UI, abilities and resources to manage, ect.. It's a type of gameplay, these are rpg's.
So you are saying EvE is fantasy because it's rpg-ish?

I know absolutely NOTHING about the content of this game, but the MMO name "Tales Of Fantasy" fills me with undiluted antipathy.
That title is only going to be topped by someone releasing "Wizards Of Magic" or "Warriors Of War"...

I'm not counting them out.
I am hoping that one day someone is going to decide to take some big chances on the main designs of an MMO and we are all going to be blown away.
It will happen.
I'm not expecting anything like that from a big gaming company (I am sure they all want WoW clones) but maybe someone from a small market will take a chance.
In each case, I'm giving them a shot. Not going to count them out just on what setting they choose.

Is it too early to ask if the game is any good? lol

If they're inviting outside guilds in then it's beta, not alpha. Alpha testing is done within the development team, beta testing is done by outsiders. That's the whole point of the distinction between alpha and beta tests.
As for the game, there are now way more MMOs than the market can support in the long term, fantasy or otherwise. Competition is always a good thing but a flooded market of Korean cutesy or WoW clones isn't doing anyone any favours, what people want is a handful of MMOs that actually offer something different from each other.

meh...when are we going to see real innovation in mmos...im getting sick of the same stuff over and over again

Innovation is probably 5 years off tbh..
I don't see anyone REALLY going for innovation until WoW starts to decline in numbers. They've plateaued over the last couple years, but if subs start to drop, people will research and find out why, and offer THAT to the people..
Its kinda like Hotels...You're going to have a Bed, a TV with HBO or showtime, a Shower, with little bars of soap and shampoo. you're going to have 2 undersized towels, 2 washrags, and a Bible in the chest of drawers.
Why? Because someone had a really successful hotel a long time ago, and everyone emulated it. Until someone comes up with a better idea that catches on, you're just kinda stuck with it.
