Free trials are a growing trend in subscription MMOs. More and more, developers are realizing that if they expect players to spend a hefty sum to purchase a game as well as a monthly fee, they need to offer more than a website and a trailer video. Players want to know what they're getting into -- they're less inclined these days to drop $40-$50 (plus the cost of the second month's subscription, something most games require) on a game that they're not completely sure they're going to enjoy.
With that in mind, Darkfall has jumped on the trial bandwagon. It's not a free trial, but it's a trial nonetheless. For one dollar (or one euro, depending on which side of the ocean you're on), you can download and play Darkfall for one week. It's the second "new player friendly" move in a relatively short amount of time, and seems to indicate that the Darkfall developers are looking to reach out beyond their current community.
North American players interested in trying the game can access the trial here, while European players can access the trial at this site.
[Thanks to all the tipsters on this one!]

@Laughing
Watch Blizzard launch a dollar trial for their new MMO, and everyone hands over their card. It's a game people love to hate, and a lot of "THIS GAME SUCKS" get's lost in translation.
Not to mention the slew of shitty F2P games have spoiled the next generation of MMO players.
It's a dollar for 7 days. People didn't bitch this much when SOE would subscribe you for an entire month in MxO when you signed up for the trial.
Not to mention the moot point of "Oh they'll have my credit card information." You might as well not be playing MMOs, not purchase anything over the internet. Hell, might as well unplug your computer from the internet entirely with that mindset. It's a game company. It already has 20k+ subscribers. If they were going to fuck you over and take all your money, they would've done by now... 20,000+ times.
The $1 is to protect somewhat from goldfarmers that could destroy an economy in a player run economy game. There is nearly 30 gold farmers across 100 WoW servers (gross estimate). I don't think any indie game company wants 3000 trial players spamming in their game.
You and everyone else are the reason indie MMO companies get screwed over today. An in the end result, we get crap games like Allods or SWG:NGE which are simply World of Warcraft with a skin over it.
Keep screwing the MMO genre.

This is a great idea on their part. Ive played many mmorpgs and I havent played a real mmorpg since i left swg the day nge went live. I played wow for many years and aoc and even Aion, they are more action adventure online games than mmorpgs. I'm so happy i spent $50 to get Darkfall. Im back in a real mmorpg and it is fantastic. All those people bitching and whining on every mmorpg forum known to man are just crybaby's. I cant get myself to even read forums on mmorpg sites anymore. 3 weeks into Darkfall and im turning into a full blown Adventuring fanboi.
All of you who have been looking for a real mmorpg and have been for many years now should be downloading Darkfall ASAP.

DarkFall is amazing! Had the game a few months now nvr looked back to WoW(Where i came from). I played WoW progressed through a few bosses in ICC and i finally asked myself for what? Raid for months for a few pieces of gear? It was time to move on from the cookie cutter rotation of every class in the game.
This 1 dollar trial is an amazing offer.. If you don't want to pay a dollar for a trial then I would just recommend buying the 6 month Sub to save yourself the time because that's what you would do anyway! Thing I love about Darkfall is its community despite what some people say Pkers do not frequent starter towns.. I was Pked maybe twice in a starter area. No big deal they nvr take your gear maybe just some gold you had off the goblins :]. Darkfall you make a name for yourself overtime the entire server will learn your name and that reputation may be good or bad depending on your actions in the game.
Great deal here guys try it out and fall in love with Darkfall! Hope to see you all soon.

$1 is a trivial sum, but I don't feel like exposing my credit card information over a not-even-free trial. That went out of style years ago -- not unlike Darkfall and Darkfall-esque games themselves. The fee, however small, just makes them look cheap, which is even worse than looking desperate, and will keep away even more people who aren't really looking for yet another game trying to nickel-and-dime them.
Bad move on Darkfall's part.

Now that they have trial it might be fun to check this game out. I love gear and stats, thats why I play MMOs. As much as I hate the Lotro legendary item system, I would probably cry if an orc looted me when I died. I also prefer to play in small groups or poke around on my own, is this a game worth checking out with that kind of play style?

I see a lot of baseless whining here, & at least some of it is, I suspect, from kids that don't have a credit card in the first place and are disgruntled they can't go gank for free to satiate their cravings.
Firstly, as others have said, 1 dollar or 15 you are no safer handing your cc details to a macdonalds till device or via the internet to Aventurine.
Then, in a game as Darkfall is, the actions of every player can impact on the installed subscriber base, this fee discourages abuses that would directly & negatively impact that loyal playerbase.
If you are moaning because it's "not free" & for no other reason, then you probably don't have the intention or the means to pay for the game & it's subscription in the first place, this acts as another "filter".
By tagging a small charge you are only going to be lowering the barriers of entry to those players who are actually potential real subscribers with the means to pay for the game & a sub.
Personally I think that given the way the game is a full PvP full loot game that it would have been far stupider to have no charge at all, & would have had a bad effect on the game in many many ways.
I intend to try the game out for myself in a few weeks time via this method, I would not have been willing to try it otherwise (paying for the game upfront just to test it out) so as far as I am coincerned this was the responsible & right thing to do for DARKFALL, what other games do or do not do is totally irrelevant, Aventurine are doing what is right for their game.

the $1 fee is in case your a gold seller or a hacker they can ban your CC.
Its the best thing for darkfall.. a free trial in dfo would NOT work. has to be ways to blacklist people.

The $1.00 is to prevent hacks and spammers... log onto WoW or Aion or almost any other game that has free trials and tell me you don't see spam... DarkFall made the right move here. One dollar for a week is an amazing deal anyway.

I assumed Darkfall didn't have RMT because no one played Darkfall.

I fully support this sort of trial for 1$, I can see it preventing a lot of problems or atleast decreasing a lot of them.
Darkfall being a game you either love or hate, the people that were considering darkfall but weren't sure, mostly didn't because of 50$, i'm pretty sure that those that were serious about trying the game, won't mind spending 1$.
I understand the whole "oh noes...my visa info", but that's just how services over the internet work and it wont be the last time you need to give your visa info.
I hope to see a lot of new faces in darkfall and i've noticed ingame a lot of people are willing to show new players around. It is true that you won't experience the big fights in 7 days, unless some clans take along newbies on pvp raids. Somewhat like those reporters in a military squad ;)
But I do believe that 7 days is enough to convince someone whether it's something they'll want to play for the next x years.
I'm not really surprised by the hatred posts, the game is quite different in mechanics then most of the mmo's out there and change is hard to get used to. For a lot of us that have gotten used to darkfall, don't even care much about any other future mmo being released if it doesn't try to be drastically different from the mmo's out there. It works both ways.

I felt DarkFall was garbage and I actually don't consider it a fantastic game by the horrible interface and controls with its dated mechanics plaguing the game. I do like the skill based gameplay, but that flaws outweigh the good features by miles.
I wish a good developer could take those ideas and shape them into something much more effiencient.
