We've just hit the four-month mark from the launch of Alganon, but it turns out that Quest Online has been paying more attention to their business model than was externally apparent. The game is moving from its current subscription-based model to a "subscription free" setup immediately, changing up a number of elements of the game in an effort to stay competitive. As the official announcement takes pains to point out, they have no desire to make the game completely free-to-play, which means that the game will retain its cover price, but there will be no subsequent fee for play.
Similar to Dungeons and Dragons Online, the game will be converted to using an item shop complete with various items, as well as the option to speed up the game's Study system substantially. Customers who have already pre-paid for subscriptions will be given a certain amount of currency for the item shop as a payback, as well as having their accounts given a special "Citizen" status as a show of good faith. The release also sets the game's "official" release as April 8th, an odd move to be certain. Alganon is making some large-scale changes, so take a look at the full press release for more information.

I don't think Alganon was released in any worse state than CO and STO the difference those 2 games have non fantasy settings and have one or two game mechanics that give the illusion of change.Of course I was in closed beta and Open beta for all three and decided not to buy any of them so...

Those two games also had massive PR departments, while Alganon had... I think this is my first time even hearing of the thing. But yeah, super heroes and a giant IP like star trek versus no history generic fantasy.
I agree with others though, playing an MMO is not something that just anybody can get into. It doesn't matter what kind of MMO it is, it's just that MMO's require time, and a lot of people have other things they would rather/must do with their time.
Only a certain subset of society can afford (and many of them can't, all those college kids that drop out from gaming) the opportunity costs of playing an MMO.

Word from the official forums is that on any random evening, there may be between 10 and 30 people online in Alganon.
Yes, between 10 and 30. Not 10 thousand and 30 thousand. 10 and 30.
Based on average relationships between concurrent primetime players and total numbers of players, this would put their subscribed base somewhere in the ballpark of a couple of hundred.
Never has any failure been quite so epic.

Wow. They can't even keep their business model honest.

There's a saying about Karma that springs to mind right about now.....nice to the usual Alganon paid for advertorial masquerading as 'news'....

There's been so much bad press about this game (Most of it deserved) that I'm not surprised to this this happen. They should have known better and started this way.
So, essentially it's the Guild Wars model with a cash shop? (It's been quite awhile since I looked at GW, so I may be offbase).
This brings up an interesting question to me... does this help the argument that some games just arent "good enough" to be sub games. DDO wasnt, this wasnt, how many other MMOs out there would fail if they had a sub.
This seems to me to be a hit on that "F2P games are of just as high quality".
Once you get to a certain level of quality, you kinda wanna go sub model, eh? At least, that seems to be the trend.

The main issue I see is that D&D Online was still a great, polished game for years before it went F2P. Trying to compare D&D going F2P with this stinking piece of shit is just outright fraud.....much like Alganon.

" Many companies approached us about making Alganon F2P, but that's just something we weren't interested in. Right now, the industry standard is to squeeze as much money as they can out of players by introducing cash shops, and forcing them to pay for things that ought to have been part of the game. We don't want to do that. We want Alganon to be a service. You pay us a subscription so we can continue to develop and run a game that you enjoy playing. It's not a product where you hand us money and we hand you a vanity pet, or mount, or epic sword and then walk away. It's an ongoing service where we are here for you. " - Just... LOL! (Taken from an old Q&A)
