LOTRO is still my favorite MMO on the market. You just can't beat it for story telling capability or community. Landroval especially. Although I'm not an RPer, I still played Landroval because of how great the community was. The only reason I'm not playing it now is because I have a short attention span for MMOs and switch often.

My only complaints about the game were the LFG mechanism and the tendency to cater to solo players. /LFF is useless. The social panel is equally useless. About the only way to actually find a group is /GLFF. I don't hate solo players, I just don't like it when high level group content is altered to fit the needs of solo players.

I wouldn't recommend monster play. The PvP is not very compelling. Stick to PvE.

Funny timing on this article!

For a whole lot of reasons mentioned here, I've canceled my WoW subscription and will be going back to LOTRO next week.

Yeah, I know I'll end up going back to WoW eventually, but it's nice to take a break and have the change of pace LOTRO officers.

I've just Leveled my Warden to 65, 99% solo and had a ball just coming and going to the game casually. An hour here, two hours there. Yes I skipped a lot of the higher end content, raids, epic story lines which was fair enough as I really wasn't putting time into being online for the time needed to do the epic/raid stuff. I dinged 50 the night Mirkwood went live, literally 3 minutes before the servers went down and still have about half of Mirkwood still to do.

There is not a single other MMO out there that is as casual friendly. You can be your group leveling, epic raiding nazi - the game caters for that 'hardcore raider' mode. But it also caters for those of us with limited time or just like to swing by for shorter more infrequent sessions.

Crafting is pretty good, but not too much different from most MMO's.

Personally, I wish Fishing was more like WoW's fishing in that you need to level fishing by catching different fish in different zones.

The biggest gripe some people have with the game is that the PvP is pretty bland BUT we all know that LotRO is NOT a PvP game and that the Moors was really just 'tacked on' to give a small taste of PvP to those who need it. I've never bothered going to the Moors, not even for a looksee. If I want PvP I'll jump into WAR RvR and Scenario's or maybe even WoW's BG's.

But something I do love, and it surprised me, was getting my toon all squared away with about 50 songs I downloaded from the Fat Lute and I've enjoyed just sitting outside the Prancing Pony playing a few of my favourite songs. I usually do it while I have some work on the second monitor - dual 22" LCD's ftw ;)

I am definitely working on getting a Lifetime sub....just have to somehow get it passed the missus ;)

This is an excellent article, got the community down right. It's the only game where I ask "Can someone help me grind this quest?" and the answer isn't "I'll help grind your mother lulz!" The gameplay and graphics are some of the best of any MMO and the stability and dedicated company (turbine) make it the best imo.

I'm new to LOTRO, but recently wrote an article about my experiences playing it:

http://tleaves.com/2010/03/02/seasonal-affective-mmo-playing-part-deux/

My summary would be: great game, but it's a real shame about the UI.

Have to agree with Soln and the others on this one. GLFF is a steaming pile. It's the Barrens chat of LotRO. And yeah, finding PUGs sucks. Not always, but there is nothing in LotRO close to what WoW has with the Dungeon Finder. There's no cross server LFG or queuing. Hell, there's no cross-zone or cross-region LFG in LotRO. The LFG tool they have is NOT global! In fact, DDO's LFG tool is way better. And they're by the same company!

And radiance armor (gating mechanic) isn't as bad as it was. But I can personally tell you having run SG now 13 times in the 3 weeks with my kin I am utterly sick of waiting for a 2nd age symbol to drop. And 4 kinnies have left the game (permanently they claim, but who knows).

The legendary item design for this game is FAR worse than any of badge drops in WoW because if your kinship is imploding (like mine of late) then you have to rely on PUGs. And surprisingly, there's fewer people on, and the end-game people are either grinding SG non-stop or grinding skirmishes non-stop.

There's a real lack of vision IMO for this game. Turbine doesn't really communicate their plans. They expect we know we're following the Fellowship, but they conveniently put us on scavenger hunts to places we've done for the last 3 years in the latest book (i.e BK3 latest patch) that have nothing to do with the central story. It's doing like a Star Wars MMO, but instead of following Luke/Leia/Han towards the big battle you have to first go to Corellia to kill some meatlumps and then go to Lok to wait for further orders. Wait, wut? Where are these places? They're not in the movies. Why am I not with the heros of the story? Why am I doing busy work? Should I just go fish? Yeah that's LotRO.

LotRO is pretty but it's getting stale and it won't stand up to WoW2.0 in Nov or SWTOR in the Spring (let alone start of Beta this Summer) if they keep up with these boring patches. Stalling is going to kill the population.

So yeah, nice game but the last 3 patches are a big let down. Last three expansions have been very bland.

Agree with the article wholeheartedly. I only started in LOTRO last August, but it's the best PVE experience I've found in any game. Very immersive setting, quests that are worth reading and a real sense of progression. The graphics are beautiful and the artwork excellent.

I play on the european RP server Laurelin and all players I have met so far are helpful and friendly. I have seen lots of open RP happening in towns and settlements. More importantly, although the built-in LFG tool is overcomplicated and hard to use I have generally found companions to complete group quests by simply asking for help of passerby - done this countless times and it always works! That's a very different community from WoW!

I took the Lifetime option as I wanted a 2nd game to play without the pressure of 'justifying the subscription'. In the end I play LOTRO enough for that but I have taken the odd break where life is too hectic. I prefer that with the obvious build quality of the game to F2P where you are always destined to be spending real cash if you want a decent experience in game.

@Tom

I've a Level 65 Champion in LOTRO, yet I can count on one hand the number of times I've been forced to group. Raid content, certainly, requires a group. And yes, SOME of the Epics require you to group, but Turbine have addressed this for Book 1 and there are still many, many people playing Books 2 and 3, so if you do want to complete those quests, finding a group isn't the slog you might think.

As I say, I enjoyed what I played of GW but I personally became bored very quickly with it and haven't found myself drawn back to it in the same way as LOTRO pulls me in.

I think you and I are playing two different games. SoM is an excellent expansion - there's no grinding, the quests are interesting and the storyline is advancing in a very satisfactory manner.

I also think you're expecting a MOVIE tie-in more akin to EA's adaptations of the movies, not a game-adaptation of the books that include and expand upon the lore of Middle Earth not included in the movies. And to expand your Star Wars analogy, it's more like going to Lok to intercept Imperial plans or destroy the supply-line that's helping with the construction of the Death Star.

Each to their own, but from what I've seen of SWTOR, a lot of people are going to be very disappointed with it. And if Wow 2 is anything like WoW, I think you'll come back to the ''stale'' LOTRO rather quickly based upon Blizzard's previous form.

All I can say is where is the real review.

Solid content. The last year has seen a total droppoff in content.

If your just getting started your out of luck, most folks are at end game.

I think LOTRO has decent graphics, but this is where its appeal ends. There is too much grind involved if you want to not simply level your character to 65, but be competitive in end game, i.e. raiding and PVP: deed grind, gear grind, legendary item grind, legendary relic grind, and now new and improved skirmish grind for scrolls. Outside of the epic quest line, most quests are devoid of meaning and are just another form of grind. In game support is useless. Turbine is releasing very little new unique content, and giving us more repeatable grind instead. As a result, server population is declining.

I can't wait until Guild Wars 2 or Star Wars: Old Republic is released so I can move to an MMO that focuses more on story than grind.

While WoW is the most hated MMO out there, the LOTRO is most praised one for sure. Those game are indeed very similiar, nearly same crafting, same UI, quest tracker, fishing, reputation, AH, mails. Tho no add ons was a big mistake - result waiting 2 years to be able to have a list of friends/alts/kinnies in mail interface. So with awesome graphic, depth story, brilliant IP it should have killed WoW already. But it never came out from niche game for very casual people. Why? It simply lacks WoW gameplay quality. It's hard to explain this in depth in comment, so I won't really bother. But isn't it REALLY weird that such a great game isn't one of the major players out there?

While your list has almost every thing a good mmorpg should have... it is missing one THING, one VERY IMPORTANT (for me atleast) thing... three letters... wait for it..... wait for it

........PVP............

If it wasnt for the fact this game has virtually NO good pvp system, I would in fact jump on it. Yes theres MP, but from what I read on the forums, and correct me if im wrong, its not the same thing as a real pvp, and isnt even really a much thought out or catered to part of the game. I mean you can just start a monster and be 50, and theres really no attachment to character like the freepeoples.

Now if they revamped monster play completely, and expanded it to new regions, maybe tied it in with skirmishes of mirkwood, and gave the monsterplay a PVE portion then it would be awesome.

Wouldnt it be cool to be a servent of the Mordor and go from the orc hatching furnace place and make your way in the world. You could have the forces of sauron PVE area be completely seperate from freepeople, and still have meaning and story, only from the enemies point of view.

The PVP areas would be in moors, skirmishes, or new areas in future game. LOTRO is a story about CONFLICT, an epic saga of good vs evil, just wish you could play the evil guys as a primary character. Oh well one can dream =)

Lacking things in LOTRO:

1. Avatars walk and act like they have a stick in their asses.
2 Animation is simply wrong (hunters shoot at 1 meter distance).
3. No PvP between factions means simple PVE liniair progress and clueless monster play.
4. No decent LFG dungeon finder, big parts of the game are dead through this.
5. No flying, no swimming, no endless open worlds like in WOW.
6. Challenge is still scaled in grinds (attuned), while in WOW they already integrated this in scaled difficulty settings (Raids scaling coupled to gear requirements).
7. Some very low pop servers.

Good things in LOTRO:
1. Fantastaic world graphics.
2. Adventure was there in the early game.
3. It's good it didn't gather the big crowds so it stayed niche for its lovers. I wish WOW stayed that way.

Bottom line: rather bleak and flat mmorpg that still survives at around 100-150K tx to its Lore.
If not for Middle Earth the game would have folded - or turned FTP - like D&DO.
