This week, DC Universe Online introduces new cast member...no, wait. It's not another one of those, this is a second round of answers to fan questions via a new Facebook video.
Game Director Chris Cao and Creative Director Jens Andersen answered lots of questions from people named Matt, and while the specifics covered a lot of ground, the general theme stayed in the general subject of battle. (No you can not punch a tidal wave, yes you can wield something besides your fists.)
The last video Q&A session came around this time in January, so hopefully we'll see more in March. The guys reminded fans again to keep the questions coming as it has the added benefit of guiding the development team in learning what players are hoping to get from DCUO. Take a look at the video here, and we'll watch for a third video Q&A in the future!

I love the DC Universe and I want this game to be so epic win, but every time the developers in the video mentioned a game mechanic, I instantly thought of Champions Online.
And I tried Champions Online, but I definitely didn't get the comic book vibe from that game.
I just don't want to see DCUO be CO using DCU characters. I think I would cry if that happened.

Well, you'll be happy to know that Geoff Johns, DC creator and super writer extraordinaire (recently named Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment) is a chief consultant for the game. So if you like the direction and stories that DC has been telling in the last ten years, I'm confident that the setting and narrative of DCU:O will be to your liking. Now of course I could be wrong, and publisher interference could limit Johns's influence - but I see no reason to think that will be the case here. Again, I could be wrong (SOE, and all).
I also find it, I don't know, unfair (for lack of a better word) to form an early opinion on DCU:O given what little has been released in press statements - and to further hypothesize that because it may borrow mechanics from other existing super hero MMOs it will end up being a clone. It may well be a derivative, we don't know. But seeing as it's a completely different developer with completely different designers, including creators that have proven themselves in the markets of the present and 90's (for what that's worth), I'm more inclined to expect something fresh and different.
Besides, I'd be cautious to expect that any developer would even entertain the notion of actually mimicking Cryptic. Using a product that has near universally been regarded as a failure as a reference, no less. WB has recently been taking a good, hard look at all of their properties and dedicated themselves to actually using them for what they're worth (reference the major changes at the film studio and DC, even naming Christopher Nolan of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight fame chief consultant duties on all of their super hero films).
I know, we all have high hopes, but history has taught us that we shouldn't expect much. Maybe I'm naive, time will tell.

DCUO and The Agency have been in development for a really long time. Hopefully that means good things, as I am really really sick of games that are launched far before they're ready.

Not really, truth be told. MMO's seem to be 4-6 years in development, as I recall.

@Sam: Unless it's an MMO by Cryptic. Then it's shipped after 18 months.

Don't worry, I'm certain SOE'll be sure to fill the game with nothing but it's own special brand of mediocrity.

DCOU is looking like a very promising title.
Looking forward for this game to come out
At least Bill Roper is not working for SOE.

I for one hold Micheal Zenke responsible for the successes and failures of DCUO. I suggest you all do the same ;)

There has been quite a lot of speculation that DCUO will use a modified version of the graphics engine SOE's Free Realms uses; in fact that many features of FR are a test for DCUO, such as the background updating (similar to Guild Wars) and so forth. If that is true, then I see that as very positive. Free Realms is a very smooth and responsive game, which is something that will be a must in an action oriented world with superhero battles. The artwork, animations and content in FR are top notch and I expect similar high quality from the people working on DCUO.
I played in the open beta for Champions Online and I figured out quite quickly the game was as shallow as a half full bird bath. While CO's initial graphics were not to my liking (the thick black lines around everything), with a few tweaks to the graphics settings I thought CO looked very nice. But it wasn't as smooth as other games, especially a problem with an "action" type combat system, which I didn't care for in the first place. Not terrible, but it just needed a bit more work, perhaps they have since improved that part of it.
I hope SOE will use some of the good things being done in FR and expand upon that. I didn't care for CO's combat at all, and with FR's recent change to "ultra easy mode" will have to hope that DCUO goes with a fun but more optioned combat system. I do expect a lot more content than CO, but then that wouldn't have to be much; and it does seem the creative department on DCUO should have a lot to show as they have been spending the proper amount of time working on this game, not just cranking out a few areas to get a half finished game out the door like some other companies do.
If they go with a similar pricing model to FR ($5 a month with a properly done cash shop) then I'll definitely be playing! If they opt to go with the $15 a month sub, it would have to be a really good game indeed, as "action MMO" tends to end up meaning "simple combat", which just wouldn't be something I'd want to be paying that amount for each month. Should be interesting to see what they come up with!

I hope equipment/weapons aren't so good that you have everyone using them on every toon. would ruin the theme of most characters
