Somehow...I got a feeling this will come with gold-pressed Cryptic Points requirements attached.

Too little too late. I canceled my sub the other day before it was due to renew. I might go back for a look-see in about 6 months but to be honest I can't see much changing. The game is fundamentally flawed. Space combat is OK, pretty much a carbon copy of the POTBS fight mechanic...but in space rather than the Caribbean. But just like PotBS the mission system, both Space and Ground, are awful. Its the same 4 or 5 mission archetypes over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over ....again. Oh look, Kill 5 *insert bad guy race* fleets...again. Gee, another sweep of the near identical base facility to kill 4 groups of *insert bad guys*. Scan 5 Space Objects, Scan 4 ground objects all in a 100m radius...rinse repeat till Admiral.

Add to that the worst 'crafting', and I use the term lightly, system ever devised in any MMO ever made. Its a complete abortion. Whoever approved that going live needs to be taken out the back and flogged.

But all that, I could put up with. I'm a trekkie from way back and love the IP. But its the constant downtime in Aussie primetime that kills me. I'm lucky to get two nights in a row playing before it goes down AGAIN!

Sorry, can't pay a Premium price for a game you make as difficult as possible to actually play or enjoy. SO back to LotRO for me, might even resub back to WoW for a few weeks, at least their basic features work, every night.

I got a five day buddy key and tried the game out. I lasted several hours. That said, I think the community-centric approach is terrific, but the game itself is so horribly lacking at its core, given what it is (a Star Trek game), that salvaging it into something the target audience will actually pay for is still a year or longer away.

The Metacritic score is 65, which in MMO terms pretty much equates to a failed game that is regulated to a hobbling future of long delayed updates that are always years behind what the competition is offering.

I just wish MMO developers would make fun games, and not exercises aimed at selling a box and possibly a month-or-two of subscription. Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age have far more replayability, with a greater promise of substantial DLC in the near future. And they were targeted heavily at consoles. Why, in the last five years, is Blizzard the only MMO developer skilled and creative enough to offer this to customers?

The MMO genre needs a new paradigm changer. Because all we have are people making slight derivatives of what Blizzard offers, and Blizzard scooping poorly implemented but good ideas from others and making them work. And man am I tired of WoW.

Really? This game is toast. A respec will do nothing to regain or keep players, and a death penalty, again, really?! A respec will do exactly what? let you fix your ingame choice of weapons now that you know what there is, all 4 types?!!!

And a death penalty, what will this do but add more shallowness to an already empty headed game. Or is this to "slow" down progression? Idiot ideas for idiot games.

Anyone that has played this game to RA will find this attempt at a Star Trek franchise a dismal failure, and its laughably easy, even reading and immersing yourself in the detailed..............(ROFL) ok there is no immersion and no Star Trek World of any kind, just walled instances all about circles and lines.

Its dead Jim. just let it die. CBS needs to fire whomever made this trash and if CBS was the ones helping push this garbage single player game in MMO clothing out the door for money then shame on them, poor choices all around.

Congrats, you've just demonstrated by example the exact problem with Cryptic's community.

(Hint: The players have been asking for this for ages. Now that it's been announced, everyone is whining about it.)

STO is not really that bad. In fact I am still enjoying it. I'm just not crazy about the heavy instancing and frequent load screens.

I agree with you. I think its a pretty decent casual MMO. I think the ones crying are the hardcore gamers that like to poopsock; there is no reason for poopsocking with STO.

Things like respecs and death penalties are part of the core design of every MMO game. To think that the entire game is developed without even thinking about how these basic core issues in the game should pan out at launch is just ... incredible to think about.

I mean.. what is the job of a dev if he can't get these things right from the start? Is he gonna wait and see what the players think ? lol... just lol. Bad design - poor developer process. This is a game I will never touch until free trial.

The game went live without respecs because there originally wasn't going to be a cap on the number of skill points you could get.

I personally agree with their decision to add a cap, but it was a last-minute decision and it shows. And not just because of the lack of respecs. The current system was designed around no cap and introducing one created all kinds of issues that need to be looked at.
