Nice write up. EQ2 player from launch here, Befallen Server. But advocating use of the Item Shop gets a strong "Thumbs Down" from me. This is a subscription game and it has a very friendly leveling curve. No need for the Item Shop unless you want appearance items.

Totally understand. I'm not a big fan of the exp potions either (although I love me those appearance armors) but it's an option. Might as well make others aware of the option.

But the leveling so far has been awesome. I haven't been rocking the potions outside of the veteran rewards, and I've been leveling like a fiend. It's been easy, fun, and totally worth the ride.

I love the game. I've tried about 12 others and very few if any have the dept of EQ2. It is vastly underrated. To me it has the richest grouping experience of all the 2nd Generation MMO's. I'm glad this column exists. Along with Sentinel's fate which is a solid expansion I hope more people get involved. I just want to make sure that people know that buying things from the Station Market is completely optional. Nothing there is necessary to suceed in Norrath.

What the man says is true. ^_^ Check out the other alternatives, smash through the timelines, take the golden path, and you won't need to touch a single potion. :D

Ah... There is some good advice in this column. I like EQII. A friend and I got it on a lark last year during one of Steam's sales. I keep signing up, but getting frustrated by the seeming lack of people in my lower level zones. It always seems to feel like I'm playing in a vacuum. Which is a shame because I love so many things about the game. I would imagine that things pick up in higher level zones?

If you'd like to really level up quicker try the RAF system. The mentored person gets 300% and the one mentoring gets 200%.

Just keep the mentored person 1 level below the mains level so you can keep mentoring. Redirect exp to AA if you have to.

Then just follow the quest chains as he mentions here and if you want even faster get the vitality refresh and exp pots on top of it. You'll be at the cap very quickly.

You don't even have to pay for the recruited account as it gives you the 14 day trial up to Kunark and you get the exp buff for just being in the same zone and group as the trial character. I usually just group with em and use the "goto" feature to bring em to my zone while I quest. Paying $14.99 for the trial account to become full and for you to get an extra month is well worth it since you get the mount and some nice stuff(mount is really nice for the characters who don't get major speed buffs) and game time for the same price of a month.

This is the ratwarlock, and I approve of these comments. ;)

Also, so I'm not being totally non-substantive in my reply, I will add:

They have a new development in the works, the "storybook" (it has a different official name which eludes me just now) - which will tie in with the new quest progression initiatives to really bring the questing, lore, zones, and dungeons all together so the player is better immersed and doesn't feel like leveling is just leveling for the sake of getting to the endgame.

I second that. Us EQ2ers are a classy bunch, as happy discussing things on the forum with a pipe, or leafing through a Norrathian atlas by the fireside with a glass of brandy, as actually playing the game. :)

I agree too, I have played several MMOs and no one beats EQ2 in PvE. I might be old school but I love to work hard to get my rewards. I spent 2 nights to finish the To Speak as a Dragon quest, (where you learn the dragon's language) and at the end I felt a sense of accomplishment I have not felt in long time. I love the well written quest lines rich on Lore and eq2 has plenty of them.

I am having a blast in the game!

I am happy to be a eq2er! :)

I've had the game since day one and my highest character just reached level 72. I was trying to get to 80 before the expansion but alas... ah well. Can't say I don't have many regrets other than I have severe alt-itis and my gear is poo.

Yay for EQ2!
