Fallen Earth, Global Agenda, Earthrise. As players suffering from orc and elf burnout search for something different, the post-apocalyptic genre is quickly becoming popular.
One such title that's been flying well under the radar is Xsyon, an upcoming post-apocalyptic MMO from Notorious Games. The game is scheduled for an April 15 release, with plans to allow pre-order players to begin the game in mid-March. Xsyon's official site is very well done, offering backstory, screenshots, and extensive information about the game itself. The recently added forums rounded the site out nicely, opening the doors for discussion among players anxious for the game to arrive.
While the graphics aren't as perfected as bigger name games, the features are where this game really shines. Xsyon will be released in a series of installments, growing in every direction (landscapes, skills, crafts, etc.) as players learn and explore farther. So this means players will directly affect the world and the direction of the game by their actions and choices.
Xsyon is a game well worth looking into -- check out the official site for the full story.

I think Massively should flag this game as a possible scam alert. I just don't see how a game can pop up on the radar and be released in a few weeks without a beta test. I truly hope no one blows hard earned cash on this game, I have a feeling anyone who does will get burned. The ideas sound good in theory, but with no videos, no hands on, the website just popped up in the last couple days, and no chance to test or trial the game, hmm, you have to wonder.

This looks like a totally unrealistic feature list for an indie game to be honest, I simply cannot believe that even 1/10 of what they say will be in the game could make realease & doubtful it could be done within 10 years of release.
It looks like a wishlist for many MMO players, trouble is that a wishlist that long is untenable, if it were a billion dollar game with 300-500 people involved for 5 years already I might be less sceptical.

Yeah, the feature list looks like yet another grab-bag of pie-in-the-sky promises that may or may not make release. I'll wait and see on this one.

Well on the forums they have said there won't be an NDA for people who preorder and get into the beta, which apparently there is going to be still. So, if it's crap we'll hear about it.

I, too, thought the game might be a scam when somebody posted about it on mmorpg.com and I put some research into it. It definitely seemed fishy. That being said, a few days later a new website was up with more information about the developers and I'm no longer too concerned. It just looks like an extremely small, relatively inexperienced (MMO-wise) indie team putting it together.
All-in-all, I think the game (based on the features listed on the website) looks genuinely interesting. There are a few things that concern me, however:
1) The pre-orders - the game is allegedly in closed beta right now. Pre-orders get access to closed beta (paid beta, in other words). That bugs me, in general. Considering this game has been developed in near secrecy, it seems the only way for any members of the general public to get any access to beta is to pay for it. There's absolutely no footage or evidence to indicate the game will be ready by the launch date, which doesn't give me good enough confidence to even consider pre-ordering the game.
2) "Prelude" - this confuses me a bit. Is prelude the pre-launch phase or post launch? Comments I've seen posted from devs seem to indicate it's the pre-launch phase. Regardless, "prelude" is basically the period when the first batch of paying players will build the world (roads, cities, etc...) that will end up being enjoyed by newer paying players. It seems like there's a fine line between ultimate sandbox and charging players to "test and build the world for us".
3) The world - it's a valley. How big is it and, more importantly, how many players can it comfortably hold?

Regarding item 3 in your list: The Landscape part of the Features page states that the game will launch with 120 sq km and expand over time to more than ten times that.
The 120 sq km translates to about 46 square miles. That sounds pretty small at first, but then consider that Fallout 3 is 16 square miles which was room for a good number of communities with a lot of open landscape to explore. So Xsyon will launch with about three times the space of Fallout 3.
For another frame of reference, vanilla WoW is estimated at 50-60 square miles. (Based on how long it takes to run from point A to point B. See http://www.wowwiki.com/Talk:Azeroth_(world) for how they calculated this.) So Xsyon is looking to launch with not much less space than what WoW had at launch, and grow to considerably more than WoW has today.
The big difference here is that Xsyon seems to plan to make more realistic use of scale than WoW does, which is why I think the Fallout 3 comparison is the better one.
Now depending on how many shards there are and how long it takes them to lift the fog and expand the world, this could be perfect -- or it could become claustrophobic pretty quickly.

One of the devs has stated on the website that the game has been in development for 10 years (including initial planning and story creation).
For those who think this game is a scam, I don't blame you. It's unheard of for a company to spend that much time and money on development without telling every mmo website how great their game is going to be. However, after doing quite a bit of research on this game, I think it is legitimate.
By not spending tons of money on advertising, this indie company has been able to put all of that capitol into the game development. Check out the site, read the forums, and find out for yourself. This game has great potential. http://www.xsyon.com

Hmm...I believe it's called irony when a company named Notorious fails at creating notoriety for its game. Xsyon started playing peek-a-boo like a week ago, is supposed to launch in less than two months, and wants us to pre-order based on the merit of screenshots and a list of features that even Blizzard doesn't have the budget for.
I think there are three possible causes for this.
1. The game is a scam.
2. The devs have lots of ambition, with a side of misguided optimism.
3. The devs are REALLY good devs, and REALLY poor businesspeople.
I have to giggle a little bit. Since I personally think Xsyon is just a scam, I read Rubi's article a little differently. Where it looks like she is forced into political correctness for the sake of fostering a relationship between Massively and Notorious (should the game turn up legitimate), I inserted what I thought she might actually be thinking.
She resisted questioning the validity of the game, referring to Xsyon as "...flying well under the radar" instead of "being completely - and suspiciously - unheard of." When she says "Xyson's official site is very well done," she means "a lot of information does not make up for a very basic and unprofessional-looking site." And she suggests, "Xsyon is a game well worth looking into" where you know she's thinking, "do your research before trusting this one."
Not trying to get Rubi in trouble or anything, I just have to wonder if anyone actually isn't skeptical of this game. I'll wait for a free trial, or any positive feedback for that matter, before even thinking twice on this one.
